Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.
(Edited Mar 28 2024, adding bullet about OTC and amending layout a little)

Following this att thread, why was It's'a Wario Time! in the videogame subforum locked? Having read it's last post before it was thumped, I thought maybe that was a bit extreme, it was just a mild imagination/dream that the poster had about Wario. Still I can understand a mod thinking that's too off topic for the thread. What I don't understand is why the thread was locked. Yes the newest post was maybe-sorta a necro, but the thread itself seems to be valid. We have threads for subseries, we have a paper mario thread, a donkey kong thread and so on. I don't see why one post being maybe off-topic means the thread has to be locked.

Speaking of locks, is the Jimquisition thread a temporary lock? You know, one of those "everybody, cool down for a while" locks?

Because a permanent one seems...too harsh.

I would think it's permanent, after being egregiously off topic for a solid week. But that's just my opinion.

[up][up][up] Given that it was a necro, there clearly wasn't a lot of interest in the topic, and if it's just for wonderposting and memes, it has no value.

Well what if there's a new wario game, just start a new thread? If that's the answer, I guess that's fine.

What does wonderposting mean in this context? Theories, speculation, headcanons? If they're related to the subject of the thread, then I don't see why they can't be shared. Same with memes, if there's some discussion and not just "look at this!"

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I feel like if a new Wario game gets made, just unlock the thread. There’s no reason to make a new one necessarily.

Unlocking the thread would require moderator action. Making a new thread could be done by anyone.

Admittedly, it's not that much added effort to holler the existing thread with a link to the announcement of Wario Universe 9000 or whatever to ask for it to be unlocked, but it's still some.

I think necroing an old thread for a good reason is better than just demanding people start a new one, which just leads to clutter with duplicate threads in search results. Not that forum search isn't a huge mess already, but regardless, we don't need to add to it.

Well, if someone wants to talk about Wario in terms other than a weird dream they had, we can consider reopening that thread.

Speaking of search, when is that getting fixed? It's been years since the last site update broke it, and it is still just as broken.

I believe the site upgrade request list is very long and doesn’t get much in the way of resources assigned to it (in part because I believe the site doesn’t have a ton of resources).

Yeah, I'll toss in my two cents: it was O.K when I first found the website (around 2016) but the update kinda made it worse.

Alright, this comment struck like a raw nerve with me as a someone who had a brush with a cancer and lived, you don't EVER call people cancer, coming from a moderator this is beyond lame, this is totally unacceptable,it's not cricket,it's foul play

> And those people are cancer. Look, I'm totally fine if this decision makes some people quit the forums. No loss.

Give me a break. You do not get to decide what words are and are not acceptable based on your personal triggers. Using "cancer" and "cancerous" in this sense is common slang, last I heard.

I actually agree with Ultimatum. I even said in that thread that if a normal user had casually referred to groups of people as "cancer," they'd probably get thumped or even suspended for rudeness. I know it's kind of a meme and all, but it's just really immature. There's other ways to express exasperation with annoying, unproductive shitposters.

And "cancer" in Internet lingo isn't the same as "cancerous." I also think that, even though we can't accomodate everybody's triggers, I think Fighteer's tone ("Give me a break") comes across as really dismissive of the fact somebody would even have a trigger. Plus it's not really a ridiculous complaint. I associate "cancer" in the context of Internet lingo with 4chan-style "cringe" trolls. It doesn't have good connotations. ("Cancerous" doesn't have the same connotations - I see "cancerous" to refer to "spreading out of control and causing negative effects" but "cancer" usually just means "I think this thing is, at best, cringe and, at worst, worth eradicating altogether.")

Look, I meant it to be taken exactly as expressed. Sometimes you have to rip off the bandage and say what you mean bluntly. I'm sick of talking around these issues. If someone is that offended, they have permission to leave.

ETA: I don't think I have ever thumped someone for using "cancerous" in that sense and neither has any other moderator, although I'm willing to be proven wrong.
