Because Kinkajou told me to.
So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?
My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.
I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Nah cuz Fang and Vanille stop the fall of coccoon therby stopping that clogging of the doors to heaven.
Yes he did, but not in the exact way he presented and didn’t work immediately. It exposed and weakened Etro but it took another 500 years to complete his goal of killing her leading to the return of his god that will recreate the world... only for Lightning to kill him too 500 years after that and hijack that new world.

TMW the gods fuck up so hard they destroy themselves and the universe.
Life is more fun with infinite MP.Booted up FFVI because I'm on an RPG kick and it's still probably the best game in the series.
I couldn't find a sword for Celes for her big "here's how you use Runic" fight, so she ended up punching a tank with her bare fists until it died.
And that's why any classic era FF protag is automatically better than Link. Forgot to bring a weapon? Fuck it I'll just be the MOTHERFUCKING FIST OF THE NORTH STAR JESUS CHRIST and punch that tank to fucking death up yours Gestahl
I'm quite confident in my shitposting you knowNot now im subplexing a train
New theme music also a boxGaluf starts off without a weapon. It's a nice nudge to show the viability of Monk.
Life is more fun with infinite MP.I'll always find it amusing how Fantasy Final started out by coping Dungeons and Dragon''s classes and monsters (they've had beholders before which is a dead give away)
New theme music also a boxSephiroth was still the first FF villain with a real explanation of why he is the way he is. His descent to villainy in Cloud's Past is one of the most iconic moments in FFVII. Is it abit clumsy? Sure, it's the first time they've ever even tried to really give a detailed account of how the Big Bad became evil. He's the first villain with any sort of tragedy to him. (and no, fuck Xande. He's barely in FF 3.)
That's why Hojo is the real evil of FFVII. Cloud and Vincent even say as much before the fight with him. All the bad shit in FFVII comes from Hojo. And even Cloud bears no malice for Sephiroth by the end. I always loved his toast to Sephiroth before the final boss, showing he has grown beyond his original quest for vengeance which was a hallmark of the 'fake Cloud."
As for why villains often want to kill everybody in JRPG's and anime, because life sucks. It's really that simple. It's an idea everyone can understand and relate to The Shin Megami Tensei games might only have The White and kill 'em all in one ending but the theme is still the same. Humans suck, life is unbearable and we need to radically change it.
Yuna: "My father... My father wanted...to make Spira's sorrow go away. Not just cover it up with lies!"
Yunalesca: "Sorrow cannot be abolished. It is meaningless to try."
Yuna "My father... I loved him. "So I... I will live with my sorrow, I will live my own life! I will defeat sorrow, in his place. I will stand my ground and be strong. I don't know when it'll be but someday, I will conquer it. And I will do it without...false hope."
This basic exchange is in tons and tons of things. Fuckin' Neutral.
"Detailled" is a bit of a generous understatement. The tragedy of Sephiroth discovering the truth of his origins is also kinda lessened by Sephiroth missing all the obvious red flags and that he doesn't so much "Fall" as he carwheels and divebombs from grace. Including that the person who told him his mom's name is a mad scientist who looks like this◊.
Plus like I said, in the base game, Sephiroth's own fall isn't even about him. It's there for the effect it has on Cloud, and his pre-evil self is there as an artifice for Cloud's character.

It can be both things.
It still bothers me that they never gave Seph more scenes during Crisis Core after he discovers his origin that kinda bridges into him becoming evil better.
You could've included some pretty depressing scenes where Seph earnestly tries to reach out to those he thinks of as his friends, but he just can't relate to them any more knowing what his origin is. And he slowly drifts apart from them and spirals into becoming obsessed with the Ancients.
Yes, it takes away some of that mythical aura he had, but the game already did that.

Kaze ni Nare!I do agree we need to talk more about Hojo AKA Professor "Imma gonna get this girl here raped by this lion/wolf thing and film it and put it up on pornhub I mean for science yes Science. That is totally how we're gonna unlock the Cetra knowledge, though bestiality SCIENCE! Don't question me I have a trustworthy face◊ and nothing about this is weird!"
Exactly. The creator's intentions arguably matter less than fan response. Who would dispute Sephiroth walking through the flames at Nibelheim is one of the most known bits of FFVII? Nothing Cloud does in that whole scenario is nearly as memorable. He gets chumped by a dragon and Sephiroth uses Element 3 All attacks to wipe out groups of enemies which is new and impressive for players at that point of the game. The whole flashback hypes up Sephiroth's ungodly power and how dangerous that power is now it's in the hands of a madman.

There's an ethos I never wanna live by.
Coz yeah... most fandoms are kinda terribad.
True but so can creators. Some creators are notoriously full of shit or just change their mind or are maybe even downright bigoted and hateful.
It's situational for me.
Things can resonate with people for a lot of reasons and sometimes they're not the intended reasons but I don't think that means the feelings aren't real or can't be valuable.
I believe in Death of the Author myself, but I also know a lot of fandoms are full of lunatics.
Bleye knows Sabers.I mean, in general, nuance is often forgotten by fans and the broad ideas are what get remembered.
That's how the phenomenon of unbuilt tropes happens, I believe. Someone tells a story with a lot of nuance, but the broad fanbase only latch onto the surface level stuff, and that gets replicated over the generations.
Kaze ni Nare!Viewers rarely notice nuance.
The vast majority are idiots who take everything at face value.
This is especially true for villains.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Painting your averse viewer as an idiot is disingenuous at best, not everyone looks at a work in the same way
New theme music also a boxI would bet anything that the Evangelion fanbase put more thought into the plot and characters of Eva than Anno ever did.
Doesn't Barthandelus technically win?
