This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~oracleroller23:Here's the thing. When we say "clearly posted mod instruction", we mean clearly posted. So either you failed to notice that, or you simply think it doesn't apply to you. Either way, that's a problem, and it's not really something that "I promise to do better next time" is going to cut it with.

~jtolbert8831: With grammar like that you're not going anywhere, even if you can explain your deletions on Quotes.Weak But Skilled and Vanilla Protagonist, or your problems with Example Indentation.

"Yup. That tasted purple."

I received a suspension for being obnoxious and off-topic about 4 years ago, back when I was younger and much more immature. I haven't appealed because I haven't used the forums since then. Could my suspension be removed now? Thanks in advance

~DragonKing56, before we reinstate, please confirm how you will handle the following situation. You should not be Edit Warring:

  • You make an edit to a page.
  • Another troper removes that edit.

I have just found that I have had my editing privileges suspended; if this is about my recent attempts to edit the 'Fan Works- Wrong Genre Savvy' page, I apologise if my efforts came across the wrong way. I like to feel that in most cases my edits are purely constructive and valid additions to this site, but if I have made any errors or 'insults' that I am unaware of, please let me know what I did to merit this suspension, and be assured that I will work to moderate my edits with greater care in future.

~Dragonking56, I did not offer you any terms. I am asking you to explain how, instead of edit-warring, you will be handling a dispute in the future. You have to respond to that satisfactorily before your suspension will be released.

~Book Cat: Per the history on Creator.Rooster Teeth, you're running a text replacement program that is changing "Trump" to "Drumpf". We don't care if you use them in general, but they're not permitted when editing the wiki.

Re-reading 'When Worlds Collide' (the fic I've been trying to cite as an example of Wrong Genre Savvy), I feel I have a better understanding of why it doesn't actually fit that criteria now, and assure all concerned parties that I won't try and repeat that error again. If my current suspension is because of something else, let me know what it is and I will be willing to learn from my error.

OK, working backwards. Thanks again for everyone's patience.

~Gentilernandez, that's not what we would like. We cannot suspend you from certain areas of the wiki; either you demonstrate you can avoid the issue in the future, or your editing privileges are not restored.

Also, you've never even asked what the issue is. Given that your post seems to indicate you think you know what the issue is - please tell me why you think you are suspended.

~MarcusSLazarus, unfortunately, there are a few things going on, some of which you've already been suspended for. Let's go through it:

  • You were edit-warring on WrongGenreSavvy.FanWorks. I'm glad that you've checked on the trope definition now, but that is something you should have done as soon as your edit was contested. Edit wars must, must be resolved somewhere besides the page itself. I see that you did respond to some PM's, but doing that while restoring the edit on the page is still edit-warring.
  • You also have indentation issues. See Example Indentation, and let me know if you have an idea of what you've been doing wrong.

~Dragonking56, that's one of the options. In order to have a wider conversation, you could also take the example to the discussion of the page itself, or Ask the Tropers. In either case, it's good to notify the other tropers involved in the disagreement so everyone can participate constructively. Are we clear on how to resolve these matters moving forward?

~434411423124222344, yeah, that was definitely obnoxious of you. I'm willing to give you a shot, since it's been quite a while and you're being upfront about how out-of-order this behavior is. Let's just note well that reverting to this kind of talk will get you quickly resuspended. Clear?

~BlindBandit8, we cannot restrict wiki privileges to certain pages of the wiki. We also do not want you to self-flagellate here, just be a constructive editor like we want the whole community to be.

Let's try to start this again. Everyone has biases on works they follow, but that doesn't mean you can't contribute. You need to self-regulate by carefully reading trope pages and using community sources like Ask the Tropers and Is this an example? when editing something in your fandom blindspot. Thoughts?

~BigCheng, you're not making a strong argument, to be honest. If you're only reason you were posting in the forum was to troll, then there's not much of a reason to restore it.

