AlternateContinuity as AlternateUniverse vs AlternateContinuity as separate work - which do you prefer, and why?

Looking at the Tenchi Muyo! (which I might be getting interested in watching soon!) page it says for Alternate Continuity:

Is this one of the rare examples of an Alternate Continuity being an Alternate Universe, as discussed in this post.

However, aren't many examples of Alternate Continuity "a work occupying a distinct and irreconcilable timeline", such as the relationship between DC Extended Universe and Arrowverse.

I added this to Alternate Continuity but is it correct?:

This is different from an Alternate Universe in that outside of crossovers and What If?? scenarios, they generally don't interact with the "main" universe. However, in some circumstances an Alternate Continuity can become an Alternate Universe if the characters crossover.

Which approach do you prefer and why? What are the pros and cons for an Alternate Continuity being or becoming an Alternate Universe, and an Alternate Continuity being its own separate universe containing the same characters?

This is the forum for discussing about tropes so I assume this is kosher on here.
