This is the discussion/worldbuilding thread for the Hong Kong Warriors RP.

I've decided to break world-building into four parts.

    Feng Shui Sites
This is for listing the various Feng Shui sites that we've come up with. (Include name and effects/powers of the site.)
    Locations
This is for listing important locations that are not Feng Shui sites, i.e. where Triad H Qs are, where important police departments are, where schools are, etc.
    Triads
This is for listing what triads are operating and (optionally) what areas they control. Most of them will probably be situated somewhere in Kowloon City. (Since Triads were especially rampant during the 1970s, I feel that they should get a folder of their own.)
    Other
This is for listing things that don't go into the other categories, such as NP Cs, other organizations, things tied to your characters, etc.

Red Flower Restaurant

This is a mildly powerful Feng Shui site owned by Ying Wu's family. It has a "homey" atmosphere. Any business conducted on the grounds of this Feng Shui site will always guarantee a steady trickle of money as long as you own the building.

So, how does Feng Shui work, exactly? I know a bit about Taoism, yin-yang and all that, but not so much about Feng Shui. It does remind me of Ley Lines tho.

Matt's Book

Despite basically granting everything powers, Matt's book is extremely moody and is a bit of an asshole. Most of the time, the spells it provides Matt with are varying levels of useless and/or weird. He's taken to trying to memorize them and write them down, but so far the only one it's let him write down is a spell that allows you to change alcohol to hallucinogenic caffeine (yes, really).

It also has a tendency to come up with the more powerful spells when he doesn't really need them or they would be utter overkill (it once gave him a spell for causing nuclear explosions when he wanted to get rid of an ant infestation) and come up with the most utterly useless and weird spells when he is in the most dire need, leaving him to his own devices.

Umm... so, I was here, I guess. If I wasn't, someone hacked my account. So, yeah.

Feng Shui Sites (An Explanation)

Feng Shui can be interpreted as Ley Lines.

It's basically the concentration of good or bad "qi" in an area based on the placement of the building, the view that can be seen, if someone died horribly in the building (obviously bad), and if ancestors are buried under the place (apparently this can gather wealth).

So...Feng Shui = The atmosphere of the place based on what's there/has happened.

If it's a place like Red Flower Restaurant, which has been owned for several generations and has a lot of good memories, then it can develop a slight amount of good Feng Shui.

The most common Feng Shui sites in order of power (in this setting) are restaurants (and other food establishments), houses which have been owned by a single family for many generations, houses with a good view, and "lucky" geographical formations, etc.

The more "natural" it is, the better.

Meanwhile, someone can sabotage good Feng Shui by blocking the view or destroying geographical formations. They might point something sharp towards your dwelling/business place.

[up][up] Sticking something sharp towards you is basically hoping that you get more "thorns in your side." Also, people don't like it when sharp things are pointed at them, as it makes them feel uncomfortable. Previously, this was just superstition, but now this is an actual way to make people in a business/dwelling become violently ill or depressed.

Triads: Major Players

  • The Axe Gang: This is by far the largest Triad in Kowloon City. They mostly deal in extortion and providing hired help, and are known for their underground brawling rings, although they have started branching out. While other gangs use more improvised weapons such as crowbars, cleavers, etc. to fight, all members of this gang use axes, hence the name.

    • Their leader just died recently via a very nasty case of seafood poisoning, leaving everyone in the gang eyeing his seat and other gangs eyeing their territory. This could lead to a rash of scheming and street brawls, whichever comes first.

  • The Red Clouds: This is the second largest Triad in Kowloon City, who mostly deal in drugs and racketeering. Lots and lots of it. They own a majority of the drug dens in the city and everyone knows that you do business with them at your own risk. They are currently in an odd partnership with the Black Door Syndicate.

  • The Black Door Syndicate: This is the third largest Triad in Kowloon City, their territory a tiny bit smaller than the Red Clouds. They mostly deal in gambling dens and are pulling the strings of the more reputable casinos.

    • They trust the Red Clouds, for the most part, because with such a small difference in power, fighting would be ill-advised and would almost assuredly lead to Mutually Assured Destruction.

    • Both are eyeing The Axe Gang's territory covetously, and with the new rise of Feng Shui sites, it'll be a mad scramble for supposedly "lucky" places...

How about a list of HK places that might attact these gangs (for their Feng Shui?) Also one of creatures or sorcerers that might be interesting too (hopping vampires maybe?)

Haven't decided yet if I want to join in, considering I'm on a hiatus from another RP here just to give myself pace since I got back from Canada to take care of personal stuff.

Notable Feng Shui Sites

  • Turtle Shell Mountain: This is a mountain shaped, unsurprisingly, like a turtle shell and covered with forests. It's a very powerful Feng Shui site capable of repelling the bad luck of the owner. It is currently a public park.

    • There is a natural formation of rocks shaped like a turtle in the middle of this mountain. Some mystics swear that if the turtle were to ever reach the top of the mountain, all of Hong Hong would sink back into the ocean. They also swear that the turtle is climbing the mountain, gaining a few inches every year. Someone put a stone tablet on top of the turtle's shell to weigh it down and prevent this from happening. The whole thing just sits there, unguarded. One can only hope that nobody helps the turtle to the top.

  • Eagle Beak Mountain: This is a mountain that has a sharp peak with wildflowers growing on it. This is a Feng Shui site with the same amount of power as Turtle Shell Mountain, and it is capable of causing bad luck to the owner's enemies. This is also a public park.

    • Turtle Shell and Eagle Beak Mountain's effects naturally oppose each other. If two parties are in possession of one of these Feng Shui sites each, the situation will quickly become a stalemate.