~weedle013, forgive us here, but your argument is also not super convincing. Let's do a quick trial, and then we'll go from there. How do you correct this indentation for three examples from the same work?

  • Trope: [Example 1], [Example 2], [Example 3].

MarcusSLazarus Since: Mar, 2013
#20567: Feb 25th 2020 at 4:49:49 PM

I'll accept that mistakes were made with Wrong Genre Savvy, but I'm genuinely not sure when I have ever gone against the recommended indentation rules. That said, I will watch out for that issue in future to ensure it doesn't come up.

nombretomado (Season 1) Relationship Status: [TOP SECRET]
#20568: Feb 25th 2020 at 5:48:46 PM

~MarcusSLazarus, that's a bit concerning. You were previously suspended for indentation, and it appears we took you at your word that you recognized the issue. Let's be a little more detailed this time around and see how the conversation goes.

Example Indentation clearly states that this is how you handle a single example in a work:

  • Trope Name: [Example]

It goes on the same line as the trope name. (Or, if this is an example listed on a trope page, it goes on the same line as the work name.)

If there are multiple examples in a work, then the trope (or work) is listed on the first bullet, and then each example gets its own separate second-level bullet - for example:

  • Trope Name:
    • Example 1
    • Example 2
    • Example 3

Here are some of your write-ups that have not adhered to these rules:

  • Starfish Aliens: In the series 2 episode "Deep Search", Gordon and Alan Tracy travel to the moon of Europa to rescue a pair of astronaut vloggers who were trying to discover life there who got trapped in the underground oceans. After the Tracys rescue the duo, they encounter a large green bioluminescent creature akin to a featureless manta-ray. It's also a colonial lifeform, as it's revealed to made up of millions of tiny organisms when scanned.
    • Then in the series 3 episode "Life Signs", Alan and Virgil travel to Mars to rescue Captain Lee Taylor and a scientist obsessed with finding life on Mars after the caverns they're in collapse around them. In the episode's epilogue, it's reveled that the probes the scientist sent into a crevasse have discovered an underground lake, in swimming in it are several tiny bioluminescent tadpole-like creatures that swim in shoals.

  • A non-fatal version of this becomes a recurring gag in some of the Asterix books involving the pirates that Asterix and Obelix often encounter in their travels; certain stories feature the pirates, upon realising that the aforementioned Gauls are on the ship they're about to attack, decide to scuttle their own ship themselves, reasoning that destroying it themselves spares them a few knocks and amounts to the same thing in the end.
    • This becomes particularly amusing in tales such as Asterix at the Olympic Games and Asterix and the Magic Carpet, when the pirates scuttle ship when the Gauls weren't going to attack them (in the first case, attacking the pirates would have increased the costs of their current hired boat, and in the second the Gauls were just looking for food).

Does this help clarify the issue?

In my defence, for the 'Starfish Aliens' example I was just moving it down the page to its proper place in alphabetical order rather than writing that particular entry myself. That said, looking at the cited example from 'Asterix', I think I can see how you would have preferred me to lay it out and apologise for my error.

Let's be clear, OK? It's not a matter of preference, it's a matter of the rules. I do see in your PM's that you were holding tightly to a completely different, incorrect idea of how indentation works. This is also your third suspension, and typically that's the end of the line - especially if it's the same issue recurring, as it is in your case.

However - let's see how it goes. Fix these two cases of wrong indentation:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Neil, the Terra Save leader, after the Uroboros infection in Episode 3. Poor Claire.
    • Alex Wesker in the last battle. And throughout the later half of Barry's campaign.
    • Raid Mode's special challenges has some GIANT monsters.

  • Proud Warrior Race: Every aspect of the Swarm society is focused on conquering other planets and taking their resources.
    • Lilo deconstructs this when she hears about it, pointing out that since the Swarm is so focused on conquering worlds rather than actually using them for agriculture and the like, they'll need to conquer more and more worlds as they expand further and they need more resources, and they'll eventually reach a point where they can't conquer new worlds fast enough.
