Regarding the fusilier's uniform, since a lot of people have had this in their signups:

An idea that OG and I have been throwing around is that until recently there wasn't a set uniform, just a badge you wear on your person, sheriff-style. However, Satsuki has been pushing for one for a while, and now a combination of a growing textile industry and a few dozen crates of military surplus that fell off the back of a multiversal truck means she finally has the means to put this into action.

Right now, her staff, the generals and their staff, and some selected inner and outer city units are getting uniforms for field trials. Thoughts? I'm thinking the uniform would be some sort of sturdy trench-coat-style affair, but that's not set in stone or anything.

[up] You know what I think: yes, yes, yes.

Here are some bits that have been talked about on the Discord:

    open/close all folders

     The News on Balder
  • Radio
    • This technology isn't just in its infancy, it's barely out of the crib. The pet project of local 'entrepreneur' Jael, a man who got rich by selling his father's secretive luck potion, he plans to become the first master of Balder's (still non-existent) press. As a result, he owns not only the small radio tower that has just been erected at the beginning of the year (it's located on the northeast corner of the city center) but also every radio receptor (which he has 'gracefully gifted' to the administrative buildings, along with pubs and other public places. When he isn't broadcasting live music, Jael is working on what he believes will be his greatest victory: a series of on-the-air lectures meant for those who can't go or haven't gone to school. He's been venturing more and more into the outskirts in the hopes of selling at least one radio receptor, even though the signal isn't that good.
  • Bulletin Boards
    • Malon arrived at Balder in its third wave. Hailing from a land of demon supremacy, she used her magical abilities to help the lesser races and assisted in the construction of the outer wall. During this time, she ingrained herself within the community of the western quadrant, and enjoyed her position as a respected scholar, studying the arts of making potions out of the god's remains.
    • However, with the establishment of one of the outskirts' biggest schools near her house, her usual commute back and from home was soon populated with people calling her 'a mutated freak', along all other kinds of nice little insults. Her tipping point was when she was attacked by a group of thanatologists who believed her potion making was bringing the god back to life. Annoyed (and with a broken leg), Malon moved into the city center and swore off ever interacting with the common folk of the outskirts...
    • ... except as the anonymous person behind the establishment of several bulletin boards all over the outskirts, paying for the creation of general information pamphlets keeping the people updated about the goings on of their city. Though she publicly claims she'll never return to the outskirts, a part of her feels this is the only way to pay back the debt to the people who openly welcomed her when she arrived in Balder.

