So, my fortress is in a nice place. Lots of wood, lots of sand, lots of water, there's magma... somewhere, and the entrance proper is located in an easily-defendable hill.

But there's no booze (because the barrels magically disappear whenever one gets made) and no seeds (...no idea why). That's not a good thing, I assume.

If you don't like the ASCII, download a tileset.

I usually design my fortress for a long time, carefully planning where to put the entrance, how to defend it and so on and so fort, and then end up losing or getting bored within the first few years, abandon it and start designing a new one. As a result I've spent more time drawing fortresses on paper than playing the game and actually building them.

Crap.

Miner drowned.

That's a bad thing. But on the bright side, one of my dogs had puppies!

Well, I just finished trading (was scared - thought the merchants robbed me blind for a sec) and I got immigrants.

...well, this is going to be interesting....

I read an thread in the /tg/ archive about a dwarf visiting the remains of Boatmurdered. It is crafted of horror and elephants, and menaces with spikes of magma and elephant bone. On it is engraved an image of a dwarf. The dwarf is on fire. On it is engraved the image of a young dwarf girl. The dwarf is laughing. The young dwarf girl is laughing.

Ahhhh, yes, that. The entirety of Boatmurdered is stretched on a rack between Crosses the Line Twice and Nightmare Fuel Unleaded.

Well, now I'm going to try to build a well.

Can you build a well over stairs, or does it have to be over open space?

Crap. Maybe I should have built a resivoir or something, because my well room is flooded.

Well, I think my fort might be a bit too full at the moment.

I have no idea what to do with all these dwarfs.

Depending on how far you're in, you could do any number of things with them. Mass enlisting for the army! Mass smoothing of all stone surfaces! Endless hauling of stone to a one-square area designated as a stone dump! And of course, there's always a Megaproject of your very own to build.

EDIT: This is a good page for people who are just starting out, but don't want to have everything told to them.

I kinnda wanna organize a succession game with you T Vtrouper types because I believe there is a sliver a chance it would be magnificent.

Although succession games are big responsibilities and I myself am unsure how to acquire the hosting space to post the details.

If anyone wants to help me with it, I will gladly take the burden of organizing and making sure the bloodline continues

The future of the past is right now!

I tried that over in Live Bloginations a while ago, but didn't get any responses. I'd still be up for it if there's interest now.

I have a problem with the + and - buttons. I just got the latest version.

You need to use the + and - buttons on your number pad. If you don't have a number pad, you can just remap them.

Remap them, then. You can do that from the menu you get by pressing Escape.

Also, I started a succession game thread here.

@Kinkajou: I had a problem with that at first, too. There should be some that only work with the Function key; I started using those, and now I'm frantically trying to set up drowning within the first six months before the Dig Deeper mod's orcs turn up to ritually sodomize my dwarves, and praying to Armok that the giant cave spider romping around the place dismembering hoary marmots doesn't notice any of my dwarves.

New version is out, might be an April fools thing but it doesn't seem that way as it includes the new test arena mode. The forum is down but the main site seems ok.

Nope. It's genuine. Toady One actually released the years-awaited next version on April Fools day. The site quickly went down under the traffic, but the DF Wiki, at http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page lists some mirrors.

And I must say it is worth the wait. The new caverns are awesome. I dig down eight levels and find this huge underground lake with cave plants growing on the shores. And the game no longer pauses every time your miners find some minerals. And you can trade for sand. And bodies are now modeled with even more intricate details, including hair style and eye color. No, really. We have a rich variety of eye colors, in an ASCII game.

HOLY SHIT.

MORUL IS AWESOME.

I wasn't sure whether I liked this game or not but this is proof I need to play far more.

It is fortuitous that the new version has been released.
