[up]x2 I haven't finished the dub yet, and I concur that it's very high quality... but I find it difficult to understand Karane 1/3 of the time, meaning her jokes and moments fall flat by having to rewind trying to figure out what she said. sad

Okay, so while I already heard fair bits about this manga already, but this video by Gigguk reignited my interest:

As someone who grew to hate many of the harem animes because of there's always only one winner and many losers, the very idea of everyone being winner fascinated me.

Also...uh...is, is the author really going to create literally 100 girlfriends? I heard that so far there are around 25 of them, yeah, but it sounds like a massive challenge, to say the least.

Well, good luck to the author...if nothing else, I certainly commend their determination.

Don't know if they'll actually get to 100, but the artist and author (they're two people in this case) are definitely committed to trying to get there. Like I said last page, as of our most recent GF we're at 27 and counting.

The creators are generally very good at giving everyone some attention. While some characters do fall a bit behind on screen time, they do eventually get their chances. A good example of this is Momiji, who's a fairly static character and generally features as a side character in most chapters, but there was a relatively recent chapter where she and a girlfriend she's classmates with, Kurumi, have to withstand an absurdly strict line for a rare treat.

The characters generally get grouped up into pairs or trios that are most often seen together (Kurumi and Momiji, for instance, Hakari and Karane, etc) with little mix-ups here and there (primarily the 'Rentaro Family's Daily Life' chapters)

Gigguk was spot on in his video: 100 GF sincerely tries to give every single girl screentime and character development, and the author and artist have stated multiple times they're dead serious about hitting 100. The author even already has a list of character traits for all one hundred.

Anyway, welcome to the cult, err, family, diddyknux!

Wait, holy crap, for real? Jesus Christ, what a madman.

Aight, definitely putting this anime/manga in the watch/read later list!

Oh man, episode three was too cute. Shizuka is adorable.

A couple of you said before you sometimes have trouble understanding Karane in the dub, but I don't get that at all. I actually have trouble understanding Hikari more often.

[up][up] He does mentioned he’s had to revise several characters because of various reasons, but yes he does have an initial draft for all one hundred.

[up] No comments on the dub since I don’t think anyone is hard to understand, but I did want to mention her name is Hakari, not Hikari.

Whoops. My bad, I guess Digimon was intruding on my name recognition.

Also... I lied about the not wanting to be spoiled thing, I ended up peeking at the character page a little. I didn't expect the girlfriends to run such a wide array of ages. Maybe its because the anime has only gotten to too much of that so far, but I feel like I don't see much controversy about that, which is a little rare for an anime/manga. But again, might just be too early.

Girlfriends numbers 12 and 16 will give you the full spectrum age-wise, though Hahari (Hakari's mother) remains second oldest.

Eiai is quite a shift. The first girl to not (well, more like deny she did) fall for Rentarou back instantly, and yet ironically for that scenario, the first girl to actually have a date with him. Likely only the first of many girls who will need to be convinced to "let their hearts guide them" to even start dating Rentarou. But her scenes of trying to overcome her "logic" and let her feelings through were very sweet.

Its funny though - In some ways Rentarou could be read as kind of manipulative. In episode 4 he made an excuse to leave so Hakari and Karane could help Shizuka break through her timidness, and then in this episode going to burn the photos he took with Eiai to make her realize they do mean something to her. So far its always been to help the girls realize parts of themselves they've been hiding away, but I could imagine it potentially being problematic with some of them in the future.

With 96 more girls to meet, its kind of insane to think of the wildly varying ways their encounters and getting together could happen. We already have a daughter and mother in the group. Mark my words; at some point? Twins. Also at some point: Two girls who were already a couple themselves. ...Hey, with 100 girls, the writer is probably gonna hit on all the cliche points at some points along the way. tongue

I'm looking forward to seeing what you think about Rentarou as you continue with the series, since it becomes quite clear that he's unhinged in his own way.

As for controversy, there was definitely some hubbub over a few of the girls, but it's generally understood that 100 GF is a parody, so.

You're saying that like Hakari and Karane aren't?