     Religious Leaders
  • Thanatologists
    • Anh is the leader of the Thanatologists. Born to two farmers living near the Northern Gate, as a child, Anh would constantly travel into the Naked Wilds and befriend a pack of Hainas that lived on a small hill near his home. One day, he was attacked by a feral Pincae, who slashed his chest and sent him rolling down the hill, into a miles-deep hole. His family presumed him dead, but Anh had survived the fall, albeit with a broken bone on almost every part of his body. He laid there and cried his eyes out for what seemed like hours, until falling unconscious due to exhaustion.
    • Later in life, Ahn said that for the next few hours, he saw himself in an otherworldly dimension, the world inside the corpse. He frolicked around with the spirits of animals, and was wrapped in the warm embrace of the god's own nerves, which healed him up with delightful bursts of red electricity. It was then, he also later said, that he knew the god's death had brought into the world a symbiotic being of pure good. A day later, Anh was found healed up, but his body was now covered in dark red tattoos.
    • Sporting uncharacteristic wisdom, Ahn began writing and meditating, along with adopting a diet based only on the fauna spawned directly from the god's body. His first book, Life from Death, was more of a collection of thirty pages with flowery writings on how they were all being kept alive by the god's death. Though it didn't make much of a blip, the fact that a fourteen year old had written some interesting and complex thoughts attracted the attention of several scholars. Unwittingly, these became Ahn's first followers, as he routinely took them into the Naked Wilds to consume some of the god's dead nerves and experience trips into the otherworldly dimension Ahn had described.
    • Now, Ahn is twenty eight, and has thousands of followers who pay to receive his writings every week. With his gains, he demolished his parents' house (luckily they died years before) and built a small and humble hut, surrounded by farmland and similar huts occupied by his followers. The Thanatologists can be often seen wearing no footwear, combinations of purple and blue (purple representing the sky and blue the god's dead body), with Ahn and his closest followers wearing orange sashes describing their sanctity. The area around Ahn's hut has become a bit of a secluded community, with visitors being forced to remove their footwear to experience 'true connection with death and life itself'.
    • Ahn is known to have a partner, a former Fusilier who began working as a private guard for the Thanatologists' frequent trips into the Naked Wilds. Eventually, the two fell in love, and his partner became a fervent follower of Thanatology as well. It's a well-known rumor that the two are looking for 'the perfect female, an embodiment of the life and death of Balder' to be the surrogate mother of their child.
  • Purists
    • Tianchi is a Purist priestess. She is the daughter of the man who founded the Purists, a blacksmith who said he once had a vision of the god Balder returning and destroying all that was created upon him. Believing her father to be mad, Tianchi followed him out of obligation as he abandoned his profession and forced her to turn her potion-making hobby into their only source of income. Every day, she would watch her father grovel at the market, begging the other citizens to see the truth. Shame would fill her heart as she labored day and night to bring food to their table.
    • After working for three days and three nights, Tianchi began hearing voices. A soothing male voice called her to the Northern Gate. There, she saw a cloaked being bathed in dark light, waiting just outside the Gate. Thinking it to be a vision born out of exhaustion, Tianchi decided to rest. But the voices continued, and the cloaked being remained there, just outside of her reach (thanks to the Fusiliers staffing the Gate who forbade her from leaving). With every night, the voice would grow stronger and stronger. Seeking some form of help, Tianchi confided within her father about the voices. He claimed it was Balder, heralding his return, and that she should go to the cloaked being.
    • Tianchi and her father headed to the Gate that night, and she saw the cloaked being there, waiting for her. Even with her father egging her on, Tianchi was too scared. Seeing this, her father decided to attack one of the Fusiliers defending the gate, giving her the chance to leave. She thought he would merely try and punch one of them, but instead, her father blindly jumped onto the spear of one of the Fusiliers, killing himself. Distraught, Tianchi escaped through the Gate, and towards the cloaked being, who led her deeper and deeper into the Naked Wilds.
    • She ran for what seemed like days, the cloaked being always motioning for her to keep following him. Yet, despite the passage of time, she never grew tired. Eventually, the two of them reached a truly empty field, with nothing but dirt surrounding them for miles and miles. Here, the cloaked being waved its hand, and a tree sprouted out from the ground. He told her to wait and eat of its fruit, that it would show her the light. And so she waited, but the tree refused to bear any fruit. Tianchi kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting. She built a small hut near the tree, watered it every day, prayed to it, waited and waited. She waited a full year. Finally, the tree bore a small, purple fruit filled with a strange, thick juice. She devoured it in an instant.
    • Tianchi's vision was filled with nothing but stars. There, she saw a vision of the future, of the city growing bigger and bigger, spreading its reach across the stars, and then of a vengeful Balder re-awakening and destroying all of them- even her- with nothing but a mere swat of its hand. This vision shocked an already convinced Tianchi, who took the fruit's seeds back to the city, where she was received with surprise, as many thought that she had died in the Naked Wilds.
    • Using her potion-making skills, Tianchi started producing as much of the juice as possible. She also started making daily appearances near the bulletin board, promoting the word of her father's belief. Those who stopped to listen to her would be taken to her house, where she would give them the juice, and they would witness the same vision as her. Then, they would pray for hours, until they all declared their dedication to the Purist cause. With each passing day, her numbers rose and rose, but she could no longer produce the mystical fruit. However, she found that it was no longer needed, as her words had been "laced with the power of the fruit and the truth of its vision" (according to her).
    • Every day, Tianchi prays to the god Balder in the public square by Verdant Creek. She and her most fervent followers live in a complex not too far from there, where they pray and discuss Balder's upcoming return, though some have begun theorizing that his return does not herald the destruction of the world.

