I think of God as a supremely-frustrated Game Master who keeps watching His players massively fuck up at every single opportunity, and is barely suppressing the urge to just go "Fuck it, y'all are too Stupid Evil to live, so Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies!" (especially since said players are doing such a spectacular job at setting that scenario up on their own)

Getting back on-topic, found this story on a vaccine developed by Novavax:

Novavax reports promising early trial results of COVID-19 vaccine

US biotech company Novavax on Tuesday announced its experimental COVID-19 vaccine elicited a robust immune response, producing more antibodies than are present in recovered patients, and with generally tolerable side-effects in its early-stage trial.

The company was given $1.6 billion by the US government last month to develop and fund the drug under Operation Warp Speed — but in terms of timeline it is behind other firms including Moderna and Astra Zeneca which have entered the final stages of their trials.

It reported in a press release that the phase one stage of its placebo-controlled trial involved 131 healthy adults aged 18-59 and two dose groups of five and 25 micrograms.

Side effects included soreness at the site of injection, headache, fatigue and muscle pain. These were classified as mild to moderate, and none were severe.

After the first dose, all subjects who got the vaccine developed antibodies that block SARS-Co V-2’s “spike protein,” which it uses to latch on to human cells.

Most also developed “neutralizing antibodies” which are more potent and prevent viruses from infecting cells.

After a second dose given 28 days later, all participants had the more powerful neutralizing antibodies.

Novavax reported that the lower dose performed comparably with the higher dose, which is important when it comes to mass production and because lower doses generally elicit fewer side effects.

Antibodies are infection-fighting proteins made by the immune system.

Another part of the immune response comes in the form of T cells, types of white blood cells that have the capability to kill infected cells and which are increasingly thought to play an important role against COVID-19.

Novavax said it looked for these cells in a subset of participants and found they were present.

The trial was supported by funding from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and was conducted at two sites in Australia.

Novavax has not yet shared the detailed findings but said it was submitting the research for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and to medical preprint site medrxiv.org.

The final stage Phase 3 trial of its vaccine, called NVX-Co V 2373, is set to take place this fall.

The Maryland-based company grows synthesized pieces of the SARS-Co V-2’s “spike protein,” which triggers an immune response, inside insect cells in order to help scale up production.

It also uses an “adjuvant,” a compound that boosts the production of neutralizing antibodies.

The company says the drug, which is a liquid formulation, can be stored at two degrees celsius to eight degrees celsius, refrigerator temperature.

In the spring, the company said it had proven the efficacy of a seasonal flu vaccine it had developed using the same technology.

MA is tightening some restrictions. We're not doing that badly, but we are getting an uptick; I hope this is enough of a change, and in time.

Baker slows Mass. reopening process, tightening restrictions on gatherings and restaurants

Baker slows Mass. reopening process, tightening restrictions on gatherings and restaurants

Governor Charlie Baker on Friday announced a series of steps intended to keep the coronavirus from resurging in the state, including a reduction in the limit on outdoor gatherings from 100 to 50 people, and the creation of a new task force to enforce public health directives in harder-hit communities.

“Now we are seeing the virus escalate in certain communities around the Commonwealth and we have to put together a plan working together to stop it,” Baker said during his regular State House briefing. “This fight against COVID 19 is far from over.”

Baker said the “notable decline” in the pandemic here from its springtime peak “has caused some residents to feel a bit too relaxed about the seriousness of this virus.”

Baker said the new limit on outdoor gatherings would now apply on both public and private property. The limit on indoor gatherings will remain at 25.

Baker also said restaurant guidelines would be updated to make clear that alcoholic beverages cannot be served unless they’re accompanied by food prepared on site.

“Bars are closed in Massachusetts, and bars masquerading as restaurants also need to be closed,” he said.

He said health and inspection officials previously had enforced orders, but Friday he was “authorizing all state and local police officers to enforce these orders, and event hosts who violate these orders will be subject to fines.”

Baker said he was creating a COVID Enforcement and Intervention Team to ramp up enforcement in high-risk communities and to coordinate local intervention efforts.

In hard-hit communities, he said, “Our goal is to help parents, families, individuals, and others make the smart decisions that they need to make with respect to their daily activities.”

The governor also said the state was postponing indefinitely Step 2 of the current Phase 3 of its reopening plan.

Step 2 would have allowed many of the venues allowed to open in Phase 3 to welcome patrons indoors, including theaters and performance venues. Additionally, indoor recreational activities with “greater potential for contact,” such as laser tag or roller skating, were set to reopen.

Baker last week had warned that recent large gatherings in communities throughout the state were a “recipe for disaster:” in potentially spreading the coronavirus, and told residents that “we’re going to have to make some changes” if the positive test rate continues to move up.

