Ok, here are my personal thoughts on DOW and the first two expansions (can't comment on DOW 2 and Chaos Rising, damn computer isn't strong enough to cope with it. Probably too awesome for my computer...also, didn't buy Soulstorm, but considering getting it just for a laugh: having watched some of them via Youtube, I'll give my basic thoughts):

DOW: pretty good (I'm a little nostalgic about it: it was my first Real Time Strategy game.). Some of the story missions (Eldar!) were a pain in the ass, but great fun at the same time. Only comment was the campaign was too short for my liking (I normally play Third/First Person Shooters).

Winter Assault: very hard (I only got through the third order mission by luck). My list of easiest to hardest endings was Eldar, Imperial Guard, Chaos and Orks (and the disorder one was only completed because I wiped out the path to the portal with Chaos, then sent Gorguts near the portal, then saved and sent each commander through afterwards). Imperial Guard felt a bit too brittle for my liking, but, then again, I love playing Chaos.

Dark Crucade: easily my favourite game so far. My favourite character was (possibly unsurprisingly) Eliphas, with Thule a close second (at the time, I was (and still am) a major space marine (spess mahren) player). Map risk style gaming felt more interesting than the previous games. List of champaign strongholds from easiest to hardest for this troper: Space Marines (you could probably win by sending a squad of infiltraters in there and then use the orbital relay to win), Chaos (the blood pulse was annoying, though), Orks (target the banners), Necrons (I just hid my commander in a tunnel until I got the way clear to the drop zone (yes, I also destroy the beacons), then just ran him there, put him in a transport and drive to safety), Imperial Guard (I think I spent half of my time setting up a rediculous defence: thank goodness I didn't need to fight off a Baneblade from my base), Eldar (I know they are very manipulative, but, come on, three armies coming on one base? (still got a laugh when I beat the Chaos army in this as Eliphas: to my mind, it was a just finish.)) and Tau (do not get me started on how many troops I lost just taking down one of the two command posts on my first try: my usual tactic of charging fell quicker than I would care to admit..hell, I lost Eliphas AS A DAEMON PRINCE (TWICE!) just to take down both of them. I don't even know how I won as the Necrons...).

I've seen a bit about Soulstorm. I still don't get why Boreale's accent is mocked so ferociously: it was funny (in more ways than one), but I thought that he was trying to be a futuristic Napoleon more than anything else (for those wondering, I mean the one who surrendered at Waterloo.). I agree that the Chaos commander (Carrion? I don't know...) had a slightly daft voice as well, but not to the level I expected (the METAL BAWKES was true enough, though). Otherwise, not as bad as I was led to believe. A better script writer and a few extra months would have probably given a good expansion.

DOW 2...DOW 2 looks fantastic. Since I didn't particularly like the base building in the first game, this looks like a welcome change. The veterans who are your sergeants look cool and the wargear makes the game feel truely like 40K. The only drawback I noticed is that it isn't as easy to understand if you haven't played the previous games before. Still, looking good for the future of the DOW games.

Chaos Rising looks just as good, if not better, than Dark Crusade. I could list all I've seen that is good, but I think I've talked too much already. However, to say I was pleased to hear Eliphas was back would be probably the biggest understatement in the 40k galaxy.

Personally, I think a good addition in the next expansion (if Relic make one) would be a chaplain (rescue him from the Judgement of Carrion as he is unaware of the Tyranids infesting it and, mistaking it for a Blood Ravens ship, goes in to parley with the leader of the fleet (that would be my suggestion for the mission that unites him to your cause). The idea is he is not immune to corruption, having been deceived by Kyras into attacking you (the very reason you go to save him as well: to prove your innocence.)) and being able to fight either Necrons (a dead moon coming to life would be cool: plus, you could do what you did on Kronus and Kaurava to finish the campaign), Tau (followed Angelos to make him pay for what he did in the war against them: this would also be a chance to flesh Angelos out a bit more than simply a badass who commands what remains of the loyalists of the Blood Angels and is captain of the third company), Imperial Guard/ Inquisition (sent by Kyras to slay the loyalists for heresy) or Dark Eldar (infiltrated an Eldar webway gate to try and take one of the planets from the Blood Ravens). But it isn't up to me what Relic puts in a game: these are just what I would like to see in the next one. Considering sending this list off to them as a possible idea, though...

Just started the Spess Mehreens stronghold mission. Boreale is just as cheesy in French, but usually for different reasons, one of which is poor translation at times.

Edit: Carron however, is (very) slightly less stupid with the Metal Bawkses.

Edit2: Oh sweet Emperor, the Necron Lord! Rather than speaking with a "haunting" voice like Macabee, he uses a combination of "haunting" and "asthmatic old man"!

Finally finished the Chaos campaign in Soulstorm

  • Didn't like:
    • A bunch of things fans don't like or "like" ironically (Metal boxes, Spess Mehreens, 100 Baneblades)
    • The Necron Lord.
  • Liked:
    • Gorgutz 'Ead 'Unter nonplussed about the Ork stronghold.
    • The Pimpmobile.
    • The replacement of the base-saving mechanic with the reinforce/forward base hybrid: It makes the game much faster as I no longer lose an hour capturing the whole map. Now, if the enemy only has one base and you have a decently-sized honor guard, it's over under five minutes.
    • Edit: General Vance Motherfucking Stubbs' speech (minus the Baneblade part).

^^And Macabee's voice is a ghostly voice done right.

