Given that TP Link is canonically a descendant of Oo T Link, he was never a random Joe

Huh? Where is that ever said or implied?

The Hero's Shade explicitly called Link his descendant and it was confirmed in Hyrule Historia (and was a popular theory before then) that the Hero's Shade was the Hero of Time.

How distant an ancestor though. His father, his grandfather, his great grandfather or much later

TP takes place roughly 100 years after OOT on the Child Timeline, so I'd guess his great or great-great grandchild.

Which begs the question, who was OOT Link's wifey? And the answer is rather likely Malon. Zelda and Malon were the only gals that were still around for Link to fall in love with, and had Link married Zelda, his descendent would still be some form of royal (probably a count in the most distant scenario, thank you years of Crusader Kings II), but he's not; he's a common rancher living south of Hyrule.

Now, there's the possibility of some OOT-esque shenanigans where he was sent there as a baby for his own protection, or his family went there and died offscreen, but who knows. I just really like the MaLink pairing and am thrilled that it's now a very legit possibility.

EDIT: Oh good, got ninjaed, so it isn't a double post. Anyway, on the topic of TP, I honestly would love to see a return to TP's formula as the next major release post-BOTW.

Reconstruct the OOT formula, since SS tried to play with it, and BOTW forwent it entirely. Make the sidequests have a very tangible effect on the game's world (Castle Town's shop becoming affordable, pathways opening up, the citizenry getting more and more active the more you do stuff, basically show that your efforts are doing something). Go back to the Magnificent Bastard version of Ganondorf. Have him hijack the plot again. Throw Tingle in there if you have to. Despite how formulaic Twilight Princess was, it's still one of my Top 5 Zelda games, and I'd love to see another game in its style.

[up][up] If he married Ruto, his descendant would also be royalty. Assuming such a pairing could even produce a child at all.

I mean one of the Sages in A Link Between Worlds should be descended from Zelda and thus royalty and yet none of them are. [lol]

Also we don't know, Link's Grandma may have had gills or something.

ALBW was, like, 500 or 600 years after OOT, if not even more. By that point, the most distant of relations would be commonfolk.

I just want to know how the Goron ended up with a human descendant in that time, and the Zora ended up with a human great/great-great-grandchild only 100 years later.

A little after Midnight this morning I completed my second playthrough of Skyward Sword. It’s the 4th time I beat a Zelda game with a character named “Obama” and it’s approriate in this case as “Skyward Sword”, in my opinion, is by far the greatest video game released from January 20, 2009 to January 19, 2017. If you want a more unbiased opinion, Time magazine named “Skyward Sword” the 3rd greatest video game of 2011 (I believe Skyrim was #2 and #1 was Minecraft).

Of course you can’t talk about “Skyward Sword” without discussing the Wii Motion Plus controls. The motion controls certainly caused some frustrations but all in all I’m glad they were put in the game. The biggest problem I had with motion controls was doing forward stabs. Quite often when I tried to do forwards stabs, the game would just register them as horizontal or diagonal slices. There were certainly times when the game’s motion controls trigged the auto-jumping system at the worst times and sent “Obama” falling to his doom (this was also a problem I had with motion controls in “Twilight Princess”). One example of motion controls working well is the Beetle weapon. Whenever I had to use the Beetle, the motion controls pretty much always worked and made the weapon very fun to use.

I saw an ad for “Skyward Sword” that showed a man, who grew up with original Zelda, playing “Skyward Sword” with his young son. The ad hailed “Skyward Sword” as the beginning of a new generation. This is a tad ironic as “Skyward Sword” now rather feels like the END of a generation as it was the franchise’s last console game before “Breath Of The Wild” took the franchise in a bold new direction. Even though “Breath Of The Wild” was all about breaking convention, it still took a few pages from “Skyward Sword” like the stamina wheel, item durability, Zelda being the incarnation of the Goddess Hylia, etc.

Legendary video game composer Koji Kondo composed the main theme “Ballad Of The Goddess” for “Skyward Sword” but otherwise passed the baton to a new generation of video game composers. I beleive “Skyward Sword” was the first Zelda game to be completely performed by a symphony orchestra (Twilight Princess was some symphony recorded music mixed with computer music traditionally used for video games). One cool thing they did is to transform Groose’s theme. When Groose first appears as a pompous jerk, his theme starts off using brass instruments that sound as though they are mocking Groose. Groose’s theme becomes more majestic after he proves he’s actually a decent guy. Another interesting music choice is the decision to make the clarinet the main instrument for “Zelda’s Lullaby”. It makes “Zelda’s Lullaby” more mornful and melancoly than previous renditions of the tune. It’s appropriate for the game’s concept of the Goddess Hylia regreting having to manipulate Link to do what is necessary to save Hyrule.

While I do think “Skyward Sword” was the best Wii game, there’s at least one area where “Skyward Sword” falls short of “Twilight Princess”: the companion character. Fi has her good qualities but she is no Midna. Fi’s biggest flaw is that she plays the Captain Obvious role way too often. Quite a few of her statements left me saying “no sh—, Sherlock”. For example, you don’t need the Triforce Of Wisdom to know a door covered in barbed wire may be hiding an important item nor do you need a genius IQ to know that arrows can attack bad guys from far away. Her constant use of statistics can be annoying as if she’s a female C 3 PO. If Fi underwhelmed me, Lord Ghirahim sure as heck didn’t. The worst I can say about Ghirahim is that he’s so unforgettable and cool that he makes his master, Demise seem rather bland. You gotta love that “oh no you didn’t” moment when Ghirahim calls Groose’s hair “appalling”. Somehow that feels even cruler than the excruciating pain Ghirahim puts Zelda in when he tries to resurrect Demise.

