Salem demanded makeovers for the whole team, before they rolled up on Atlas.

Though I'm amused at the idea of Mercury with his zipper pants, which mean he could make them shorts if need be?

More Thoughts:

  • The sheer irony of Ironwood killing a long-time associate in cold blood with a weapon called "Due Process".
  • Winter's new look is clearly medical gear + Atlas combat armor. But it also feels very.....symbolic of how she's trapped and bound into the role of Ironwood's loyal right-hand woman. While her hair is in a loose ponytail instead of that tight bun, she's wearing gear that is essentially a harness and brace strapped to her body. As much as she told Weiss she's carving her own path, Winter is trapped in another cycle with a controlling father figure.
  • The Happy Huntresses are just running that entire show with ZERO logistics support or equipment. It's clear this has probably been their reality for a long time, but now having to do it without Robyn.
  • I love the contrast of the Ace-Ops in the two openings. In last volume's opening, we got Clover catching his badge before they all appeared. Now, we have him dropping it with them appearing along with Qrow. I'm curious about the focus on Harriet and Qrow, and what it will mean for them this volume.
  • Someone pointed out the parallels of Ruby falling in the opening to Salem's swan dives into the Pools.
  • OKAY I AM KINDA TERRIFIED what if this pattern repeats with Vacuo like is Theodore gonna fuck them over too??? A world tour of Ozpin's bad decisions?

Your yearly reminder that First Members viewing is a thing and people need to stop troping episodes that haven't been released to the general public.

Seriously, we've got people like Vsquared_42 coming out of the woodworks and doing exactly the same shit that I'm judging will get them suspended after enough offenses.

So much for Will Scarlatina then.

Will Scarlatina is a man; the Happy Huntresses are, well, Huntresses. The name "Will Scarlatina" definitely seems deliberate, but at the same time, none of the Happy Huntresses (except maybe Robyn) have names so on the nose. He probably does have some connection, though, and may well turn up this volume, but we're definitely going to be seeing a change to Winter, most of the Happy Huntresses really only share initials, and Winter's are W.S. It may even have been planned from the start.

[up] I am definitely curious about that, since I doubt they would drop a cameo of a dude with a Robin Hood-related name that is working on a top-secret project in Atlas for Ironwood.....and have him not show up.

The question is whether he's associated with Robin, Pietro, or doing something else. We know he's an Engineer, so might have gotten sent to work on Amity? wild mass guess

Twas the beard that made him evil! He was still good before he grew that Beard of Sorrow!

Don't believe me?! Read this excerpt from Fanfic/TheRWBYLoops where the ''true'' evil takes over!

    Pogonophobia
Ruby woke up and also Woke up, sitting against a wall and with a splitting headache, pinging and getting a number of responses, but, after briefly checking, realising it was a null Loop. Then she felt the long solid metal cuffs joining her wrists together and on her ankles, including power dampeners, and saw the jail cell bars around her, along with the rest of her Team, and the members of JNR in an adjacent cell.

“Anyone else Loopy in here?”, she checked.

“I think pretty much we all Woke up not long ago and are well Anchored”, Weiss responded.

“So, what happened?”, Yang asked, “My loop memories say it was a pretty normal run before we Woke up, right up to when we were working with the Ace Ops on missions.”

“Last thing I recall…we were in a hallway when the lights went off and ‘something’ knocked me out with one punch”, Jaune added from an adjacent cell, Nora behind him, desperately trying to bite through her restraints while Ren just sat, thinking.

“Maybe we got into a fight with the Ace Ops?”, Ruby offered.

“Not quite”, Vine answered calmly from nearby.

Team RWBY looked over at the cells opposite, where all the Ace Ops sat, similarly imprisoned, varying between looking completely miserable (Marrow and Clover) and furious (Harriet and Elm).

“To be caught unprepared like that. Argh!”, Elm recounted angrily.

“You think that’s bad? Shutters closed on the room we were in and then we got hit with knockout gas!”, Harriet snapped before coughing, “Didn’t even have the guts to face us head on”.

“Hacking? Sounds like Watts alright”, Ruby narrowed her eyes.

“Not me I’m afraid, although this is all rather amusing”.

Everyone looked at the cell next to the Ace Ops, where Watts was similarly imprisoned.

“Then, Cinder and Neo?”, Ruby posited.

“Do you intend to keep listing off names or are you going to bother checking your surroundings first?”, came the irritated answer, their eyes being drawn further along the corridor, to the cell where Cinder and Neo sat, similarly restrained.

“Maybe Ironwood became even more…concerned than he was and…now we’re here?”, Ruby smiled nervously.

“I’m afraid it’s even worse than that”, a new voice joined the conversation.

Everyone’s attention was drawn to the opposite end of the room, eliciting a combination of wide eyes and gasps. There were Winter and a clean-shaven Ironwood, also prisoners in a cell.

“The General’s beard gained sentience and took over Atlas in a military coup”, Winter continued, wearing a completely deadpan expression.

“WHAT?!”.

“That’s just crazy”.

“I knew it. Never trusted that facial hair”.

Everyone just sighed at the last remark by Nora.

“So. What about Penny? Oscar? Uncle Qrow? Maria?”, Ruby queried, “What happened to them?”

Ironwood sighed, “The last we heard, Penny and Oscar had fled to join Maria and Pietro. They met up with Qrow and Robyn before going underground to start a resistance movement. Not sure if any of them are Awake, but their unawake selves are still pretty formidable”.

“Ok. Well. That’s something. So…”, Ruby shifted a little, “These are even tougher than the standard issue restraints, but the cells…meh.”, she waggled her hand, “Oh. Unless they’re a variable and highly advanced secret project for holding high value prisoners?”

Winter and Ironwood nodded.