Ah, another thing I liked in Soulstorm: Kicking the ass of Asdrubael Vect in person. Of course he escaped, but destroying the Dark Eldar Supreme Leader's ride felt better than simply disgracing an Archon...

I was wondering : was the Confessor unit originally supposed to be an Inquisitor? In the fluff, Confessors are just high-ranking preachers, which would mean that he should just be saying things similar to the Imperial Guard Ministorum Priest (e.g. LET ME PREACH HIS NAME! Instead though, his lines seem to have a judgemental theme that would suggest an Inquisitor ("I have come to pass judgement.", "A plea of innocence is guilty of wasting my time."  *

).

[up]Mine's installed, but thanks to some brilliant business move, combined with my bad luck of forgetting my only working account's email and password, my third account that I made just to play this game has gotten stuck in an endless loop of data corruption because it keeps asking me to install an update for Windows LIVE.

[up]Nope. If I refused, it wouldn't load my profile onto it, preventing me from playing even the Campaign mode. If I did do it, my profile suffered data corruption and had to be deleted in order to try again, running into another update that cut off the profile's loading (we've entered an endless recursion of time!)

I managed to find a way around that problem by downloading the update outside of the game thanks to a file that was stealth-installed onto my PC when I was starting up the game for the first time. When I did that, I was able to load my profile onto the game perfectly, so I was able to play Dawn of War II after some frustration. For my formal thoughts on the game, barring the clunky Games for Windows Live system that they use, are as follows:

Due to the smaller squad sizes and the lack of base building, matches tend to go by a lot faster, battles in particular. Due to the lack of base building, this also means that issues such as Dark Crusade's Eldar conundrum (multiple, invisible, fuckhueg bases that are constantly pouring out new troops to Zerg Rush you to death. When Eldar play like the Zerg, something clearly went wrong) have vanished as well.

The boost in damage that explosives got gives me a reason to actually use the damn things (I never used grenades in Dawn of War 1, simply because they didn't do anything worthwhile), especially against targets in buildings (do I blow the building to smithereens with a Detpack, or just get the dudes out of the building with a grenade?). Boss fights seem a bit silly right now (especially the fact that an early boss is a Warlock. Eldar don't have dedicated tanking units, and Warlocks are just Sergeants with some psychic powers), but I'm barely into the campaign mode.

I haven't played the other races yet (just Marines), so I can't comment on them.

Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.

Do W 2 bosses always kick my ass. I read here that Cyrus could become a Game-Breaker against them when sufficiently leveled up, so I think I'll take it back in the group to avoid 1-star scores at the end of a mission...

Cyrus can indeed be a Game-Breaker when leveled up enough to get the perk that lets him use accessories while infiltrated. Combine that with Remote Detonation charges, his usual satchel charges, and a sniper rifle with the specialized ammo perk for high-powered shot and Cyrus can pretty much solo a mission.

Cyrus is awesome and all but due to his best traits (the aforementioned Remote Bombs, Det Packs, and Sniper Shots) being limited to supplies I don't really see how he can solo entire maps.

I was actually considering Dark Crusade, but I wonder. Are the battles in Dark Crusade and (forgive me for asking) Soulstorm bigger in scale, or are you just limited to a set number of units that you can train? A populimit?

You are limited in units just like the original Dawn Of War and Winter Assault, which means twenty points in infantry and twenty points in heavy support (with various squads/vehicles having different counts).

Also, elite squads and big vehicles have their own Arbitrary Headcount Limit, but commanders use 0pt.

On top of my head, for the imperial guard vehicles:

  • Chimera transport, 1pt
  • Sentinel, Hellhound: 3pt
  • Basilisk: 3pt, limit 3
  • Leman Russ: 5pt, limit 2
  • Baneblade: 3pt (yes, only 3), limit 1
Note that the campaign mode contains upgrades for having up to 24 infantry points and 22 vehicle points, which allows the combo of 1 Baneblade, 2 Leman Russ and 3 Basilisks.

Anyway, in all cases it's much bigger in scale than what you have in Dawn Of War 2: Average squad cost is 2 or 3 and they are bigger (Space Marines have squads of up to 9, sergeant included).

I just finished the Imperial Guard campain of Soulstorm, the last of the three I planned to do.

Basilisks are awesome. I breezed through the Necron stronghold mission by simply Earthshaking their monoliths from outside the four bases, and the Eldar stronghold fared little better. Neither did the Ork stronghold, actually. The Tau stronghold was a little harder because of the time limits and all, but I eventually bombed them from outside anyway. Asdrubael Vect was paralyzed and bombed, he fell when I finally managed to do it twice. The sisters likewise fell eventually.

Only the Chaos stronghold held up a bit because the chaos mist was regenerating the building, so I had to bomb the temples first rather than Sequence Break;

There's something immensely satisfying in just levelling the enemy with artillery, and forcing them to counterattack against well-entrenched forces.

Slow, but darn effective.

Started playing Soulstorm a couple of days ago (First in the series played, as suggest by my brother whose game it is), and have conquered the whole of the Ork's starting planet (minus the Tau moon and their gate, which they have annoying decided to heavily fortify) and have just entered in on the Eldar/Necron planet.

Something I found interesting: The Tau pretty much have beelined their way to the Dark Eldar moon, although they have yet to even weaken the moon itself, despite their best efforts.

Also, what exactly is the Ork ability in the campaign? No matter how much I read it, it is never clear to me exactly what it does.
