The big issue, of course, is the African setting is just set dressing.

Because it's about REVENNGGGEEEE against Wesker.

And JILLLLL!

Oh silly RE.

Any news on RE 2's remake?

RE6 shows an RE game doesn't have to star Chris, Jill and/or Leon to be good.
The game would have to be good to show that.

Some of us actually like the characters, though, and wanted to see more of them.

Still do.

Well, then the answer's simple; you'd have to choose between the characters and the setting (or have Chris et al do something else).

As I've said, saying that avoiding the specific imagery of white guy etc (I'm not typing it out again) would rule out Africa as a setting's complete nonsense.

what is there to like about chris redfield

like, especially before re5 when there weren't any boulder or lava memes

as a character he compares unfavorably with wet cardboard

[up]...He's that bad?

I'm not an RE expert (everything I know comes from this wiki and those videos I've been watching) but Chris seems like an ok dude.

He's a Vanilla Protagonist but one well beloved as an audience surrogate.

Plus Claire Redfield was his sister.

So he gets love by proximity.

Guess he's not as cool as Leon huh?

Or is Leon considered boring too?

Chris's dull and bland, which, a lot of the characters are, but.

But wow Chris manages to outdull them all.

Shove him in a fridge offscreen to make his sister and Jill sad.

His death would be better and more interesting writing than he ever was in life.

Leon is great.

I don't know how all the RE protags rank among each other in the fandom's eyes but I'm fairly sure Leon is one of the most popular mostly because of RE 4. He's such a dork it's endearing.

But yeah, Chris is basically as generic a videogame protagonist as you can get. This was especially noticeable in the timeframe of RE 5's release with the oversaturation of "angry white guy with a gun" games being at an all-time high. Not that it's uncommon now but it was mega in vogue back then thanks to the dominance of first and third person shooters.

Well, he does supplex Zombies and isn't afraid of anything.grin

I guess Chris is too jaded while Leon, despite everything he's gone through never totally stopped being that rookie who had the worst first day on the job ever.

I mean, when the reason you weren't MDK'ed in a Zombie Apocalypse is because you got drunk and mistakenly slept in, it's hard not to chuckle at the sheer hilarity of it.

Leon got a personality transplant in Resident Evil 4.

He got to be the ladies man.

Except in no way would he be the ladies man in RL but he can pull it off because it's a B-movie environment anyway.

Chris' personality just upgraded to "JILLLLLL!" and "WESKKKKKKER!" Mind you, I think Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 are the single biggest collection of personality and character development write-ups for the classic characters you'll find outside of the EU.

It's just few people have played them.

Chris is actually...somehow, I shit you not, LIKABLE in these games.

He's still Generic Mc Dudebro in Revelations, but he gets some ship teasing with Jill (and is an idiot about it) to give him something. It's not that much more elaborate than it was in 5, though.

He's just so Adorkable with his partner throwing herself at him and him being clearly uncomfortable.

Ironically, they've been making Leon more like Chris since Resident Evil Degeneration. Resident Evil Vendetta even goes as far as giving Leon Chris' hair color and a similar arc to the one Chris had in RE 6.

And Vendetta too. And that is why modern Leon is bullshit

Why can't we go back to the awesome glory days of RE 4 Leon? He was awesome there.

Sadly, I don't think she was quite memorable enough from the 6 cast.

The only thing I remember about Helena is the part where she sneakily told Hunnigan that Leon had a lead on the zombies they were going to look into, and the buddy I was playing with said (as Leon), "Yeah, I know a... guy," and I said, "His name is Helena." So the most memorable thing about her for me is that she set us up to make a 30 Rock reference.

How much Jill rank as protagonist?. I kind of love her after RE 3, is hard not to buddy with your chararter when you are being followed by penis hand(Nemesis).

God, how much I hate nemesis.

Jill is cool. She is the Master of Unlocking, after all. And she's much better to play as than Chris.