So are there no objections to the Fusiliers claiming the Dark Place at the start of the RP?

Doesn't look like Chabal's character would have a reason to call dibs. Not in my eyes, anyway. ^_^;

Um. Hi.

I saw that OCs are allowed, and I thought that was interesting, so what are the rules for that?

Heya, Star! The idea is generally that OCs are meant to fit into the life of the City, whether as immigrants or the children of previous immigrants, but apart from that I think anything goes? You should probably wait for Strat, though, as he's the GM.

[up][up] OCs are allowed as long as you make a pretty good sheet and have them be more than just incidentally related to the City (basically, give me something meaty, don't just take your previously created OC, and tack on a 'oh they're now in the city' part at the end. Or do, if it's really good I won't mind).

So they can’t be part of the current wave?

And can they be from an existing canon (but in an unrelated situation to the canon characters, like basically a background character)

They can! And yes.

Here's the roleplay thread. We'll be moving at a slower pace, so if you're interested in joining, don't feel like you need to sign up as quickly as possible.

An idea for some megafauna.

The Caeossi - A large beast roughly 5 meters tall and 10 meters long, it has four upper limbs that acts as both arms and legs but no lower limbs, leading to having a very long tail. However, it has a rather strange afflictment.

The Caeossi were born small creatures in the veins of the god. However, they grew quickly, and eventually they evolved powerful arms and became burrowing creatures, if rather large ones. However, at the same time, a strange, funguslike plant began growing on the sides of the god's veins. At first, the babies, who are laid in the vein still, attempted to eat this plant. This turned out lethal, as they attempted to continue growing while inside their stomach, proving too durable for their stomach acid.

However, eventually one of the fungiplants managed to get on the skin of a young Caeossi. They eventually started growing on the skin. This is where it was discovered that the durability of the plant allowed for an extra layer of protection, and the other Caeossi, even with their rudimentary (but admittedly clever) intelligence, picked up on this. The older ones draped blankets of the plant over their children. It was only after about a generation of Caeossi that a strange mutation began taking the plants; as they grew older, they grew more transparent.

This still didn't affect much until the plant started meshing so aggressively with the Caeossi it ate away and replaced the skin in certain individuals, thus negating its durability, and its transparency allowed one to see the muscles of the adult Caeossi. While many of them still live with merely a coat of the plant, some of them live with the plant eating away at their skin, leaving them more vulnerable and slightly transparent. The adult Caeossi still drape the plant over their younglings, as their primitive minds haven't made the connection that it makes them weaker just yet. Some say that their rapid evolution from small subterranean creatures to large predators is a sign that the god's malevolent will carries on and aids the creatures. As such, besides their obvious danger of being a 5 meter tall reptilian with needle teeth and four arms, they are considered omens of bad events (like, say, your ass about to get grassed by a 5 meter tall reptilian).

Here are some new bits that have been talked about in the Discord:

  • The Santa Barbara (suggested by Little Mako)
    • The very first starship the people of Balder ever procured (in late 19 AB). With an an illustrious career serving in one interstellar war, two inter-system wars and two "trade disputes", the cries of joy it's acquisition caused among the city's inhabitants sounded something like "it's a piece of junk!"- I mean, just look at it.
    • Despite this, the Santa Barbara actually served Balder admirably for the next 10 years, running numerous exploration missions with limited maintenance thanks to the ludicrous degree of redundancy built into its design. Eventually, however, better ships were aquired, and the old junker 's spaceframe became too beat up to run.
    • In 30 AB, the Balder government ordered the ship dismantled, and its components were used for other purposes. Its power generator was moved to a nearby blood-well and now forms the core of a water purification plant, and its computer mainframe sits nestled deep underneath the capitol building, repurposed to help run the burgeoning administration.
    • The empty shell of its fuselage now sits in a small memorial plot called Santa Barbara Park, a popular children's play area.
  • The planet has a ring system of blood crystals around it, the result of an arterial spray during the fight.
  • Added the Caeossi to the fauna list.