I wonder if “Skyward Sword” will get an HD remake in 2021 as “Windwaker” and “Twilight Princess” both got HD remakes about 10 years after their original releases. “Skyward Sword” was put in the Wii U Shop but it’s just a port of the original Wii game. It seems rather pointless since you can play Wii discs on the Wii U and I’m sure most Wii owners did pick up both “Twilight Princess” and “Skyward Sword”.

I bought Skyward Sword from the Wii U Shop. I was late to the party, and downloading was quicker and easier than tracking down a disc.

I liked Fi, but I do think she needed to be toned down. I'd probably play an HD version of Skyward Sword, though the thought of replaying the Silent Realm challenges gives me pause. That part was terrifying.

I think Fi is much less annoying than Navi in the sound category (autotuned gibberish sounds more pleasant to the ear than HEY! LISTEN! HEY! HEY! HEY!) but she gives even more redundant advice.

Remember in Ocarina of Time, when you need to go back to Kokiri Forest and talk to Saria in order to learn a song that's neccessary to complete Goron City?

I have no idea how you were supposed to know to do that, other than stumbling around Goron City for half an hour until Navi tells you, "Go see Saria, you idiot".

I think you were clued in by the tunnel to the Lost Woods, which was playing Saria's Song. Which required you to explore.

Games back then required a lot more exploration than games now, do. *prepares to yell at cloud* Kids today don't know how easy they have it, with their minimaps, and objective points, and autosaving. Back in MAH day, we had to look around on our own, and if we came across someplace we weren't supposed to be, WE GOT FUCKING REKT BY OVERLEVELED MONSTERS, and WEEEEEEEEEEEE LAHKED IT!

The game's plot until then pushed me towards Goron City, so I expected to find the solution there. If there was a hint saying you should drop everything and return to the place that you started the game at, I was unable to find it.

When I learned I was going to become an uncle, I was eager to complete a Zelda game with my neice or nephew as hero. By the time my nephew, Trevor James was born, Windwaker was one of the few console Zelda games I hadn’t already replayed this year. Thus it was on Thursday night that I conquered Windwaker with “Trevor J” as the name of my character. How’s this for crazy: I got Windwaker as a present for Easter 2003, I learned on Easter Sunday 2018 that I was to become an uncle, and I just happened to beat Windwaker with my nephew as hero (will it go round in circles? will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?). The game starts on Link’s birthday and the HD remake was released almost exactly 5 years before Trevor James’ birth. Windwaker is all about seafaring and my nephew was born in Connecticut: a state engulfed in maritime history (just ask anybody who’s visited Mystic Seaport).

It’s kind of appropriate to name a Windwaker hero after an infant as the game wouldn’t be too bad an introduction to the Zelda franchise. The visuals are certainly kid-friendly and while Windwaker doesn’t lack the franchise’s usual cryptic elements, the bad guys aren’t excessively hard to beat if you know what you’re supposed to do. Granted, part of why Windwaker seems realitively easy is because this is my 4th completed playthrough: twice on Gamecube, twice on Wii U. I had no interest in the remake until Nintendo let you download the remake if you registered Mario Kart 8 and a few other select titles.

Windwaker represents one of the biggest slices of humble pie I ever tasted. I was practically insulted that Nintendo was going this route after the awesome darkness of Majora’s Mask. Apparently I was not alone as a big reason why Twilight Princess got so dark was because of poor Windwaker sales. Actually playing Windwaker made me realize that you shouldn’t judge a game by it’s graphics as Windwaker proved to be a deep and rewarding experience even if I still find it a step down from N64 Zelda. Ironically, Skyward Sword made me see the light (pun intended) and I now actually want Zelda to bright and colorful even if the darker graphics in Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess are still awesome.

Even by Zelda standards, it’s shocking how much the music in Windwaker kicks butt. Windwaker gave us (in my humble opinion) the best title screen music in Zelda history, the best overworld music (the sailing theme) and the best version of the Kakariko Village theme. The music is a big reason why I think Windwaker has the franchise’s best prologue. When Skyward Sword came packaged with a music CD, my biggest complaint with the CD was that Windwaker Medley didn’t have the Sad Grandma theme (baby sister Aryll has a great musical theme has well). When It comes to Buccaneers, I’ll take Windwaker’s pirate theme anyday over “Yo-Ho Yo-Ho A Pirate’s Life For Me”.

In early 2003, my family went to the cinema (I believe it was to see Daredevil) and we got into the theater just as a commercial for Windwaker was being shown. It was really cool seeing Windwaker on the big screen as though it was a trailer for an animated film. Illumination may make a Zelda movie if their Mario movie is financially successful (as all Illumination films have been so far) but I say if you want an idea of what a good animated Zelda movie would look like, watch Disney’s 1985 film The Black Cauldron.
