It's funny how webnovels have brought us back to the old days of penny dreadfuls where writers were paid by the word. Hence the padding.

This is especially true with Chinese Webnovels, which from what I've seen can go into literally the thousands in terms of Chapter count.

Painfully funny part is - and this might sound really arrogant, but - I already made enough money with my current webnovel. I'm more than ready to just move on already.

UNFORTUNATELY, the scope of my story is far too big and I got way too many plot threads to wrap up. Like, I still have at least 7 major battles to cover. XP

In a more on-topic, I watched Barbie (2023) last night and one of my first thought was: Would this movie technically count as an isekai movie? [lol]evil grin

It's a reverse isekai. Someone from another world ends up in "our" world.

I have a friend who used to write Chinese webnovel. He told me that the key point is to be consistence about your update schedule since it is al about keeping your readers base.

E.T technically is a Isekai movie

[up] Oh, this. So much this.

This is why ideally a webnovel writer should upload punctually every day.

And I too used to do that for about a year before almost going through a mental breakdown. [lol]

I'm often late to shows... Tried out Vending Machine (I'm not gonna type out the full title... Besides, I can't even remember it off the top of my head yet.) Never thought I'd see an anime about a girl and her... vending machine.

Its interesting to me that video game stats and like that became such a staple of the isekai genre, even when there's not an in-universe justification given for it. Its just.... a thing.

Interestingly in Overlord, despite the New World having the mechanics of a game imposed on it, it lacks anything like that. Even Players like Ainz don't have access to "in-game" menu screens since the New World is not actually a game setting.

Levels are still a thing, but no one native to the New World setting seems aware of the concept or how one gains levels. Heck, the natives even have access to powers native to the New World that were not present in the game, while Players like Ainz and npcs do not.

I've been following one mentioned a few pages back, Samurai in Another World, where MC Ginko greatly admires the Blood Knight aspect of the samurai and seeks to die in battle, only to survive the war she finds herself in against all odds and can find nobody strong enough to defeat her one-on-one. She gets isekai'd and a world of monsters seems like just the thing for her. One interesting quirk in it, though, is that because of the prevalence and threat posted by monsters, bloodshed between humanoid races is almost unheard of and considered its highest taboo. This puts Ginko in a spot of bother since the fact she's killed a lot of other humans before coming to this world freaks people right the fuck out.

Another one I've mentioned before is Yomei Nikagetsu no Isekai Kenkouhou, a sick old man and his hospice nurse find themselves in another world. In his prime, the man was a master of Aikido such that he has a bucket list of things he still wants to throw before he dies. When he starts gaining levels in the RPG Mechanics 'Verse, his health improves ever-so-slightly and, while he's still sick, he's better than he was. Hasn't updated for a few months but could just be waiting on a volume release.

On the more comedic side is Sweets, Elf, and a High School Girl, in which an elf with a struggling sweets shop reverse isekais herself into the washing machine of a high school girl who enjoys baking. The elf uses the girl's tips to improve her own shop back home.

Usually with an isekai, the opposite is the case. The protagonist is someone from modern Japan who shouldn't be used to fighting and killing people ending up in a world where it's far more commonplace.

Wortenia Senki is an exception to this even though the protagonist is from modern Japan. He takes to fighting and killing immediately which is why he's able to escape being made a slave upon being summoned to the new world. It's later justified by his grandfather training him to be ready to be summoned because said grandfather was also summoned to the same new world once.

[up] I liked what Isekai Samurai was doing right up until it started in with the usual Adventurers' Guild "Rank F monster" stuff. I forget if it also had levels and classes but it was enough to turn me off it.

It's been fun.

A while back someone mentioned the difficulty of a Physical God in an isekai, and I'm reminded that it happened in Escaflowne Hitomi basically becomes a physical god of fate and destiny.

I have to ask, since this thought appeared two hours ago and is going to drive me nuts if not clarified.

Would The Backrooms count as an isekai???

I know it is not manga or anime, but it has some familiar structure-traits similar to isekai, so I went here to ask it since it seemed appropriate.

Though in the third act Gloria, Sasha, and the Mattel board of directors all go to Barbieland, so it counts in that respect too.

Oh, and Aaron.

Has anyone read *Killer Shark in Another World*? I can't tell if all the swear words are just the translators going ham or if whoever wrote it was a sailor.

It doesn't feel "too Japanese" if that makes sense.

[up] For what I have read, the translators increase the swears by 2x-3x times the original, but the japanese version is also pretty liberal with the obscenities because it fits the b-movie parody thing the series is going for (they add more so its proportional how gratuitous it is). Mind you that is something I read when the series had a few chapters, so maybe things are a bit different now. If I'm wrong, anyone is welcome to correct my mistake.

[up] Ah. Still funny as hell though. I genuinely haven't laughed as hard reading a manga, let alone an isekai, in forever.

Also, I am inclined to believe the story itself is pretty good, all things considered. Characterization is solid, fun designs, and no harems in sight! (Well, after Same got to them anyway)

I think the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland count as isekai.

I'm amused that in non isekai fantasy manga, "this asshole was isekai'd" has become an antagonist archetype :'D I've only seen it couple times so far, but it kinda makes sense its becoming a thing (it also works for both over powered antagonists and the kinda pathetic entitled ones)