  • Who are the kids in Asriel's orphanage?
    • Jon Steely: One of the older orphans at 16, Jon is one of the more quiet ones, having seeing both his parents and his sister get killed by some Pseudosentias at a young age. The one time he has been vocal in public was yelling at Toph when she made the mistake of being rude to him in front of the orphans.
    • Steven Greene: 9 years old and very one of the more vocal kids, he likes to wear a cape and likes to look up to the original warriors like superheros. His favorite being Jengbish, but Asriel comes a close second. Likely a future member of the the Long Knives.
    • Linda and Wanda: 10 year old identical twins who are never seen without the other. They have a tendency to talk at the same time in a neutral monotone. They tend to creep everyone, but Asriel knows that they mean well. May or may not have psychic powers.
    • Lora Max: 13 years old and someone who came to Balder with her parents, but was disowned by them. See, in her old world there are people who are born with powers and are hated by others for it. As it turns out, she is one of those people, having the ability to make a force field to protect herself. Despite some encouraging from Asriel, she hates using her power as she thinks that no one will ever adopt her if they know she is a mutant.
    • J'ozz Nex'on: Called John by his friends, he is a 7 year old lizard man who originally came from Mizage with his family. After losing them in a tragedy (looking at you, Noel Vermillion) he is now living in the orphanage.
    • Leni Jarvis: The youngest at 8 months, she is almost never seen outside someones arms. Likes to pull on Asriel's ears.
    • Cindy Meltzer: One of the newcomers, this 10 year old girl was kidnapped, made into something inhuman, see her dad get killed, made human by her father's killer, then taken to Balder. Nowadays she lives in Asriel's orphanage, but she has nightmares, one where she is underwater, drinking the blood of "angels".

New Non-Playable Characters:

