Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

They don't look at all like Warriors back in the old art piece.

Also sad we don't get Black Mage.

He casts the spells that makes the peoples falls down.

I mean when it comes to the four warriors shown...

Warrior has always been distinct by his helmet

Most of the art depicts A white mage, A second swordsman 'most likely thief' and then fourth character no one could ever figure out due to the fact he was wielding what looked like a spear The novel just went with Warrior, White Mage, Black Mage and Thief

I mean White mage seems to have taken a page from warhammer mages and is decked out for COMBAT medic duty though with that logic the heavily armored warrior is Black Mage and he decided not to skip leg day... I mean a Halbred is just a staff with a stabby/slashy ending if you think about it

Thief has upgraded to Ninja

I'm going to be devil's advocate here and, speaking as someone who didn't like 13 or even touch 15, why does Serah/Lightning being the last playable female main character matter?

Does that actually matter to you in a Japanese RPG franchise? Why does it matter? I can't see anyone not picking up a Final Fantasy because the main character is male.

Final Fantasy in particular seems to get this criticism more than any other JRPG I know of. Not looking to argue just genuinely curious why it is such a talking point on this forum.

I suppose it's because in such a long running franchise, only two women have been the MC, and even then it comes with caveats, like the story being more of an ensemble than focusing on the growth of the female lead.

It's really weird how there hasn't been a playable female character in a mainline FF game in years aside from the FF 7 remake.

I think the Sinatra song baffles people because it's an apparent mismatch with the low budget, ultra macho So P. I say that, but when it came on with the credits after the genuinely emotional ending it actually got to me. That may be because that specific song has some memories attached to it for me, but it worked nonetheless.

The part that took people by surprise was the fact that unlike “Stand By Me” in XV, which was a cover of that song exclusively made for that game, it’s straight up the original song. Still was used great in the game itself, though.

And yeah, it would be nice to have another female protagonist in a mainline FF sooner rather than later.

basically back then Lightning was overhyped as the next Cloud, The FF character that the Fandom would worship

Now with the above[up]X3 in mind... the fact that XV... had a regrettably treated female lead

X3 being as well thought out as the Star wars Sequel Trilogy/ What it did to Yuna

Lightning is more scrutinized cause she was suppose to be SE's serious attempt with a woman as the LEAD character to the point they threw Terra, Ashe and Yuna under the bus to hype her up

thats the thing Lightning doesn't really hold up years later

Like She's suppose to be the next Cloud? She's got more in common with Squall and doesn't have his character arc/ inner running monologue to endear you to her Like Lightning is just a forced to grow up to fast Twenty something and is bitter about it and its only in the sequels the real nutty stuff gets applied and well the revelation ultimately being the Creator God is obsessed with her kinda rings phony nowadays

It doesn't help that the two things that are suppose to soften her personality so you see her goodside is her treatment of Hope and Devotion to Serah.

Relationship Writing Fumble is in full effect so both relationships which is suppose to show her big sister qualities gets interpreted as... something else

Kinda sucks that Lightning has to bear the cross of repping FF female M Cs as the face of a... controversial series, whereas, say, Noctis gets no such burden.

It’s not like Lightning is hugely unpopular or anything, last I checked she’s still got a sizable fanbase.

I mean it helps that the hatedom for XIII has largely cooled off or moved on by this point.

Lightning did become the most powerful MC in the franchise.

She literally kills God while the universe gets rebooted.

Then she becomes a Louis Vuitton model in the new Earth. :v

I think Lightning's backlash was because she felt too forced by Square, trying to get Cloud popularity in a fraction of the time. Plus being a lead in a base breaking game where every action just helped the Big Bad and their plan.

Didn't Square also advertise her as the first female lead, which annoyed FFVI fans?

Square always claimed that VI never really had a lead, it had like 3 co-leads.

I think VIII might be the only one to avert this, you do a pretty good job mitigating the damage Ultimicia can do up to the point where you corner her and defeat her. She can only ever enact Time Compression because the heroes use it as a trap even.

Well, II also has the heroes succeeding a lot and not falling into so many traps that actually enable the villains, its just that the Emperor has the Rebel Army hopelessly outgunned for the most part.

The party in X don't really help Yevon, either.

XII was more the party being like two steps behind the antagonists.

V, though, hoo boy.

II, V, and IX all have a lot of the heroes utterly failing for most of the game. IIRC II was actually one of the earliest games notorious for a large amount of Permanently Missable Content, due to all the places the Emperor blows up with the not-Death Star?

I mean, while the other games have the heroes unknowingly helping the villains to various degrees, I feel that XIII came off as the heroes moving forward to continue doing the bad guy's goals after he told them what his goals were. They want to kill the villain, which is what the villain's end goal is, and they just keep saying how they will save the day by doing what the villain wants. It's like Exdeath going "I will be freed if you keep using the crystals" and Bartz's team's counter is "We will keep using the crystals to stop you."

Honestly stuff like that is why I love how in Persona 5 the party figures out the villian's plot very early on and immediately starts working to undermine it in the background.

A bit more info on Crisis Core Reunion.

  • Improved camera and character movement
  • There’s a new "menu based" battle system
  • New background music arrangements
  • Scenes that were text only in the original will now get full voice acting.
