Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

This song is so good and does a lot of heavy lifting in terms of selling how awful Shinra is.

I really liked that moment when you're going through Mr. Corel and unceremoniously walk into the Corel reactor. There's nothing there, no events, no npcs, you just keep moving and leave. But it feels like it's saying to the audience "we may be pursuing Sephiroth, but don't forget who the true enemy is".

FFVII does a lot of excellent world-building like that, juxtaposed with some of the heavy-handed exposition scenes. For example, in the City of the Ancients, the music track and the scenery do a lot to sell the sheer weight of what the Cetra once were, without characters having to launch into speeches about it.

I always found the world building weird.

Like, the game puts emphasis on the Cetra having been nomadic. But they got this city with these super intricate permanent structures that are still around millennia later.

@ Frozen Wolf: summons are not only real, they do damage to you. Even if their attack animations are insanely over the top, if they can hurt your party or the enemy, they still did that level of damage.

Super Nova isn't just spectacle, the ultimania classifies it as a real attack thats similar in nature to a summon, with sephiroth literally taking his opponents, trapping them in another dimension, and letting the attack loose, becasue he doesn't want to destroy the world with it, as its against his goal of using the planet as a glorifed space ship.

Just saying.

[up]That's insane, though. The attacks made by some of the summons are ridiculously unsurvivable; I don't care what the lore says. Yeah, it's anime, but I don't accept that as a universal excuse for absurdity.

Heck, Sephiroth can use Super Nova multiple times in the battle. Go to Hades with that "it's an alternate dimension" stuff. [lol]

[up][up]You need to be able to survive it in order to defeat the final bosses of these games. Its also stated to be a different dimension each time he uses it.

Same with Bravely default, in which you can tank the damage of a god who literally throws Big Bangs at you that destroy entire universes.

And its that anime as fuck nature with JRPG's that I love about them, even if some stories are better then others.

There's so much wrong about that logic. The first of which being WHY DOES HE BRING THEM BACK after? Or heck, why does he even need the planet as a spaceship at all.

And don't tell me Cloud and co are such badasses they can cross dimensions to follow him back when they are regularly foiled by waist-high fences and need to go on a quest to breed super inbred birds cross bodies of water.

Also "They literally did that level of damage" makes it weird all the times the fights take place next to another third party. Apparently the Bronco can be downed by a regular Shinra rifle but tank the multiple summons I dropped on Palmer. Ergo Shinra rifles are stronger than any summon in the game.

Trying to argue about how literal the attacks in turn-based JRPGs are is thinking about it too hard. It's guaranteed, even just by the fact that the combatants stand in place and take turns, that what happens in the fights isn't literally what's going on in-universe. But trying to draw some line what exactly is literal and what isn't is a pointless waste of time. There's not going to be an answer everyone will agree with, and you're thinking about it harder than even the developers of the game did.

Remember Eden in FFVIII sent the enemy literally into the center of another galaxy and blew that galaxy up.... which does less damage than Squall's Lionheart.

And to think Eden is coming to FFXIV cool

It's quite funny when you consider Sin's insta-KO attack is less in scale to the likes of Supernova.

[up]x3 That version also didn't have the insane long animation and all that. It was just a weak attack that did 2k ish damage.

And ONLY that original Japanese version had that, the newer Japanese releases use the full attack plus all the West exclusive content.

[up]x2 it inflicts Confuse, Silence, and Slow. THAT can kill a party when your HP is at 15/16th of your previous HP pool, yeah.

The other dimension BS DOES NOT WORK

So Zack who canonically Fights and Defeats Bahamut Retsu

Who does that

is then later felled by a small army using guns and Zack does this before he is at the height of his strength

My favorite summon in FFVII is Bahamut Zero, which freaking nukes the planet from space. If characters can literally tank that, nothing should ever be a threat to them.
