I will say P5 Guy seems less of a wish fulfillment than P3 and especially P4 Guy do, though; he has more hints of a distinct personality and he can't become the God-King of the School like the other two can no matter what he does.

That is true, but I think the criminal record plays a big role in that.

I think Joker is absolutely as much of a wish-fulfillment character as the other two. I'd even argue he's moreso.

He doesn't really become God-King of the school but he's still a flashy chick magnet whose antics become famous all around Japan, is always one step ahead of the antagonists, and shoots god in the face with a giant gun.

I felt Joker was wish fulfillment in a positive manner, in that he goes out and does amazing things and becomes a modern legend, rather than just having a bunch of girls fall in love with him for being protag-kun.

And of course Joker ends up all Wish-Fufillmenty. He’s the silent protag in a JRPG with Dating Sim elements.

Its nowhere near as bad as i thought it was or could have been, but it reeks of tone deafness. I think when more concrete news comes in we'll have to see because ive seen somw bizzare accusations.

I will say that the post of the alternative take that was link was since edited by the OP, as it was inaccurate (it probably can’t be in the past if the character who’s ten years younger than them is with them and looks exactly the same as he does in the story as a whole).

I can't wait to see an ATLUS game that doesn't have unintentionally controversial gender elements in them.

I forget... did Nocturne ever have controversial gender elements in that game?

None of the mainline SMT games have ever had problems with Gender in their characters.

Only the games that Katsura Hoshino has been involved in have them, IIRC.

Soul Hackers had Beta making one or two leery comments towards the Hero from what I remember, oh and Madam Ginko being a transvestite in the Japanese version but apparently not in the English one (though that's on the dubbers rather than the home branch). That's pretty much it from all the games that I've played myself (notably none of the Hashino titles). Devil Survivor 2 and Apocalypse had some eye-rolling stuff here and there, but nothing tied to any actual meaningful issues.

I didn't think any of DeSu2 or Apoc's weaker scenes were had gender issues, unless you count Toki's horniness due to the literal sex goddess in her head.

Exactly. They were dumb, tropey stuff at worst. Persona 5 had me raising my eyebrow rather than just rolling my eyes at some of the stuff that popped up here and there. Like Ryuji coming off as a mini-incel on Valentines Day if you took the unconscionably decision to not date anyone. Hashino obviously does not write every single line of the games, but with the context of that notorious "doesn't understand how to form a friendship with a girl" quote that was a "Yikes!" to me.

Persona 5 has those moments, like the lack of a gay dating route, Ryuji being prayed on by two very flamboyant men twice, and Ann supposedly preventing herself to be objectified despite her character design doing the exact opposite.

Ann's thing is not that she doesn't like being objectified though? She's a model and likes getting attention. Her issue in the first part is that for some reason she doesn't like creepy old men who blackmail her and rape her friends. Being considered desirable is not a problem in and of itself.

Anyway, I don't mind the lack of a gay romance so much by itself, but Ryuji being followed around by sexual predators is pretty bad. I haaaaate that gay stereotype.

In any case I'll be... interested in seeing where this takes Hashino's reputation and that of his games. I'll be watching from the gallery!

I don't really think it'll impact sales of Hashino led games very significantly, if at all. However as time goes on some of that feedback may eventually makes it way towards him, assuming that it hasn't already and he's just ignored it.