At the time, he cited a recent lifeguard party in Falmouth, a house party in Chatham, an unauthorized football camp in Weymouth, a Chelmsford party, a Wrentham gathering, and a prom party in Cohasset attended by 90. He also noted reports about a cluster at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield. A party on a private boat in Boston Harbor is also under investigation as a cluster by the Department of Public Health, he said.

Large gatherings were back in the news Friday after a hotel was cited for hosting two large gatherings in the city of Gardner over the past weekend.

Baker said he expected the fines levied against the hotel to spike “significantly” into the range of “thousands of dollars” once each $300 violation from the two events is tabulated.

He added that while “we clearly have some issues with bars and restaurants,” the biggest issue confronting the state’s battle against the coronavirus is “people who are familiar with people, being familiar with them in big groups” with gestures such as hugs and high-fives and activities like dancing.

People depart such events, Baker said, like “little ticking clocks” with the potential to pass the virus along to their families, “and then we’re off.”

The Baker administration said in a statement that the multi-agency COVID enforcement team will have a mandate that includes an array of tasks, such as targeted interventions and inspections; increased enforcement, including fines, of specific guidance for industries; and supporting state alcohol regulators and local licensing boards in asserting their authority to fine restaurants or suspend or cancel liquor licenses when restaurants break the rules.

“One of the things we’re trying to do here is to give local communities, local law enforcement, and the State Police the ability to actually issue a fine,” Baker said.

The governor also noted that the majority of state residents have complied with his various public health directives during the health crisis.

“Everyone has been and continues to sacrifice to deal with this heinous virus,” Baker said.

His words were echoed in the briefing by state Heath and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders.

“We have seen an uptick over the last few weeks” in positive cases, Sudders said. “We all have a role to play in stopping the spread of the virus.”

Baker was also asked about recent comments from Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, who recently said the metro Boston area was one of several major US hubs seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases.

The governor said Friday that Boston’s numbers “are pretty solid’ but surrounding communities in Greater Boston have struggled of late.

“When we start winding these things back, many of them involve private recreational activities,” Baker said.

Lazlo have already post the number-related stuff in this thread, so I'll focus on other stuff that are related to the adventures of Covid-19 in Indonesia.

First, I've posted in this thread one or two months ago a post about a bunch of Indonesian medical workers who were fired for protesting and demanding a better work hours, wages, protective equipment, and a temporary housing, so they can keep working as efficient as possible. I have noticed a "new" development in that news. It is not new because it had happened not long after the news break out. I just noticed it recently, but the news have changed from those medical workers were fired for the aforementioned reason to those medical workers were fired because they refused to treat patients with Covid-19. I mean this is just... ugh...

Second, I live in Bali and if you keep an eye on Bali, you must know that Bali have opened itself for tourists even when it still haven't able to handle Covid-19. I personally can't get too angry at that decision because Bali genuinely need to open up because our economy is just too dependent on tourism and the local government are too greedy and short-sighted, so the thought of expanding the economy never occur to them. BUT, I object to the local government's method to encourage the opening since they pretty much turn a blind eye to Covidiots and Covid denialists here to strengthen their decision to open Bali.

Heck, one of the figurehead of those denialists have even gone as far to claim that those Covid patients are paid actors and he is willing to go the quarantined area in the hospitals to check it himself. Obviously, he is denied entry and this prove that he is right because if he is wrong, why would they hide those patients from him? In conclusion, please don't go to Bali if you love yourself and for the sake of your loved ones.

Third, one of my friends decides that this is the right moment to go hiking and camping at Batur mountain with her friends. Go team stupid!!!

I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.

On the other side of the Pacific, vigilante groups have formed in Hawaii and Canada which pursue non-Hawaiians/Usans breaking quarantine rules.

Here in Switzerland-border-Italy you are asked to wear masks when encountering other people while hiking.

Hiking ought to be pretty safe as COVID activities go so long as you know that nobody in your group is infected. Though it's not exactly risk-free in other ways, and you'd want to avoid getting injured right when the hospitals are being overwhelmed.

[up]x4. Yeah. As long as they bring a mask with them to put on when they run into other hikers, they should be fine. Outdoor activities such as hiking, are pretty low risk.

Indonesia COVID update, and as you guessed it, we're stull stuck deep in it: 2.277 new cases bringing us to 123.503 confirmed cases. 5.658 have died (+65) while 79.306 (+1.749) have been declared recovered or discharged.

It's still an exponential if unsteady growth in Indonesia. That's indeed bad.

Meanwhile in the location I am hiking to - something intermediate between a seasonal town with half a dozen houses and a large Alpine farm - there is a building with a conspicuous "Danger: COVID-19" biological hazard sign in the window. Uhhhhhh...

[up][up][up] No one is going to put on a mask on the fly when walking past someone. On top of it being too much of a hassle, it would rather defeat the purpose of the mask to keep putting it off and on like that.

For the unaware, the rally is a regular thing... ran into it when my family was taking a trip out west in that direction years ago, and I know I've seen it in the news before.

Apparently, they just can't not do it just this year, though.