  • Idias and Ibykos:
    • Idias and Ibykos are twin original warriors hailing from an unknown nation-state in the year 2004. Though their planet resembles Earth, its main point of divergence happened around the 17th century, when the actions of explorers infringed upon the resting ground of ancient creatures that had been living in the planet centuries before humanity. This plague was unleashed upon their world and severely changed its landscape and power structure, not only because the creatures quickly made short work of the explorers and the populations they sought out to explore, but because their main form of sustenance was electricity, characteristics which hindered their planet's technological development.
    • That being said, do not mistake them for savages, as the monsters also unlocked a new path for humanity: by 2004, psionic powers are commonplace and come in many varieties. It is not uncommon, for example, for your next-door neighboor to achieve adulthood and transcend their own mortal coil, becoming an ethereal being of pure thought. Idias and Ibykos themselves have two different sets of powers: she was born without her arms and can perform telekinesis, telepathy, amongst others, whilst he could project his own soul and possess other beings.
    • Idias and Ibykos were born in a nation-state famous for being conquered seventeen times in the past two centuries. A true melting pot of culture and crime, their parents were completely in debt to a local mob boss, and as such sold their children into slavery. From a young age, Idias and Ibykos knew nothing but servitude: Idias herself did not start talking until she was six as speaking out of turn would lead to severe punishment, though she had full control of her telepathy by then. Ibykos protected his sister, often taking on her workload, whilst Idias was relegated to menial burecrautic tasks which she performed with her powers. This, however, gave her time to read, and she would often regale her brother with tales of moral paladins and genius strategists- he gained idols, and she gained a broader understanding of the world they lived in.
    • Though both of them lived a life of strife, they had each other, and displayed a bond unlike anything the mob boss had ever seen. When their twelfth birthday rolled around, the mob boss enlisted Ibykos to become one of his enforcers, whilst Idias would remain in her current position just in case he got too cocky. Ibykos followed the rules, fearing for his sister's safety, until one night when the mob boss assigned him his first execution. Apalled by this concept, Ibykos rejected the order... a line had to be drawn at some point, he reasoned. The mob boss threatened his own life, but Ibykos did not care. It was only once he mentioned adding his sister to his 'personal collection' that Ibykos realized the line couldn't just be drawn, it had to be enforced. The following morning, the mob boss was found dead by ingestion of live explosives. Idias and Ibykos were nowhere to be found, and a massive reward was offered to whoever brought their heads back to the second-in-command.
    • For the next years, the two ran a nomadic lifestyle. With some money they stole from the mob boss, they managed to buy new clothes, a cart, some weapons, and the two quickly got to work on training each other. Much to his own surprise, Ibykos found that when it came to anything but close-quarters combat, he wasn't exactly the best. But Idias was a whole 'nother story: the combination of the years of knowledge she had amassed with a predisposition towards employing creative solutions and figuring out how to substitute her hands with her other limbs turned her into an able fighter. Many times the two were captured and their powers temporarily disabled, only for Idias to quietly free them, leaving nothing but slit throats behind her. It was here that Idias began to turn into a different person: colder, quieter, stronger, yes, but different.
    • It wasn't long before Idias became a well-known mercenary throughout the criminal underworld of the continent's outskirts, with Ibykos acting as her bodyguard and occasional conscience. Though Idias treated her brother with respect and always considered his suggestions, she was never above the act of killing. Much to her surprise, this made her brother dip into despair, fearing for his sister's life, until one night when he returned from the local village with a smile on his face and a book under his arm, speaking of Gods and eternal souls. Idias heard him, but she never listened to him, even as he began to pray more and more, becoming the paladins from the stories he loved and idolized.
    • Days before their fifteenth birthday, the twins awoke in a strange new world, having been forcibly brought onto a quest to save the multiverse. Idias saw this as a chance to learn, to meet others like her, and her cold demeanor began to slowly melt. Ibykos saw this as an opportunity to assure that his and his sister's souls would live on forever with the Gods. It was no surprise that, when the time came for one final foray into the god Balder's head, Ibykos offered to go, leaving his sister for the first time in her entire life with nothing but a kiss on the forehead and a promise that Heaven would be theirs, for sure.
    • When her brother didn't return despite Balder's death, Idias didn't speak for seven days. Once she was done, whatever joy and friendliness left within her was immediately replaced by a single objective: to improve her abilities so that, one day, she could stop death itself. Though there was worry for her fellow warriors- and eventually other citizens- there was no desire to help. There was only an immortal hatred for death itself.
    • There's a reason why the Northern Quadrant is the safest, and it's not just because it's the farthest away from the most dangerous parts of the Naked Wilds: General Idias is one of Balder's smartest leaders, known for her precise commands and excellent control of resources. Follow her, and you will become stronger than you could ever imagine. Stand in her way, and you will pay.

