I think a large part of what happens to Atlas and the things related to it (Mantle, the relic, and the Maiden) is dependent on if Ironwood makes a Heel–Face Turn. If he has a My God, What Have I Done? moment, realizing that he isn't a good person and I Did What I Had to Do isn't actually in effect, he might come around to the heroes' way of thinking just in time, possibly pulling a Redemption Equals Death. Just speculation on my part though.

After the whole Atlas thing is over... yeah, the heroes are gonna have a really hard time pulling everyone up. If Atlas falls and Amity falls with it, the rest of the world will take that as "well that's your problem" because Atlas displayed the same attitude towards them. If it doesn't fall, the rest of the world is still not going to be thinking about cooperation with the people who actively screwed them over. Either way, not particularly useful unity-wise.

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr

So, the point being mentioned that taking the Relic out would leave it more exposed, why would it need to be? Setting aside the whole debate of whether or not Salem can reach Atlas, why does Ironwood need to remove the Staff from the Vault to use it?

Right now it’s somehow keeping Atlas afloat even in another dimension, so all he has to do is open it, have it output more power to raise it, then close it.

[up]×3 Well, I still believe people are truly good at heart. Try some optimism, just like Ruby. It really makes life worth living.

[up]I tried that once. All it did was give me gas.

In seriousness, I am a huge fucking misanthrope and am fully convinced humanity is gonna die at the height of it's own stupidity. Optimism for me is nothing more than setting yourself up for a bigger fall.

[up] (4) I am a bit confused about that as well. The staff appears to have limitations.

In seriousness, I am a huge fucking misanthrope and am fully convinced humanity is gonna die at the height of it's own stupidity. Optimism for me is nothing more than setting yourself up for a bigger fall.

Nope, I'm with you on that. People do suck. A more sincere form of optimism to me is holding onto the belief that there are still good people out there worth meeting/good worth finding, but not believing that everyone is inherently good.

There's also of course the question as to what exactly they are supposed to do when their dust supply runs out.

And their food supply. And their water supply. And their air supply. And their ammo supply. And their sanity supply. Really just supplies in general.

Volume 7 - 16:26;

  • Ironwood: "if we harness the power of the staff and raise ourselves high into the atmosphere, the city's artificial climate will keep citizens and food supplies unharmed, always out of reach of whatever Salem throws our way."
    • I feel that if we were supposed to believe that food and water and air were a problem in Ozpin's Ironwood's plan, it would have been brought up already. We are talking about the most technologically advanced city in all of Remnant with a floating city and unlimited magical energy at its center in a world powered by magical pop rocks. There is a fair chance they have some manner of managing air, food, and water.
    • Ironwood and Winter both seem of the mind that ammo will not be a problem and that Grimm will not be a problem at a certain altitude. Supplies likely will be less of a problem. Sanity? When everybody finds out they had an immortal murder witch with a sky whale gunning for them, most of the people at the Schnee gala who weren't giving a crap about world affairs will probably be happy they were on the Ark when it launched.

[up][up][up] Oh shit son. Buckle up.

Thinking about it, Ironwood could easily deal with one major problem if he hadn't already given up. Watts is already in the Atlas network, have him turn the Heating Grid back on and that's a MAJOR threat that is dealt with. It would take him a single order and probably take Watts a few minutes at most, and one of the most serious issues facing the citizens would be dealt with. Evacuation isn't AS VITAL if the people don't have to worry about freezing to death.

It would also be a huge good faith measure that would re-open negotiations.

But obviously, that would require Ironwood to give a single shit about Mantle and its people. He's already decided they're dead and not worth even thinking about anymore.

(In terms of Vacuo, I'm of on the fence concerning whether Mantle abandonment would be a deal-breaker or no big deal. The people do have a Survival of the Fittest mentality, but at the same time one of those largest beefs and national traumas is how Atlas strip-mined their kingdom and then left them to die. I think the people of Vacuo would probably side more with the people of Mantle, since both are essentially scrappy survivors that have been forced to live in harsh conditions by Atlas.)

[up] I think most people are expressing concerns over resources because Mantle is where their Dust supply comes from. Even if they have an agricultural and water purifying system, their Climate system depends on the rarest form of Dust. Without Mantle, sooner or later their supply of Hard Light Dust is going to be exhausted. When that happened, the city depressurizes and is exposed to a high-altitude atmosphere.

I dont know how Ironwood expects Atlas to sustain itself, considering, y'know, he abandon all the poor to die while saving the elite. Who aren't inclined to work the fields to sustain his Fuck You Got Mine.

[up]The problem is that james just resolve one problem and enter into another with salem there, they all took the bait and Salem laid the situation pretty damn well, he cant wait for evacuationg mantle without running into the risk of letting salem doing more damange.

