It would be completely busted to let you turn into anyone but I hope they do something different with Shang's shapeshifting compared to 9's limited to just who you're fighting.

They seem to be playing up the "Grim Reaper" aspects of the character. The scary, deep voice and the scythe certainly give off that vibe.

Damn Noob's trailer already got 2.7 million views. Its currently as of this writing the 2nd most trending video for gaming.

One of the story mode clips had Sub Zero and Scoropion unmasked fighting Lin Kuei cyborgs. The same Mecha-Mooks from Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm.

Who would reference THAT of all things?!

Triborg wasn’t a canon character. And Cyber Sub-Zero was a secret variation (selected the same way you could make other fighters variationless).

Hydro was, I believe, from Malibu’s Mortal Kombat Comic series.

EDIT: I was correct. Also, he was in Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

Hydro's one of those characters that exists because despite Death Is Cheap they still didn't want to kill off a big-name character every issue to show off the franchise's famous fatalities.

Speaking of the comic books, it's amazing how much those where written through the lens of "These are superheroes, right?" like Sonya's special forces group is exactly like a generic 90's edgy superhero team.
