So, I don't think we have a thread for MHA fanfiction yet (and if we do, it's long dead), so I figured I'd start one. Does anyone have any fics that they enjoy, or one's that they're working on?

I have a few ideas of my own, but when it comes to my favorites, I'd like to advertise the See It All In Bloom series of one-shots, the Dirty Little Secrets AU series, Yesterday Upon The Stair (which I have yet to finish, since it extends beyond what I've seen of canon so far), and a fanfic of Yesterday itself, U.A. Unsolved.

I’m working on a one-shot right now, but I can’t say for sure when it’ll be done.

I have found some good fics, but the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are on this site’s fanfic recommendations list already. I’d have to double-check what some of the others were.

Currently working on a Villain/Civilian focused fic, taking place in the MHA-verse version of Scandinavia.

Got a few chapters done, nothing put up yet. Still working on it.

Will be very much OC in terms of characters and setting.

[up][up][up]Number 1 Hero Deku fanboying over starstruck rookies is my new favorite thing and I thank you for bringing it to my attention.

[up][up] As far as mutual starstruck-ness goes, this MCU crossover oneshot has Midoriya and Peter Parker fanboying over each other and it's one of the cutest things I've seen in this fandom. (Despite the tags marking it as romantic, nothing really happens, so it's easy to ignore if that's not up your alley. I just liked seeing them interact.)

By the way, can anyone recommend some well-written fics that aren't some kind of AU? I've read some really fantastic canon-divergent and For Want Of A Nail -type AUs, (dis(associate) is one of my favorites so far), but AO3 in particular is really saturated with them, and I'd like a little variety. If anyone knows some good-quality canon-compliant fics, I'd love to hear about them. Preferably ones that don't put shipping front and center - I'm neutral at worst on most of the popular ships, but there aren't that many that I especially like.

Blue Drive Monsters is a very well-written fic that takes place in December, so at the time it started, it took place after any canon events (and also follows the manga, so manga spoilers). There might be a few dubious moments power-wise (could Uraraka beat Bakugo in a fight even if he didn’t use his Quirk? There has been a bit of debate over this), but nothing too bad, in my opinion.

I will say that this does explore a darker side of MHA’s society, though not in a way that derails anyone’s character, and there are quite a few shake-ups of the status quo. Deku also takes a backseat here, giving the fic a more ensemble cast, including a few original characters who I think fit pretty well into the world. And the League of Villains also features, in case you were wanted some of that.

You’re welcome!

You know, I enjoy A Us, particularly creative ones, but I will say that it can get a bit dull when each of them go through The Stations of the Canon without any major changes - you’re not going to see anyone die during the USJ arc, for example.

Not that I’d want anyone to, mind you, but I am curious if there are any stories where things go completely off the rails.

The writing is excellent, for one thing. The OCs are interesting and well-integrated into the fic, and their backstory is...well, it's a lot darker than what's typical for the series, but it still feels like the kind of thing that could conceivably happen in that setting. I especially like how it ties into certain canon plot points that haven't been expanded on yet.

Like you said, it focused a lot on the characters outside the main cast, and it did it well. The author did a good job with Tokoyami in particular - I think the author said they'd started out focusing on him and spread things out during the writing process. I can see that. I also appreciate the author's willingness to shake up the status quo in ways that don't happen very often. Specifically, having Bakugo expelled and sticking to it, but having it be a consequence of reckless behavior rather than...I dunno, taking his existing issues and blowing them out of proportion. It was done in a way that suited the story rather than feeling like retaliation against a character the author personally dislikes.

Speaking of which, props to the author for not taking the easy way out with Mineta. 90% of writers either write him out, kill him, or make him somehow even worse than he is in canon, after a while it starts to feel like a collective copout. Don't get me wrong, I don't like him any more than most fans do, but this author managed to make him tolerable as a side character. Mostly because the creep moments are less frequent and not played for humor, but still, that's saying something.

There are a few things I could gripe about (as far as his role in the plot goes, Koh feels a bit too much like Eri 2.0, even if there are other distinctions), but it's still one of the best fics I've read for this series. Looks like there'll be a part 2 at some point, so I'm looking forward to that.

Snippet.

The Name Game

There are many possible worlds where Midoriya Izuku was not born Quirkless. Many possible worlds where he never had to ask if a person like him could become a hero. Many possible worlds where he entered U. A. with his hero name picked years ago.

There are no possible worlds where the boy who answers to a schoolyard insult picked anything good.

For instance, the Izuku who inherited his mother's ability to attract objects to him. Unlike her, the budding hero had been practicing with his Quirk since he first developed it, pushing his limits to pull bigger and bigger things. That led him to here and now, an internship under one of the top heroes in the country, clinging to a wall with one hand while he pulled a black-cloaked villain closer with the other. The miscreant looked like she was about to strenuously object to Izuku's treatment of him, but by then she'd entered Wash's range and her opinions no longer mattered very much.

Izuku just sat back and watched what was too one-sided to really be called a fight, idly fiddling with the decorative vacuum cleaner head on his wrist. He might not be a full hero yet, but it felt good to know the day was saved with the help of hero trainee Suck.

There's also the Izuku who inherited his father's fire breath, who's found in a rather less dramatic setting.

“So here's what I've just never gotten,” said Sero, leaning back over one of the dorm couches. “I have tape powers. There is a limit to how cool I can make that sound. But Midoriya, you've got options with this fire breath thing, and you just kind of ignore them.”

