Because Kinkajou told me to.
So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?
My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.
I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Imagine people's faces when they see Cloud deflect Sephiroth's sword out of the air to save Aeris and it flies across the room and into Tifa.

Cait Sith dies. Again.

Sephiroth comes down from on high with his sword pointed. Unfortunately he's miles off course and ends up stabbing Touch Me. ;_;
Cloud tries to take the hit for Aerith, but he just ends up getting pierced alongside her.
Lifestream shenanigans take place to preserve the last Cetra and Aerith's soul gets shoved into Cloud's body with her body's remaining reserves being used to heal his fatal wound.
Either the souls coexist and they use Cloud's body as a timeshare, or Cloud's soul is lost and Aerith just flat out becomes the new surprise main character.
"But if that happened, Melia might actually be happy. We can't have that." - Handsome RobA bit too late for that. We already have mention of the assassination attempt on President Shinra from Before Crisis and one of Don Corneo's men from a VII novel. I think I've heard there's a nod to Deepground as well.
Cloud's fake persona of Zack will manifest itself into an actual living person somehow called Clack because apparently that's a common thing to do in Square worlds. Cloud will fight him, then Clack will be killed by Sephiroth instead of Aerith and Aerith will live past disc 1.
Then time travel will eventually fix this change by having Aerith look like Sephiroth because Cetra magic of fixed time points with going to such a iconic point in the game and Sepherith will kill Aerith to avoid time paradoxes.
So now Cloud is Cloud with Clack being peacefully body/mind merged into Cloud and at the same time brutually murdered by being absorbed. Cloud now slightly darker blonde hair but acts the same as before and defeats Sephiroth in song. And Tifa makes out with Vincent while Genesis is punched by Cid. Roll credits.
-Witty line-Cloud assaulting Aerith is pretty much her main reason for running off alone cause she finally realizes whats going on with him 'everybody else can't put two and two together... well Tifa suspects but is too emotional messed up by the implications to spit it out'
Ugh, they gave Aerith those "magic missile" attacks in VII R.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I mean if she was in the melee all the time she'd probably die a lot being a Squishy Wizard and all.
IGNORE!

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Well, they can't keep her in the backrow this time.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.A florist doesn't strike me as the kind of person capable of getting up close and personal and thwacking everyone with a stick like she's fucking Donatello.
I get it's not the most visually interesting fighting style in the world, but it's consistent with the character.
Plus there is a good reason, games got some playable symmetry if you have the option of two ranged characters and two melee characters.
I always gave Aerith Enemy Skill Materia so she could spam Matra Magic once I left Midgar, so that doesn't bother me.
I do that too. If only because when she does Matra Magic, it looks like the missiles are coming out of her arse.
...I'm never gonna be able to replay FFVII without noticing that from now on, so I hope you're happy about that.
I will not apologize for art.
That's what she did. Her attack was leaping forward and whacking monsters exactly like fucking Donatello.
Aerith was a flower girl who inexplicably carried around a staff and somehow (repeatedly) evaded a group of elite mercs in a monster-ridden ghetto. She potentially kills multiple armed Shinra soldiers while she and Cloud escape from the church.
Like. Who even taught her how to fight? Nothing in her house, or dialogue, indicated that her 'mom' knew how to fight. Granted, her limit breaks were also inexplicable magical healing moves.
It's more than just a visually unappealing fighting style - it's an aesthetic Berserk Button that punctuates everything I dislike about XIII. I despised the "ruin" spell in 13 and every variation of it.
I was interested to see them translate Aerith into 3D combat and... they decided she can just fling magic missiles at people. Yay. I fear they'll do the same to Cait Sith.
I'm conflicted on this
- now she can help during the fight in the elevator at Shinra HQ
- it was hilarious that (if you didn't equip Red and Aerith with the right materia prior) only Barrett could actually fight the boss

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!> Like. Who even taught her how to fight?
She lives in the slums I'm sure she learned how to defend herself after many close calls
New theme music also a boxAerith grew up in violent crime ridden slums oversaw by a corporate police state that wants to capture her.
I would be more surprised if she somehow didn't learn to fight, honestly.
And that does kind of capture what makes her so great. Shes kind and compassionate, but that doesn't mean she's innocently naive or can't take care of herself.
Though the change was indeed likely made for gameplay balance reasons.
It's like being in the Conan: The Barbarian universe. If you don't have thighs thick enough to qualify as bridge supports, you officially qualify for humanitarian aid. In an RPG universe, if you are a playable character, you automatically have fully developed combat skills regardless of your ostensible background.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
I nominate Cid.