Salem is forcing james and RWBY into a trolley situation and watching both tearing apart about what do to.

So......Did some checking.....

That shot with Ren and them have the Backround showing a part of Atlas at what appears to be Dusk......wich looks like the shot of Cinder looking at Atlas when it also seems Dim.

It says she receives an Ultimatum.....

Are they leading to some Enemy Mine scenario?

I mean, i don't know what they would actually OFFER her it's just, a thought.

[up][up][up] Atlas probably has everyone but the absolute poorest of the kingdom living on it. We know from concept art and people working on the show that Atlas has farmland up there so they have to have people to handle all the related jobs for example.

most people are expressing concerns over resources because Mantle is where their Dust supply comes from.

Option 1: The Staff creates unlimited energy and allows a city to float. Dust becomes irrelevant.

Option 2 if The Staff is limited solely to keeping Atlas afloat and can't be harnessed that way: Atlas was hoarding/stopping all Dust trade. Atlas was the biggest exporter of Dust to the other Kingdoms and caused an economic upset when they stopped, didn't they? Fair chance they have enough stockpiled to remain up there for a long time.

Option 3 if they run out in the next few decades: send dropships down on scavenge missions to extract some Dust from the nearby mines. Scavenge

Even if they have an agricultural and water purifying system, their Climate system depends on the rarest form of Dust.

I can't find anything that says their climate system depends on hard-light Dust on the wiki, and even if it does run out, but they still have the option of scavenging more as time goes on.

The problem of starvation/exhaustion of resources will always be there, but it's still strategically preferable to a military leader to immediate death by giant demon whale.

I dont know how Ironwood expects Atlas to sustain itself, considering, y'know, he abandon all the poor to die while saving the elite. Who aren't inclined to work the fields to sustain his Fuck You Got Mine.

The thumbnail alone seems to suggest that this is the point Ren finally lets loose all his issues after bottling them up for so long, unable to keep doing so after faced with the fact that they lost Oscar.

And based on Yang's look of surprise compared to Ren's look of anger, it's likely seeing Ren like this is gonna catch her off guard, since even though he's been more agitated lately, she's never actually seen Ren when he actually gets angry. Only people who have ever seen that are Ruby, Jaune, Nora, and Oscar, so this will be a first for Yang, seeing the one who almost always has a level head flat out lose it.

Counterpoint: the poor people of Mantle did the maintenance on Atlas' robot army?

Pietro, sure, but he was a roboticist who headed a top secret project and likely not the only person responsible for weapons development. We're talking about a heavily militarized nation here.

America is a country with well-documented economic disparity. If the president decided to send New York into space to escape COVID and brought the US military with him, horrible as it is to say, they'd still have engineers up there while the rest of us died.

Its the bottom line who do the daily essential and thankless jobs for the top. Its why a lot of stories don't realize the importance of farmers on sustaining a society.

Even of they had a certain number of individuals who do perform those tasks on Atlas, there would be not enough manpower and they'd likely overwork the ones they have to death. Not to mention in a closed environment one bad crop yield can be massovely devastating and no means to trade with outsiders.

I think ren is going to blow off his issues to jaune, who so far have act kinda like team leader along with oscar, I think a this point he is sick of playing the optimistic game, since he like yang are the closer to james mentality.

[up]If that's the case, then maybe Yang's surprise is that she's actually seeing how she's been acting from the outside. Like she tries to tell Ren to knock it off and then Ren throws back in her face how she's been doing the same, and yet it's suddenly bad when he does it? It could actually be a Jerkass Realization for Yang, as she's forced to see just how she's been acting after witnessing Ren act the same.

I think the realistic problems of sending a giant city into orbit were negated when they first made the unrealistic suggestion of sending a giant city into orbit.

[up] I mean I'm not really drinking but, like, if I were, I'd still be here discussing an anime about teenage girls fighting monsters with you fine people, Devils-Advocating the positive sides of a character trying to abandon an entire city of people to their deaths. :p

It won't happen but its hilarious to think about

With the title its possible Ren will yell at Jaune that them losing Oscar was his fault cause he did the compromise and split up rather then them all being at Mantle.

[up]x4 Its the opposite, since he tends to dig in his heels the more he is challenged without actually considering the long term repercussions, the city flying off would poise to show the reality of trying to sustain itself in a pllace where it can't easily regain resources and every resource it currently has becomes invaluable, and any attempt to descend would be easily kept in check by Salem if she doesn't go up there and bring them down herself.

Edit: Also didnt originally read the comparison about the President leaving with the military to this situation is already pretty bad, because inclmpetence, arrogance, sheer human stupidity, and inability to sustain any of his businesses as the current president shows actually shows how fucked such a scheme would be, especially as there's no indication he'd save those soldiers families, and he has shit talked the military before.
