I thought it has been already established that SoCalization is specifically about Hollywood/Southern California/Los Angeles norms/regional quirks being incorrectly applied to other settings. So [up] that name is way too broad. I would suggest Californication (already mentioned on the page) as an alternative name if people don't know what "So Cal" is.

The problem I see is that Californication has a lot of unrelated meanings.

Term already in use > term we made up.

Glancing at Wikipedia. The oldest uses of "Californication" suggest "mindless development and spread of people to other states, which is a thing BAD California did" but I think nowadays it's understood as a specific form of Americanization, especially since this is the way the Red Hot Chili Peppers used it.

The "mindless development" thing is new to me. Can anyone who was alive in the 70s please enlighten me on whether this term is still used.

Edit: sorry double post. Thought Sep's post was below mine

So, seems like we have a consensus for renaming. Let's see some suggestions.

I would suggest Californication or Californiazation. Production Provincialization does not work because it is far broader than the trope. The whole point of this thread was establishing that this is creators assuming other settings are more similar to Southern California than they are. So the name has to somehow involve Southern California. The current name does that, the issue is that people don't know what "SoCal" means.

[up] It could also be confused with Creator Provincialism, which is when a creator sets a story in their home country; generalizing would make it redundant to We All Live in America (which may itself need a rename). Rename to Californication and make it a subtrope of We All Live in America.

As noted before Californication is a pre-existent term for something else. Also, the trope is focused on Southern California so it's not clear that a more general name is appropriate.

All I got is America Equals Los Angeles (Los Angeles Equals America?), but that would probably get misused as "LA is the only city in the US that matters."

That's a bit too narrow - while the misapplied legal codes are a common type of example, it ain't the only one.

^No New Stock Phrases is an issue. ^^Hollywood Provincialism might work, the other two are unduly America-specific and contain the verb "be" - experience has shown that "X is Y" and even more so "All X are Y"-type trope names are problems.

So, are there any suggestions beside Californication, Californiazation, America Equals Los Angeles, and Hollywood Provincialism? And besides the renaming, is there anything else that needs to be done?

Septimus already cleaned up the description and added some examples, so we are mostly good.

For what it's worth, Californication is already mentioned in the description.

Well, "InsertSubjectHere" isn't the name of the trope we want to rename and it seems like Californication appears twice.

The suggested title "Californication" shares its name with a work, and implies the trope is about sex when it's really not, and has a real-life meaning that is different from what the trope means.

...so I suggest downvoting that one; it's only going to confuse things.

So it looks like Hollywood Provincialism is the winner of the crowner. Anyone have any last minute concerns? Because if not, we should get started with the rename. Edit: Ok, looks like their is no problems, I'm going to holler the mods.
