I think A link between worlds has the best overworld so far. I felt more for it than any other overworld in the series. The dungeons on the other hand...

And why are you framing 'optional' as an inherently good thing? The optional items have always been the sucky ones, because the designers could never assume you'd have them.

Sure, of course they have to do things with optional items.

And in fact, they did in the past. Remember how the Ice Rod worked on the Lanmolas in the Desert Palace even though you don't have to get it until Turtle Rock?

It's just another thing that was sidelined in the leap to 3D.

No, I don't remember that. I never bothered to try stuff like that.

I did, however, make an effort to use the sword techniques you got from the Hero's Shade in TP.

[up]One thing.

Meanwhile, the Ice Rod could be used on pretty much anything... and it provided a "secret" method of refilling magic once you use the hammer in conjunction with it.

The aforementioned Hidden Skills and item upgrades in TP and SS are completely optional ways to add better variety to your combat.

Deku Nuts in OOT/MM are a completely optional item that work on most enemies, Gohma, Odolwa, and Ganon. Fire/Ice Arrows are an optional weapon in OOT, but both provide another, stronger way to fight enemies via burning/freezing, with the Fire Arrows also making some later puzzles easier.

But yeah, sure, just one thing, all hail our glorious 2D overlords.

Alright, OoT and MM did have a little bit of it which I neglected, sorry about that.

But then TP and SS have pretty much no use for the optional items.

How often did you guys talk about this? I'm pretty sure you always get to the same conclusion every time, so why even bother talking about this again?

At this stage, I feel like it's clear no one is going to be able to change anyone else's mind and thus all further talk like this is just asking for escalation.

I sure said that!

Yeah, I'm missing the time when talking about Zelda was actually fun and relaxing. This whole doomsday crap (and, most importantly, how often it's shoehorned in almost every conversation) makes me hate this thread, especially since it's moot now that we have A Link Between Worlds and eventually Breath of the Wild.

I myself have had issues with the series, all of us do in one way or another, but it's important to know when enough is enough.

For example, we could talk about the very extensive interview between Aonuma and Eurogamer, which addresses the following points:

  • Why BOTW took so long to come out.
  • That they never considered cancelling the Wii U version, despite the importance of the Switch version.
  • The possibility of a female playable character (not necessarily female Link, just someone else).
  • How fan feedback inspired the game's open-ended nature.

I'm personally all for a game where you can play as Link and Zelda throughout the whole game. Not like in Spirit Tracks, but more like the two-character dungeons in Wind Waker.

That alone would open up a lot of gameplay concepts regarding combinations in combat, puzzle solving, and storytelling. Plus there's a reason to have at least a little bit of story progression in dungeons instead of just letting the story stall when you're in one.

Could I get a link to this interview please?

Also, I'm not surprised that they maintained the wii u version anyways. That's exactly what they did with Twilight Princess.

I think it was most sensible thing they have could have done,it means people (like me) who don't have the cash to buy a next gen console get to play the next zelda game, sales from Wii U and Switch version will great boons for Nintendo.

So i'm going to show them my gratitude by buying the game when it becomes available

Man, I'm so undecided. On the one hand, I remember the butchered Wii port of Twilight Princess and think I should get Breath of the Wild on Wii U, where I feel it "belongs." On the other, I'm not seeing any evidence of butchery this time, and I strongly suspect there's going to be some advantage to buying/playing the game on the Switch.

I'm unwilling to buy the game twice over (what is this, Mario Kart 8?), so what do you guys recommend?

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

About the interview, these are the bits I found most relevant:

Going back to where we started, and the new footage, let's talk about Zelda. Fans seem to love her design in Breath of the Wild - there's already a lot of fan art. But reaction seems split on her crying during the trailer, with some saying it demonstrates a lack of strength, others saying it's good she's showing emotion. I wondered what your take on that was.

Aonuma: Regarding how Princess Zelda is portrayed in the trailer, obviously everyone has their own ideas of exactly how they would expect a female character to act or behave. What I would particularly like to emphasise is that the scene of her crying in the trailer is just one scene from the game - within the trailer itself it forms a dramatic high point, but that shouldn't be taken too much out of context.

Princess Zelda as she appears in the game as a whole is very complex and multi-faceted, and it's not as if she's crying all the time in the game [laughs], so I would ask fans not to read too much into just that one scene from the trailer, and to please play the game and appreciate Zelda as she is in all her aspects.

Sounds like Aonuma might have gotten wind of the complaints. They were dumb, really, as we discussed before Zelda crying is not only just a small snippet of her character (which Aonuma himself pointed out), but they showed a more human side to her since Zelda rarely shows that kind of vulnerability. Obviously there was more to her, but I'm interested in just how much more.

It sounds like a major undertaking and development - it's a massive game you're releasing across two different platforms. I'd love to know the challenges of creating such a big game and making sure that it was done in time for the launch of Nintendo Switch.

Aonuma: Yes, this was a development process where on numerous occasions we've had to say, "Sorry, we need more time", and because the process was so long there were actually a lot of problems that got naturally resolved over time.

[...]

Another example of a challenge we faced was the physics engine. We wanted a consistent physics engine throughout the world that worked in a logical and realistic way. Actually implementing that was sometimes more complicated than it seemed. [For example], one day I picked up the latest build of the game and went to an area, and saw that all the objects that were supposed to be in that area weren't there. I was quite surprised and confused, and I realised after asking the programmer, the reason the objects weren't there was because the wind in-game had blown them all away.

That's the kind of challenge we faced, making the physics engine realistic, but not to the extent that it would negatively impact things - striking a balance between realism and having it work within the game world.

I really think the implementation of this physics engine is a major development for the Zelda series. The way the physics engine underpins everything in the world really offers up a lot of new possibilities. For instance, in Breath of the Wild you might have a puzzle where making use of the physics, there'll be various ways you can solve that puzzle. That really opens up a lot of possibilities so there's not just one way to progress in the game or just one way to solve a puzzle.

I don't want to start another hullabaloo about puzzles since I know it's a testy subject, but I'm glad that this was something that they thought about. I think having multiple solutions to puzzles is pretty cool and interesting and encourages out-of-the-box thinking.

Is BOTW using Havok/any other established physics engine or are they building their own, shiny new physics engine?

If it's the latter, I want to see it in more Nintendo games.

I've gotten the impression it's one they made themselves. That's part of why Bot W has taken so long to come out.

If there's anything I hope BOTW will do lore-wise for the series, it's to fix the Master Sword's backstory from being made to open a gate.