  • Begonia & Zatz
    • There's a market in Balder, one the higher ups don't want to acknowledge, and that's the market for people who don't want to ask the Fusiliers for help. For whatever reason, they don't think the big uniformed men who have to write reports and answer to their Generals can solve their problems. Sometimes, they don't want the big uniformed men even knowing about their problems. For situations like those, you go after for-hire mercenaries... you go after Begonia & Zatz.
    • Begonia is a Balder native, born to a couple who were brought onto the planet during the first wave. She was a curious little tyke, always trying to go on adventures, always making the adults around her freak the fuck out whenever she disappeared for an afternoon. Sometimes she'd come back with a new pet or two. And then there was the one time she came back without an arm and a smile on her face. Her parents soon found out that something happened during Begonia's gestation, and for some weird reason, she can't feel any physical pain.
    • Terrified of what this could mean for the life of their daughter, Begonia's parents tried to keep her inside at all times and teach her to be afraid of the outside world. But Begonia had gotten a taste of adventure, and she wanted more. With each passing year, Begonia found more and more ways of sneaking out of the house. She formed Balder's first youth gang. She used to shoot at monsters from afar with the original Fusiliers. When she came of age, she armed herself to the bone and got ready to defend her city from the Pseudosentia. She came back without a leg and plenty of stories to tell.
    • By now, her parents had wore themselves thin worrying for their daughter. Still, she was eighteen, and there was no way around it: Begonia had an undying desire to see the world, and no amount of fear-mongering would stop that. Fearing their daughter would certainly die without an arm and a leg, her father presented Begonia with one last gift before she left the house for good: a mechanical arm, a mechanical leg, and instructions to update and maintain both of them. On their last night together, her parents reminded Begonia that she would always have a place in their home. It was a tearful goodbye- despite years of resenting her mom and dad for trying to keep her inside, even Begonia couldn't stop herself from crying at the thought of saying farewell.
    • Still, the journey was not yet complete. Begonia soon joined the Fusiliers, and remained there for around seven years, serving under General Jengbish. She was quite a soldier, even losing one eye in a mission that saved five of her compatriots. But when she felt the creeping sensation of bureaucracy, Begonia packed up her stuff and said goodbye. She didn't want any of that crud. She wanted to wake up and have no idea what adventures would fill her day. Which is why on the morning after quitting the Fusiliers, Begonia put up an ad looking for someone to start up a for-hire mercenary group with her.
    • Young Begonia.
    • She got only one applicant: a short goblin-like man named Zatz. Gruff, angry and mute, Zatz was a war veteran from a different planet who was brought onto Balder during one of its waves. For a long time, Zatz had wandered around from place to place, shooting at things in exchange for money and food. It was nice work, but he wanted to have a roof under his head and steady payment. Plus, Begonia's first reaction wasn't to hiss or wince at his stubby nose, sharp teeth or scaly skin, but rather to ask where he had gotten the patches dotting his coat. He could appreciate someone who cared more for experience than looks.
    • Soon later, 'Begonia & Zatz' opened up shop in the Western Quadrant. They will do just about any job you ask them to do, no questions asked. But they do have rules: one, they won't hurt Fusiliers. Two, they won't hurt innocent people. And three, it has to be an adventure. Why? Because that's what Begonia wants. You can find her hanging around the bars and watering holes of the Western Quadrant, and she'll tell you exactly why: "there's always somethin' new to do in this world... I wan' to do it all."

  • Johnny Cage:
    • Part of the original warriors, movie star and martial artist Johnny Cage took it pretty hard when he learned he wasn't going home. No movies to star in, no more keeping Earth safe, and no Sonya Blade. Despite that, he tried keeping everyone's spirits up, telling jokes, stories about his life before Balder, and keeping his closest friends from falling into dismay.
    • Once the City was established, Cage quickly took note of the lack of entertainment options. After asking the Mayor to approve his idea, Cage led the construction of a theater, the shining beacon of a new ascertainment district. And the opening performance would be a play based on the history of Balder's defeat. A good chunk of people brought over were happy to get back into the business. But there was no one to direct. The others looked to Cage and he took on the challenge of being an actor-director.
    • After some hard work (and a lot of creative troubles), Balder's first theater opened with a pompous ceremony. Cage Theater was nothing fancy, but it's indoors and can hold a large number of people... which is pretty much all it needed to do. Under Cage's direction, the play 'The True Adventures of Johnny Cage and Friends' was produced and opened to a packed theater. Anyone expecting accuracy was sorely mistaken.
    • Everyone's personality was exaggerated. For example; Akane is a complete ditz who often puts the group danger, Laura is completely silent and stab-happy, whilst Cage himself is the hero and leader who almost always has to save everyone. Some of the changes include Guzma getting his crippling injuries from one of the god's attacks, the complete removal of Envy and Flowey (Asriel just looks like what he does now) and the only two deceased heroes in the play being Mumen Rider (portrayed as an inspiring figure whose death was the motivation behind Balder's defeat) and Bruce Wayne (portrayed as the sacrifice necessary for Balder's defeat). Cage wanted to add everyone who helped, but a working play came first.
    • Despite some inaccuracies, the majority of the audience loves it. Today, other theaters and plays popped up around the first and even as Cage is getting on in his years, he still plays as himself in the same story he made for the public.