  • An Family Estate: This is an estate owned by the prestigious An family, who have lived there for ages. It is a medium-powered Feng Shui site, providing general protection from ill effects and a smooth domestic life to the inhabitants (making it a good safe-house).

    • An family members that have died are buried in the crypt underneath the house. Their spirits contribute to the estate's effects and make it almost impossible for anyone without the surname An to live in the house by kicking up a racket. If someone were to remove all the bodies in the crypt and bury them elsewhere, some of the power of the estate would be lost, but it would be rendered useable by the "general public."

  • Hao Ping Park: This is a much-loved public park, despite being mostly a plain with a hiking trail and benches. Over the years, it's managed to become a moderately powerful Feng Shui site with the power to repel general issues and illnesses.

  • Lang Dong Cemetery: This is an arguably haunted cemetery where its inhabitants do not want to be bothered, and will stick to passers-by to cause further trouble in their homes. To make things even worse, it is often frequented by careless mystics who want an undead servant or two, which then are dumped outside when they're no longer of use, causing many jiang-shi to roam the streets in some parts of Hong Kong.

    • This place's power is on par with Turtle Shell Mountain and Eagle Beak Mountain, possibly due to all the negative emotions concentrated there—it's a burial site for convicts. Thankfully, it only becomes actively malevolent at night. At daytime, it's "merely" a creepy and oppressive place.

Ancient Magic and its Effects on Hong Kong

  • The first thing people noticed when the old magics reappeared was that geography got severely mangled. New landmarks appeared while others disappeared. And then some old landmarks reappeared and some new ones relocated somewhere else. The city layout had become fluid.

  • The second thing people noticed was that distance and time warped continuously. One might take an hour to walk to the end of the street but complete a marathon in half an hour. It might be day in one part of the city while it was night in another. You couldn't trust your watch or your mind anymore.

  • Perhaps the strangest thing about this was that natives weren't affected by this at all. They have the ability to get to the right places exactly when they mean to arrive, as if by instinct. New arrivals got disoriented at first but quickly learned how to find their way around in a few days to a week.

The Rules of Wolfang / Matsuno Kyonori

1) No using the more powerful or deadly Power Words unless fulfilling a certain kind of wish or if someone wishes to harm Wolfang.

2) One Power Word cannot be used while another is still in effect. Basically, if he strikes you with a sickness, that sickness makes you immune to any other warping he may do. The exception is if you then make a wish to him - this revokes that protection.

3) Wishes can be fulfilled in as literal a fashion as preferred.

4) Wolfang himself cannot fully engage in combat unless all active agents of his are defeated.

Royal Hong Kong Police Headquarters:

Located at 1 Arsenal Street, Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island, it was known as Caine House since it was named after William Caine, who served as the Colonial Secretary and Acting Governor of the colony. The building was created in 1952 to replace the Central Police Station, which was relegated for officers assigned the beat in the Central District. Most of the units, except for the Airport Security Unit, the Police Tactical Unit and the Special Duties Unit, were based there.

Royal Hong Kong Police Special Branch:

In the face of a perceived direct Communist threat to Hong Kong, an Anti-Communist Squad was established in the Criminal Investigation Department of the then Hong Kong Police by 1930. It was named the Political Department in Chinese (政治部). In 1933, the squad's English name became "Special Branch" while its Chinese name remained unchanged. In addition to anti-subversion operations, its role during its first two decades also included immigration, passport control and registration of persons.

By 1949, then an elite division of the Criminal Investigation Division, Special Branch was manned by a large cohort of British officers brought in that year by Deputy Commissioner Peter Erwin, the Director Special Branch (DSB), to replace remnants of the prewar Shanghai Settlements police. Under DSB John Prendergast (later Sir John), appointed Deputy Commissioner in 1960 to lead the division, Special Branch was considered a highly professional security apparatus, pursuing anti-corruption and anti-Triad duties in addition to intelligence and counter-subversion operations. By 1977, the branch strength had reached almost a thousand.

SB officers assigned to work in Hong Kong were encounraged to work alongside MI 6 agents in penetrating mainland China due to a lack of intelligence success with their Far East Controller.

Hong Kong's City God

Because of the resurgence of magic, Hong Kong's City God has awoken yet again. He's trying to sort the crime and supernatural weirdness situation out as quickly as possible, but isn't having much luck. His hands are very full right now, and he's trying to help his citizens as much as he can.

Currently, he's very weak due to the crime and whatnot "infecting" Hong Kong, so his actions are limited to small miracles and appearances. He has his host of spirit-servants and the other gods in his court take care of bigger things for him.

He appears as a kindly middle-aged man of Asian descent dressed in simple modern clothes, albeit of a very high quality. When pretending to be a human, his name is literally "Hong Kong."

More Feng Shui Sites

  • Sai Mei Hospital: This is a large hospital complex with a moderate healing aura. Wounds heal faster and sicknesses are easier to fight off, making many patients feel at ease here. Staying on the grounds for a few days gives one a shield against minor curses. It's currently public property.

  • Mouse Street: This is a street in Kowloon City, mainly used as a base for drug smuggling. Illegal activities are less likely to be discovered on this street, making its ownership severely contested by gangs.

  • Mo Dai Bank(s): These are the many banks in the Mo Dai bank franchise. These locations have the ability to attract wealth and multiply it considerably, and are currently owned by Mo Dai Bank Co.

  • Mystic Home(s): These are the homes owned by mystics for a long enough period of time. These homes have gradually gained the ability to attract supernatural beings and phenomena, and also grant a small amount of good fortune to whomever owns them. However, the second only applies to the mystic owning the house.
    • If the house is taken by force, then bad fortune will start following the owner around and the house will start attracting malicious supernatural beings and phenomena. You can't expect everybody to know this, though.
