Final Fantasy general

Go To

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

[up][up]I guess the answer to that is how well regarded XIII still is today.

At least in the west I haven't really seen it vindicated by history the way a lot of people like to say the rest of the series has been.

[up]It's funny you mention that.

Before XIII and Skyward Sword, I saw a pattern where both those series always had the latest entry be the most controversial entry, which eventually got vindicated by history or at least earned a respectable place in people's memory. See Majora's Mask/Wind Waker, FFXII, etc.

I was sure the same was gonna happen with Breath of the Wild and XIII, but it actually hasn't. Bot W is a smash hit and very popular/well liked, while XV is popular but kinda divisive. Meanwhile SS and XIII's reputations have remained pretty much the same.

Zelda and mainline FF have a lot of parallels regarding that, thinking about it.

VII and Ocarina were instant classics, with the first pretty much putting JRPGs on the map. Every game in both series since have had that period where people would hold them up to scrutiny before eventually settling on ultimately liking them, except for those two entries you mentioned.

I don't think XV and Breath of the Wild are that similar, though it is a funny coincidence that both are open world takes on traditionally linear Japanese roleplaying game experiences. BOTW is pretty much universally praised barring some hold outs here and there. I don't think XV's going to be looked back at nearly as favorably.

Zelda's also has a reputation for being somewhat same-y and formulaic, so BOTW means more than XV given every mainline FF tries to reinvent the wheel anyway.

Honestly I have to wonder if after all this fuss, is XV even gonna be a game that stays with people? I don't deny that it has a sizable number of fans but so does every AAA game that people eventually move on from. With the way people talk about it I'm not sure it would really be remembered down the line if it wasn't a Final Fantasy title.

I'll remember it, but not for good reasons. You might be right about it being less memorable if it wasn't an FF title too.

They stuck with the 012 remix of A Contest Of Aeons. It is a great track but I was hoping they'd have a new version or use the new Record Keeper version.

[up]Mentioned last page.

Not sure I like her only summoning Valefor, but whatever. She was my main back then, and she's enough to get me back into NT.

Edit: Looking at it again, I think she's using the attacks from the other summons alongside normal spells, but Valefor is the only one that's physically there. It's been years since I've personally played X, but I remember the aeons having their own magic circles or whatever associated with them. I think the glyphs that appear when Yuna is casting certain spells are supposed to represent her summons without them needing to be modeled.

I noticed this when she used some needle gun attack, and the symbol of the Magus Sisters appear (or at least I think it's their symbol... The glyph is yellow and has a "bee" pattern in the middle of it).

For those who care about Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels, they are now backwards compatible with Xbox One with enhancements for the X.

Well I actually kinda like XIII and love XIII-2 so that's good to hear.

Don't have an Xbone though. Girlfriend does, maybe I'll get her the games.

But on the topic of FF game reputations though, I think time has been kind to XIII. It sold well on Steam, has a decent review score on Steam, and I just generally don't se the foaming resentment I used to.

Sadly, XIII-2's stock seems to have fallen. :( When it first came out everyone said how much better than than its predecessor it was. That is no more. I blame the game being way easier. It is better in most every other way.

IDK about you but I still see plenty of people saying XIII was bad or just mediocre, if anything I guess XV coming out more recently means people are complaining about it instead.

XV has a lot more issues than XIII ever did. Especially now where the PC port is just screwed out of content.

Opinions on that matter seem a bit split. If anything I have seen the opposite said more often, XIII was underwhelming and XV is highly flawed but in contrast, it at least has a decent hook that's enough for a lot of people. To an extent these internet opinions don't really represent the wider FF fanbase because both games sold very well and have their fans, but I don't really think either of them will ever be considered among the best in the franchise.

I had one friend today tell me that while he likes XV, he recently watched the early trailers and is now bummed that we didn't get that.

That seems to be a common sentiment; even fans of XV are liable to admit that the early concepts of what the game looked like appeared to be far more interesting.

While I kind of agree I also think it's important to mention that all the early ideas of what Versus was supposed to be were vague concepts; the game was like what, 25% complete at most when Tabata took the reins? Knowing Nomura I wouldn't be surprised if the execution had been lackluster even if the project had been better managed and they got it done on time.

If it was 25% complete then what Tabata only made 25% of what turned out to be only half a game.

Eh. He was fighting a losing battle from the start anyways, it was going to be quite difficult for XV to turn out great in those conditions.

Even the leakers that criticized the state of the game where very clear that Tabata was fighting an uphill battle and doing his best to give his team direction and morale so I really find it hard to dislike the guy even if XV turned out sour.

All of his past projects and even the post game content for XV were mediocre, too. XV itself was a shitshow and I can understand it coming out poorly due to everything involved, but when they've had the time and resources to make improvements and none of them turn out great, I can't say I'm in the guy's corner.

I'm not saying he's a bad dude, but I don't think he's a great video game producer.

I wouldn't call Final Fantasy Type-0 mediocre in any stretch of the imagination, even if it's not as popular as any main entry. Just so people know, Tabata directed Type-0.