I've read the character pages a little (I'm sorry, when I start a new series, I have trouble stopping myself from Troping) and a lot of them mention the word "Deconstruction" and... I know I'm new here, but I'm not really feeling that at all? Certainly, characters are so over the top as to be parody, and we do see the ways in which those character tropes have caused them trouble, but... It doesn't seem like there's any pressure on them to change who they are. Certainly not from Rentarou. That's not to say they don't want to expand their horizons and outlooks and stuff.. Heck, that's one of the reasons Nano decided to get with Rentarou.

I just don't know if I necessarily would define that as Deconstruction.

Anyway, hello girlfriend number 5, Kusuri! I like the twist with her actual age, its like a double twist. I thought the twist was gonna be that the Statuesque Stunner version was from a drug, and the small version was her real self... But its the other way around. Except in a way its not, because her aging drug has permanently altered her and she only becomes her tall buxom self for small periods of time when she uses counteracting drugs. And she prefers the smaller form most of the time anyway. Rentarou likes her that way, but as a fan of tall girls with flowing red hair, I can't help but be a little sad, lol.

That's okay! 95 girls to go, I'm sure there'll be more redheads in there somewhere!

Shadow-Whisperer Since: Jun, 2022

[up] Well, there is certaintly a redhead with long hair in the future, you are just going to have to wait for sometime before you reach her (she wouldn't appear for season 2, at the very least). tongue

Also, I think the deconstructions are more of a later thing (while there is some already, you won't find much in season 1), when some of the first girls are revisited and further examined, while some of the later are introduced like that. It varies from girlfriend to girlfriend, but in general, the deconstruction part is more to show that despite being based of cliches and tropes, there is more to the girls, generally by taking those same tropes to further and further extremes.

For example, Karane is a tsudere, and by forcing her in many different scenarios, the series constantly raises the question of "What would a tsudere do here?", and then goes a step further beyond by actually answering the question. So, Karane remains a tsudere at her core, and yet, at the same time, the series makes her a more three-dimesional character.

Personally I do think that the Character sheets are determined to shoehorn in Deconstructed Character Archetype into every character, regardless of whether they fit or not. Been a while since I looked at them but I can't imagine that each and everyone actually applies.

Got curious and checked the character sheets, saw the entry for Deconstructed Character Archetype for Hakari and, uhh, yeah it's reaching a bit. More than a bit.

I think it's worth keeping in mind that you can play with tropes without necessarily deconstructing them.

New chapter, and oh boy was it packed with infinite fun! We finally get a god to show up and cause trouble by granting Matsuri's wish; Rentarou decides to be absolutely fucking terrifying in retaliation for said god making her cry. Almost wish we somehow got an epic battle scene considering the spoof, but either way, this was good. Also, shut up, God.

This chapter went full horror between the endless festival and Rentarou's god-killer mode. Oh, Rentarou, you're fucking terrifying.

This chapter is also a boon for readers who want supernatural girlfriends. Certainly opens up the possibilities.

I like how you can tell Matsuri's still the newbie of the group because she isn't quite grasping why the other girls are doing what they do, but nonetheless grasps that it stems from the things they love doing.

[up]x2 You bet I'm thrilled by the implications of this chapter, it's only time for a goddess grilfriend grin.

Also I feel there is a trend of giving new gf a focus chapter a couple chapters after their introductiobn, after letting them interact and mingle a bit with the rest of the family. I think its a formula that works, but also I'm expecting a future gf that will be a "challenge" and will requiere a mini arc for herself before she joins the rest.

There's definitely a trend there. You can see it as early as Chiyo. She gets her Zing and Meet The Family chapters, then we her the merchandising chapter, then the one where Chiyo tries to ban kissing. A couple separate chapters later Naddy joins.

I would like another mini-arc, really. Watching the anime recently reminded me of how strong the Rescue Hakari arc was in terms of character interactions and so on. Not that the series has gotten worse about that or anything, it's just fun seeing the chaos of the Ren Fam being turned toward a specific goal.

It's been fun.

I'm still hoping for a "VR RPG" mini-arc here. Come on. Do it Nakamura.
