OK, here's where this thread is standing, with the unlocking:

Given the widespread backlash and complaining about certain aspects of the work (i.e. Dexit), we wanted to communicate very clearly what we are not willing to put up with: prolonged, circular complaining (or wonking).

Of course, with a controversial subject that has a large impact on the gameplay, Dexit is in one of those areas where there it may be on-topic to discuss it, but the nature of that discussion can wildly vary. As has been said elsewhere, we ix-nayed discussion of Dexit entirely because it never seemed to happen without devolving into that kind of complaining.

However, we're willing to unlock the thread after this 3-day cooldown period because the Pokemon General thread has been stable enough. And -

Can I discuss Dexit?

Yes. But if there is prolonged wonking on it, the thread just becomes an echo chamber of complaints and we do not like that. No one likes that. The same rules as ever apply. Be a constructive, healthy space. Have conversations about what you like, and what you don't like, but the thread should not get locked into a series of bitter complaints.

If you have questions or concerns about mod implementation or action, we have a thread for that here.

Alright? Thank you all for waiting this out. I hope we're all good now.

[up]Uh, yes, they do.

Like I said prior, when they banned Galarian Darmanitan, suddenly the vast majority of teams had the damn snowman. They may not affect it directly, but believe me, every time Smogon makes a stance on banning a Pokemon you can expect a jump in the number of teams that include that Pokemon in comp, granted that they aren't legendary.

Can we please drop this already?

If a majority agree, does it make it right? If a murderer is acquitted by the masses, is their crime vindicated?

If you consider 3.26% usage is "vast majority," maybe. Freaking Kantonian Ninetales sees more use.

So, we have somebody bringing up Smogon and pretending it triggers him, and somebody going around pretending it is irrelevant and that all that matters in VGC rules (as usual).

Real constructive indeed.

Smogon is great for singles, maintains a good competitive community AND simulator, and builds tiers in a way that several different metagames can be played with ease. That's good.

Uh, you seem to be misunderstanding my point. I have no beef about Smogon, though I do say it is harder to document the metagame and tournaments. What I mean is that cartridge isn't somewhere you should play Smogon rules.

And when I say Smogon rules are irrelevant, I mean that they are irrelevant if you play in VGC, and Smogon's decisions does affect VGC players at all.

It's occurred to me that there's an overall theme in this game, and possibly this generation depending on where we go next, about a changing of the guard.

Picture the main characters. Leon, Sonia and Professor Magnolia are the prototypical characters of a Pokémon game: The Player, the Rival, the Professor. But they've already had their adventure, so now Leon is the Champion, Sonia moved on and is becoming the Professor, and Professor Magnolia is constantly out of the picture, since the story she was the Professor to is already over. Marnie, Bede and Hop, meanwhile, are your rivals, but one of them dreams of suceeding his brother (and ends up becoming Sonia's analogue), while the other two succeed Gym Leaders at the end of the game.

And then we have the Gym Leaders. Three of them are concerned about who will succeed them (with Melonie and Gordie representing older and newer demographics of players; anybody who's had a much younger sibling that discovered Pokémon can attest to how different both demographics are), while the others all represent types of players within the franchise: Milo is here for fun, Nessa is a lighter competitive player while Raihan is a deeper competitive player, Kabu is the player who's been experimenting with different challenges to find more ways to enjoy the games, and so on.

This all builds on top of the last generation, which was all about commemorating the history of the franchise thus far, with one game creating the notion that there are several dimensions out there to justify everybody's different games, and the second one having essentially a big party where all the villains of past games showed up for one more go. Both also ended with the Player becoming the de facto champion, unlike past games that had the champion stick around after the Player won.

Not only that, but in terms of mechanics... well, this generation removed, at least symbolically, over half of the previously existing Pokémon in favor of a mostly new roster. The games are also the first to be on a console that's not handheld. Several other little traditions that have, intentionally or not, been part of the games were also broken: more than eight Gym Leaders (and a Dark one at that), open-world areas with non-linear Pokémon levels, and catchable Pokémon visible on the overworld, imported from GO.

I haven't worked out all the details on that analysis (where would Rose and Oleana fit into this, for example), but it makes sense in my head. I'd have to play the game more carefully to find out, but I'm not in that mood just yet. I didn't enjoy the game enough to be playing it until now, if the fact that it took me this long to work out this theme in the game hasn't clued anybody in.

It's bothersome that there's no solution to that other than releasing mons. Like, sure you can trade, but it's 1:1, so your boxes are still full. And you can transfer them to HOME, but there's only so many boxes there, too, so it's just delaying the inevitable.

Let us give mons away, Game Freak!

Pokemon hoarding? More likely than you think, just release stuff.

I never got those people who didn't release stuff as it hatched, for example.

I do enjoy raiding. The inability to reasonably raid on the go is the main reason I put this game down. But now that I'm working from home, I might pick it back up...