Hello everyone!

I'm happy to announce that I've drastically reworked the Balder lore and put it all into one neat Google document, organized with sections, links, pictures, and everything else.

Hopefully this makes things easier for everyone! I've also added the link to my signature, so you can always find it.

  • The Children of Wayne High
    • Ioka Crew is a 13-year old student of the mystic arts. He hails from a land where once you reach adulthood, you give your body as a vessel to one of reality's many spiritual beings who want to enjoy the earthly pleasures. As such, until you're of age, you spend your life bettering your physical and mental self to become the perfect vessel (seeing as, if a spirit grows tired of being you, they can leave your body, at which point you full on die). Ioka was born to a pair of spirits who wanted to see what having children were like. However, they weren't interested in raising those children. As such, Ioka, along with his three brothers and four sisters, were abandoned at an early age. The oldest brother, Ioka took it upon himself to take care of his family, becoming a prime wielder of the mystical arts. At age 12, he arranged a deal with a snake spirit that would give his family a life of comfort in exchange for his body as a vessel when he came of age. One year later, he was mysteriously taken to Balder. Despite all this, he continues to study to the best of his abilities, believing that when his 18th birthday arrives, the snake spirit will take over his body and his family will continue to live a life of peace.
    • Luo Zhihao is a 15-year old boy. He hails from a land where there is no such thing as a 'government'. The neighborhood he lived in was controlled by a ruthless mob boss who ruled the land with an iron fist. Luo was taught from an early age to wield firearms, defend himself and mistrust anyone who said their objective was 'to protect the common folk'. When he was 10, his house was raided by the mob boss' goons after his father refused to pay protection money. The first rain of bullets took his father, but he and his mother managed to escape. Suddenly, a weird portal appeared, and he and his mother ran headfirst into it. Though they were now in a strange land, they were very much safe. Newcomers to Balder, Luo and his mother lived in poverty for a while, until Luo began offering his services to a duo of mercenaries known as Begonia and Zatz. This, along with some money his mother got working as a farmhand, allowed the two of them the chance to buy a house. Due to his mother's insistence, Luo now attends Wayne High, but uses his free time to work around Balder, doing odd jobs and acting as the occasional private bodyguard.
    • Mayve is a 16-year old boy. He hails from a futuristic society where highly advanced synthetic bodies have been developed, allowing those with them to essentially shed their mortal needs and live perfect, immortal lives. However, these bodies are extremely costly, and many spend their entire lives working just to get one of the first models, or a janky prototype, or whatever their measly salaries can afford, enticed by the promise of being someone else. Mayve's parents met working in an off-world mining facility, and only got married after both of them managed to gain a position with office work, enough to give both of them a comfortable lifestyle. Mayve, their child, was born a girl, and for the beginning, the two of them thought everything was just fine. But before long, they began noticing that Mayve never felt comfortable- not in their lifestyle, but in his own body. They tried everything they could, but every doctor, every analyst gave the same diagnosis. After a long conversation with their daughter, the two collected all of their savings and acquired not only the best doctor to help Mayve in his transition, but also the perfect synthetic body (they even got one with aging features). Though they were now filled with debts, the smile in their son's face made everything worth it. Unfortunately, some people- those who had to gain from enforcing those debts- didn't care about Mayve's well-being. And then, a miracle happened: right before Mayve was kidnapped to ensure his parents would pay every single one of the debts, the entire family was taken to a brand new land, one where they could start a new, and one where Mayve could study without worrying about his future.