“Come on,” Izuku protested. “What cooler name could I have?”

“Dragonbreath!” came the instant response of Sero, who'd already thought this through.

“But I don't have scales or anything.”

“Red Hot Chili Peppers!” Jiro piped up, pronouncing the English words almost perfectly.

“Didn't that guy have electricity powers in that anime?”

“Dread Maw of Gehenna,” said Tokoyami, doing his best to look like he was lurking in a shadowy cavern rather than a brightly-lit dorm.

“Erm, that's...look, I'm going for a different style, okay? Thank you all for your suggestions, but I've made my choice. I'm going to become the number one hero under the name Halitosis.”

Or the Izuku who inherited a combination of his parents' quirks, giving him the power to control, though not create, fire. Power over fire was one of the first things the average citizen would think of when it came to strong, flashy, and generally heroic Quirks, which was why he would soon discover that every name he liked had already been claimed. The list of monikers he'd thought of, and subsequently found he'd missed the boat on, included Pyro, Firestorm, Human Torch, Ra, Amon, Sunfire, Phoenix, Fever, Captain Kerosene, and Fire Lad. Even Fire, just the word Fire, had been scooped up by some heroine out in Brazil. Some people had wondered, over the years, why Endeavor chose a name that didn't reference his Quirk. Izuku was not one of those people.

It was during the training camp under the Wild Wild Pussycats that Izuku finally came up with something he liked and that, as a quick check using his phone's internet confirmed, nobody before him had liked first. It buyoed him the whole day. Sure, he'd been worked to the bone, villains were attacking, and his friend was in danger, but there was something deeply satisfying about knowing who he was.

Also deeply satisfying was finding that the villain he'd just run across had a fire Quirk of his own, since Izuku's pyrokinesis could easily neutralize him. Not that the villain himself seemed much concerned about this (Dabi had learned that existing as a disposable clone made a great many matters feel less pressing). All the scarred man said was, “Just my luck, it's whatsisface, my natural enemy.”

“Not whatsisface any more!” said Izuku, putting on a brave face as he tried to figure out what to do with this guy, who didn't seem inclined to surrender like a sensible person. “I've finally got a hero name nobody's used before! You've been captured by the hero trainee Dabi!”

Despite all the battles raging throughout the forest, there was a moment of profound silence.

“...Good name, kid,” said the other Dabi. Somehow he just didn't have it in his heart to break it to the boy.

So, I haven't really read any Villain!Deku fics, so I'm curious - how is he usually written?

Because a friend and I have...something like that planned. We hope to get it off the ground soon, so when we do, I'll try posting it here.

I wouldn’t know. The concept doesn’t interest me, so I’ve never read any fics like that.

Making him a scheming Chessmaster type who works with a team and mostly operates behind the scenes himself seems like the most obvious route to me, but I’m not sure if that’s what people usually do. It depends on what your premise is.

Well, we were going the Brainwashed and Crazy approach. Not sure how viable that would be in canon, considering how his encounter with Shinso went, but with the specific nature of this particular Quirk, combined with it playing off certain insecurities, we hope to differentiate the circumstances here.

Maybe we’re stretching things there, but that’s our premise, and it’s one we really like writing, so it’s going to have to be enough. At worst, it’ll be a Handwave in order to allow the good stuff to exist (or at least, what we hope will be good stuff).

As for his personality, we were going with the Chessmaster approach, but also rather unstable to boot. I was wondering if anyone had down a more violent villain!Deku, I suppose. There will also be some degree of Fighting from the Inside.

Ohhh, yeah that changes things. If he’s not doing it willingly, that gives you a lot more options. Especially if it’s not an AU, because then he’d still have OFA, and that’d make direct confrontations a lot more feasible.

It also means I might be interested in what you’re writing, depending on how it goes down. The thing that keeps me from the villain AUs is that I can’t picture him going that route willingly. I guess it depends on how much the AU diverges, but if it’s too close to canon otherwise, it just feels like too much of a stretch.

Wouldn't be surprised, yeah.

Anyway, does anyone know if there's a sort of list anywhere of how the various Class 1-A students address each other? Like, does Uraraka call Ashido "Ashido" or "Mina" - that sort of thing.

Alright, so I decided that now would be a good time to post the link to the fic my friend and I have written, as we've gotten some good headway on it. I give you, Devil's Drink!

To give a summary:

The pillars of Class 1-A have fallen to a corruption that has begun to sweep through the dorm, ensnaring each student, one by one. Soon, half the class is in its thrall, and the remaining students quickly find that there is no hope of escape. All Aizawa and the other teachers can do is search for the mastermind behind this plot, while within the dorms, a vicious battle erupts. And all the while, as their numbers start to dwindle, a question burns in each of the remaining students' minds: Can they still win, or will they too succumb...to the Devil's Drink?

As I alluded to previously, this is indeed a Villain!Class 1-A fic, although it's not an AU - rather, it's achieved through brainwashing. We also have tried to avoid simply making them all cackling villains - rather, we've tried to make it so that their villainous personalities stemmed from their actual ones, in as logical a manner as possible.

One thing I will say that has troubled me somewhat is the fight scenes, or rather, bringing them to the conclusion we desire. This can prove difficult when factoring in characters like Bakugo, but we always try to provide justifying circumstances to how things go the way they do.

In any case, this is still early on - some potential concerns that readers might have may be addressed as the story goes on. That said, any feedback and constructive criticism we get is appreciated! We only ask that you be kind - I think we're both a little nervous about how this will be received.
