I can understand why Beatles fans revile Revolution 9 so much, but to me its a very interesting piece of musique concrete and quite often, the guys who criticise it will be the same guys who dismiss noise as "not-music".

People who hate Revolution 9 don't realize that it acts as the climax to The White Album.

The whole album is a chaotic mish-mash of various styles, to the point where one can say it's several solo albums combined into one. And it all comes to a head with Revolution 9.

You can get what you want and still not be very happy.

Seeing the title I was first prompted to say. "Do you want to talk about it?" That song is pretty deranged.

In the process of creating Old Shame.

Listen to Frank Zappa's Lumpy Gravy and then get back to me.

I didn't think I was dumb enough to enjoy this, but I was.

I'm listening to it now.

This is... I don't even know. I will never look at The Beatles the same way again.

And may I ask why it took so long?

In the meantime, Good Morning Good Morning is easily my least favorite.

(*Gives it a whirl*)

...The Beatles were the first band I ever really liked / listened to. Abbey Road was the first album I ever purchased (I was eight).

...I think they've officially rejoined my top 5 fave bands.

The 5 geek social fallacies. Know them well.

Does anyone know what John was listening to/directly influenced Number Nine, beyond Yoko and that Electronic comp?

Avant Garde (particularly the tape music variety) most likely.

Try Steve Reich's Early Works. Not so much "Piano Phase" and "Clapping Music" but the other songs are sort of a watered down Rev. 9 (just that, without most of the weird noises and repeating only one phrase over and over again with subtle alterations over time. For 13 minutes in the case of "Come Out")

Awesome! I've never heard of this one. Is it rather obscure or something that I should be embarrassed about for not knowing?

Guys, the worst Beatles song is obviously Wild Honey Pie.

Free: Obscure as far as I know. But I'd be unsurprised if it inspired Lennon.

I always think of Act Naturally as the worst Beatles song.

[up]Just out of curiosity, what was your impression of them before?

Act Naturally wasn't by The Beatles, it was by John Russell and Voni Morrison.

Also, I find that Revolution 9 is better if you think of the Mood Whiplash on the White Album - it's followed by probably the sappiest song they ever wrote ("Good Night").