    • Paragon is 15. They come from a world where everyone is born connected to the internet. As such, they have aliases instead of names, hence why their name is Paragon. Until they came to Balder, Paragon didn't exactly have a sense of self, having only used their physical body to eat, sleep and go to the bathroom. In the connected realm, Paragon was a mechanic who would fix just about anything. As such, they have extensive knowledge of programming, hacking, advanced mechanics, engineering... all skills which became useless when they were suddenly plugged off the connected realm and thrown into Balder. Paragon is still new to this world, and as such has a lot of problems understanding how things are supposed to work in a land where the internet isn't even a concept. They're absolutely awful at fighting and will literally fall down from just a flick of someone's fingers. But they can insult you in several languages!
    • Chaya Muñoz is a 16-year old girl. She hails from Earth, or at least an Earth very similar to our Earth, or as she often recalls 'the most boring place in the world'. There was absolutely nothing magical or weird about Chaya's world, and she lived her life seeking escapism through fiction... whenever she wasn't at a dead-end job, bagging groceries so she could have more money for her books and games. One day, whilst playing a random game on her computer, a portal appeared on her screen, and Chaya wasted no time in going through it. Though she has been here for a while now, the world of Balder still fascinates her, and she loves everyone and everything in it, happy that she could finally live the life that she always dreamed of. Chaya is very ambitious and wants to gain magical/weird powers herself so she can finally stop being the one normal human. In fact, she'd give anything for that. Chaya also has a secret crush on Yui, though no one knows if it's because she likes her or because Yui herself is 'the most special'.
    • Sarai is a 14-year old girl. She arrived at Balder as a very young girl and immediately fell in love with the original warriors. Her parents were police officers in their world, and quickly joined the Fusiliers, not interested in having their daughter live a life of poverty. Both of them were assigned to the Eastern Quadrant, and as such Sarai spent her entire childhood looking outside the window and marveling at the dangers her parents were facing every day. After 10 years in the Eastern Quadrant, Sarai's parents requested a transfer to the Western Quadrant, wishing to spend more time with their growing daughter. Sarai is deadset on becoming a Fusilier and dutifully believes that the first step to doing so is by being the hero of her class, which is why she will often yell at anyone trying to pick on kids like Frankie. And by yell I don't mean punching, I mean physically pushing them out of the room and yelling over their complaints.
    • Gma is a... kid? His story is an odd story. Gma arrived at Balder in the fourth wave, at the tender age of 13. Or at least... well, the thing is, when he first walked through the portal, his upper half stayed on the other side, fighting off something. And it stayed there, until the portal closed, cutting him in half. Many thought the poor kid was dead, until two days later, he suddenly reappeared. He was whole again, but terrified, and unable to talk about what happened. Months later, in the middle of dinner, he disappeared. He reappeared again two days later, but he was different. You see, whilst for us it was two days, for Gma it was seven months. And this happened again, and again, and again. Out of nowhere, Gma would disappear for two days, and then return, having spent even more time in the void between the multiverses. Last time, he spent two hundred and fifty five years, doing Balder knows what. But no matter how much time passes inbetween those two days, he always looks thirteen years old. And with every trip, he returns weirder and weirder, uncapable of comprehending time the way the other people of Balder do.
      • The twist? Only Mayor Cassiopea and Commander Kiryuin know this. Both of them found out about Gma's Paradox early during his life in Balder, after he spent one year, three months and seven days on the void between the multiverses. To ensure his safety and to give him a chance at living a normal life at Balder, Cassiopea hid his true identity and gave him a house in the City Center. He goes to Wayne High in the hopes that one day, he'll stop disappearing and be allowed to live the life of a normal kid.... even if he's anything but a normal kid.

I think I want to add one of the New Face Team to the planet, as a 5th wave member with the same theme we've been going with so far: What sounds like the voice of Orochi has called to them with the same message that Link and the spider chick have gotten, and they wake up on Balder. Maybe it's after Orochi's unsealing in XIV, maybe it's after the Queen Of Fighters tournament shortly afterwards, maybe it's before, but the general concept is the same.

The messages Link and the spider-chick have gotten are different though. It's just pieces to a larger message.
