im surprised it took this long for gintama to get a thread here. it really is a great series.
i only wish sentai would at least try a dub for this one, but oh well.as long a it is licensed, im happy.
spealingof, i hear its pretty tough for scanalators to translate this series, thus the manga for us is behind. is that true?
ONE PIECE SEASON 4 IS HERE!! Support the straw hats and funimation: http://tinyurl.com/cffxygrNot sure about the manga. I haven't really dipped into it except for the iron town arc. But I enjoy watching the subbed anime. I'm trying to start a buzz on this forum, but haven't had much success. A teaser for the current episode: Feces throwing monkey.

Holy shit, why haven't I been watching this before?
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. It is truly an underrated series. Probably because the humor is too random and sometimes too obscure. Its a similar style of comedy to Family Guy except not as formulaic.
Just downloaded volume 1~36. Hell yeah.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Necro.
So far I read up to volume 18.
Holy crap, the Game Chapters were the funniest chapters I've ever seen! I mean, the Puke Tetris, Hijitaka getting killed after hitting a chair, and the Emperor and the Dark King used as weapons, I seriously love this series.
Does life ever get better for Hasegawa, btw?

That'd be like Shinpachi getting contact lenses. There are some things you just don't mess with.
I find it to be a massive Unfortunate Implication or Family-Unfriendly Aesop that his massive misfortune was brought to him by him trying to do what is right. Even in a comedy series like this, it's something that I find hard to swallow.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Could be worse. Madao could lose his shades.
Reading vol. 19.
Holy fuck, SHIT GOT REAL!
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. For a Gag Manga, shit gets serious quite often.
Finished volume 24.
Did this gag manga just made me cry? ;_;
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. The serious arcs can do that, yes.
Just read volume 35, the last volume I have downloaded.
This whole volume is made of Let's Get Dangerous!.

Anyone read the latest chapter? Because ho-ly shit. That's some deep shit they are in if I've ever seen deep shit.
mario is red, i am green, i try my best, but everyone's meanI've stopped reading the manga because I found that it ruined some of the jokes when I watch the anime.
Any idea how far behind the anime is?
IDK, but IMO the manga is inferior to the anime because the VA's in the anime give the humor so much punch. The V As in Gintama were some of the best the industry could offer if you look into the character sheet. All of Gintama's V As have a pretty impressive CV.
BTW I love the contrast on how Madao's VA is owning shit in other universe (as Gendo, Akainu and Kenpachi). I guess all the karma went to Madao

Well, Tomokazu Sugita can pretty much carry any series by his lonesome so things can only get better when other big names join in.
I guess the major thing that Gintama has going for it is its willingness to do just about everything. Most series do only Cerberus-y stuff or outlandish sketch comedy but Gintama does both. It also shows that you don't need to care about continuity if you don't feel like it on any given day.

The characters in Gintama have really grown on me. In fact I think they are the primary strength of the show.
My main complaint would be that Gintama overdoes the the Tsukkomi to a degree that it's not even funny. When Gintoki is explaining Boke and Tsukkomi Routine (a pretty good explanation of it too) he does mention that the Tsukkomi reaction goes on for too long and it's being overdone, but this is like the only time it's ever lampshaded.
If there's new episodes going to air though, I'll have to catch up. I'm only at 164 at the moment.
There is like over 250 episodes in general. The ending of previous season implied they will air new season when there'll be enough manga material to avoid fillers.
My President is Funny Valentine.http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-08-26/new-gintama-anime-episodes-to-return-on-tv
The anime is set to return on October (together with a couple of reruns).
The brilliant thing about Gintama is that it is a series with No Fourth Wall. They openly admit to saving up their budget with static low cost gag scenes (or even stop action mannequins lol) instead of insulting the intelligence of their audience with low quality fillers. And during a real fight scene, they totally DELIVERS - the frame rate is really amazing compared to other long running shonen. They weren't lying when they said in the omake that they blew most of the Gintama' budget on the four devas arc.
Throw into that some random poop jokes, pop culture parodies and the best cast of Voice Actors the industry could offer and you'll have one of the most underrated anime of all time
I personally explain No Fourth Wall weirdness with theory that Gintama was created partially from leaks from other SJ titles and is the point when all SJ verses ultimately converge.
My President is Funny Valentine.Simply put, Gintama is Shonen Jump: The Anime. It embodies and glories in everything that the magazine is about rather than a specific series, theme or genre. I don't think its brand of comedy could be done by any series whose pedigree is a single work.
I would argue that Gintama's audacity to use poop jokes and adult sex jokes (especially regarding prostitution) that is uncharacteristic of other Jump series.
That's the thing - while still on SJ Gintama know its audience and pander to them instead. Most of the references especially the one regarding japanese late night tv comedians and old actors will fly past your typical shonen audience. Moreover of all the poop and sex jokes, Gintama has way more respect toward its women characters (no shameless fanservice, well rounded STRONG - not Faux Action Girl strong female characters) and thus are incredibly popular with female audience. There's a reason why 3 characters from Gintama are in the top 5 of Anime's most desirable husband.

I'm not sure if anyone saw the latest episode where they're in the bath house with the scary looking aliens. That episode had me rolling.