“Unfortunately, they’re designed such that there are no ‘locks’ within the cuffs or the cells.”, Winter explained, “When the power field is switched on, any cuffs whose remote-control chip is armed will automatically charge and lock in place. Only someone using a device with the pre-determined code can unlock them.

“The cells and the energy flowing through the bars work on a similar principle.”, Ironwood continued, “And the power circuits are buried too deep in the walls for us to reach them”.

“Yeah, yeah”, Ruby’s eyes glowed silver and started flashing rapidly in a complicated pattern as she looked at one of the wall-mounted sensors. A moment later, her cuffs fell off, earning shocked looks from the Ace Ops and Watts.

The Loopers on the other hand…all looked quizzical.

“What?”, she shrugged, “I may not be your typical thief, villain or stealth fighter, but it’s not like I haven’t used my flashlight eyes to pick electronic locks before”.

OKAY I AM KINDA TERRIFIED what if this pattern repeats with Vacuo like is Theodore gonna fuck them over too??? A world tour of Ozpin's bad decisions?

Theodore's portrayal in the novels was generally positive...Though if he does turn out to be another fuckup, I'm betting he'll be a Fearless Fool who throws caution to the wind and gets everyone under him killed by picking a fight he can't hope to win. As much as this is a Hope Punk story, there's a middle ground where you can say "maintaining hope is crucial, but not sufficient for victory, and is no substitute for careful planning and sensible tactics."

Someone pointed out the parallels of Ruby falling in the opening to Salem's swan dives into the Pools.

I noticed that immediately.

[up] So far both of the headmasters are a Foil to Oz where they've gone down a particular dark path that could have potentially befallen Ozpin.

Lionheart is who Oz would have become if he'd never mustered the courage to confront Salem about the increasingly brutal measures she was taking in "their" mission to unite humanity.

Ironwood is who Oz would have become if he'd given into the temptation to fight fire with fire and cast aside his own principles and humanity in pursuit of victory.

Theodore would if this theme continues be an Oz who took his optimism to the point of magical thinking and I Reject Your Reality, lead to the very sort of reckless waste of human life that Salem accuses him.

Am I the only one concerned that the current plan is to move all the survivors of Mantle into the crater beneath Atlas? The place directly beneath the city being held in place by the thing Salem wants?

I'm guessing that the end stretch of the Volume will have a frenzied battle by Salem to take the staff, while half our heroes try to stop her and the other half rush to evacuate the crater.

The thought occurred, but there seem to be cave systems there that run beneath Solitas for when they were digging the portion that would be Atlas out. Should Atlas fall, the main risk would be cave ins and earthquakes.

There's definitely concerns, yeah.

Joanna is correct that they need somewhere that is warmer and easier to defend, where they can gather people. The crater seems to be the closest thing that currently fulfills those requirements. But then we have the issue of whether or not Atlas stays in the sky or not. The one key point I think is very interesting is that the Staff can be removed from the Vault and taken elsewhere, without harming Atlas. It just.....can't be used or Atlas will fall.

This raises an interesting question: If it's used to create something, will it remain permanently or is the Staff's power strictly one thing at a time? So if Salem were to make a giant monster, would it vanish the instant someone else used the Staff? Where is the line drawn in Creation? Is the rule with Atlas simply because it's being used to power an unnatural state?

@Rebel

Obviously if Penny turns traitor they aren't just gonna spoil it in the OP, but there are plenty of hints in the Episode and the OP itself of that Direction happening....

Also I saw someone point out that Kid Cinder has bandages on one of her Wrists and as I saw when I looked at the Shot again one of her fingers.

They were likely temporary injuries as we don't see Scars there in the present day, but its a minor detail to help exemplify that she had it rough.

I see a lot of theorizing on how Penny is going to get hacked somewhere down the line (the opening supports the notion, and Ironwood has Watts in custody). Meanwhile, the episode teases the idea that Penny herself will do something ill-advised out of a misguided belief it will help the situation.

I wonder if we could have both. Have Penny hacked around the mid-season to provide a dramatic "mid-boss", then have Penny attempt her solo selfless heroism out of both the guilt for hurting her friends and the situation at hand.

I think the issue with ironwood is that it feel a sort of...easy way to single him as villian now? it feel pointless, as more a way to said "look me, im the bad guy now!" sort of way.

Does anyone think Cinder is going to use the Lamp? The intro shows that everyone is frozen except for Cinder, Emerald and Neo.

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015
#2598: Nov 8th 2020 at 11:40:40 AM

[up] I'm betting she will. Like, I have this whole theory, and so far things look good for that.

Edit: So I've been watching the intro carefully, and the blue-ish eye that turns red at the end? I'm pretty sure that's Penny's model, same eye shape and hairline. That seems to heavily hints at some kind of Face–Heel Turn on her part, either running back to Ironwood or giving the relic to Salem. The former would kind of break the story by launching one of the Plot Coupons into deep space, so I find it unlikely. The latter could either happen willingly in exchange for sparing Atlas/Mantle, or as a result of Watts tampering with her, though if he was capable of doing that why didn't he do it earlier; making Penny go on an actual killing spree instead of deepfaking one would have been much more effective in terms of sowing chaos in Atlas.

[up][up] There's the theory that Emerald will use the Lamp to tie her to Jinn a la Aladdin, and there's one obvious question she has on her mind.

[up] Which is what? "Does Cinder love me?" Maybe. But I could also see her asking "How can I help Cinder?" or something like that. CRWBY mentioned that Mercury was more likely than her to have a Heel–Face Turn, and my bet is that she'll act as a foil to Blake, where she's in a similarly abusive relationship but instead of getting out just doubles down on denial and continues making excuses for Cinder no matter what she does.
