Episode 3… I feel like the more they try to explain stuff, the less I understand what's going on. They talk about this Chakravartin stuff as it was totally clear and obvious… It doesn't help that the subs I watched had several mistranslations − like Hakuno saying he "only remembers his last day at school" but they translate by "daily life"… The umu counter is pretty funny though
Outside of the setting, lots of confusing stuff. What did Hakuno do? How many times has he died already? What did Rin do? And where did she get a goddamn flying motorcycle?
Character interactions make this show so far though. I like all the characters so far: Saber, Rin, Shinji (!!) and Rider. And no, I didn't forget anyone. So far Hakuno is so dead and passive he barely qualifies as a "character"… it's almost disturbing and probably deliberate.
Don't worry Lyendith, being confused is the intended state while watching Last Encore.
tbh the fansubs are so bad I actually prefer the dub because they get across what's going on so much better
The official website does have some terms to explain stuff after each episode but none of that's getting officially translated so rip western fandom's understanding

Yeah, you expect some chuunibyou nonsense going into a fate anime, but Extra is the most nonsense its ever been.
*in the most monotone possible voice* "I feel so much hatred."
Guy makes Sieg look interesting.

Yeah, for those who don't understand Japanese, this is a case where the dub is probably the better option…
Who's Sieg?
Episode 4…
- A gun-nut old guy voiced by Mugihito facing a blonde woman in a fancy dress with Antiquated Linguistics and a royal bun. Why is this Saber not voiced by Ohara Sayaka, dammit?
- Between the butt-cleavage and… whatever the hell she was wearing when coming out of the bath, Saber's fashion sense is becoming increasingly distracting.
- So SE.RA.PH was supposed to be a paradise… where people kill each other…? What did I miss?
- Okay… so now we're 1000 years in the future and humanity is on the brink of extinction. That explains why Shinji had the time to do all that, not why anyone from 1000 years ago is still alive.
- Considering all the Mind Screw regarding the timeline, should we assume that Hakuno was the Master who got killed in the prologue where Saber was fighting the Chakravartin? Somehow?
She'd probably take that as a compliment.
Did you miss the part where this is all happening in a giant supercomputer? Those aren't their bodies. None of it physically exists.

Well, it's a bit more complicated than that.
Basically, keep watching. Everything will become clearer when you get to the end.
Well, episodes 8 and 9. Not quite the end of what's been released, and the actual end of the series is due out in... 10 days?
Oh… I did miss that. Somehow.
I guess everything's fine then.
By the way, the sub's changed "sousha" from "maestro" to "prætor" for some reason. Go figure.
It's complicated based on official translation of previous works vs. fan translation.
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru! The official translation for the original Fate/Extra game used "Praetor" for "sousha" and that's stuck in subsequent translated game sequels and fan translations because it was the first translation
However the official dub uses "Performer" which is probably better overall
…Aaaand it's "Ludius" now. Seems like the team has changed, as the umu counter is no longer there.
So Archer was Robin Hood, to my complete non-surprise for once. The battle was a bit more strategical than the first, which is cool. Didn't expect Rani to die so soon though, even if she largely seemed to miror Hakuno's apathy. Unlike him though, she actually had something she cared for, so I was still a little sad for her… Then a wild Rin appears. Love the other two's delayed reaction.
…Little bit of Fridge Logic here. If Dan is no longer eligible to ascend because he no longer counts as a Master… shouldn't defeating him be useless too?
And now we're in the Witch Dimension the third floor. They did a rather good job at making it disorienting and weird but not completely incomprehensible, so point for that. And it's silly, but I loved the scene of Rin and Hakuno walking in the forest while Saber was walking on the floating tiles like a kid on the edge of a sidewalk. It added to the whimsical mood.
Also, Hakuno almost acted like a human being in this episode…? Weird.
Dan is the only one on that floor as he killed everyone else so by default defeating him automatically unlocks the next level due to a lack of other opponents.
Spoilers for Witch Dimension arc I am unreasonably bugged by the fact that the anime never mentions what class of Servant Nursery Rhymes is like all the other boss servants. It wasn't exactly hard to guess it was a Caster, but it's still annoying to have to look it up.
Episode 7… so, uh, are those scenes between Hakuno and Alice flashbacks? Or was this a different Hakuno? He had a different Command Seal at any rate… Also, the "light wheel" has only four branches in the scene where she parts with him, just like in the prologue… But boy, did we mention this was a SHAFT anime?
Aaaand… Rin can use a Noble Phantasm now. So that's how she defeated those discount Servants earlier. Makes sense.
……
…Wait no it doesn't. >.> She's a goddamn human… or is she?
Not that it matters much… I feel like it's such a weird Servant it could almost be in a class of its own.
Hmm, so I wonder what became of Amari. I doubt the one we saw last episode was just an illusion… but they do say that there's no one left on the floor sooo… I dunno.
To be fair, they're not actually fighting the Servant on this floor, they're fighting the Master, though it does bug me slightly that Alice never acknowledges Nursery Rhyme.
Also the Hakuno thing will be explained later

I mean… the real Alice is dead. From what I get, the one we saw was literally recreated by NR.
Alice is a ghost who somehow got uploaded to the Moon Cell which is why some of SE.RA.PH's rules don't apply to her, Nursery Rhyme came later
Since it definitely wasn't clear Nursery Rhyme in the present is stuck in the form of the book that Hakuno picks up, which is why that book vanishes when Alice died

Episode 8… Huh, so I guess there was nothing of interest in the fourth floor. That two-person stretching exercice looks like an excellent way to ruin your back. It's cute though. I also like how Saber is so bright she literally shines in the rain. Now that speech about geniuses sure was, uh, written by Nasu?
So I guess we know why Hakuno had no personality now. He was literally no one, or rather tons of people at once. And now the real, dead Hakuno appears…? Interesting.
…Wasn't Gae Bolg supposed to be a spear that cannot miss its target?
No Gae Bolg could miss, but it was always fatal if it hit. Filling their entire body with Barbs and requiring the Spear actually be cut of the victim to be retrieved.
Gungir Odin's spear from Norse Mythology, is the spear that always hits it's target. Stating that it did not matter the strength or skill of the user.
Oh. I see.
Aaaand I'm all caught up, which means I can read the previous pages of this thread now.
I had been spoiled Saber's identity ages ago but her story was still beautifully told and animated. Not sure why her telling her name to Hakuno is silenced though… the lip movements don't seem to match "Nero Claudius" either… weird. Anyway, if her Masters were a female and a male Hakuno, her being bi becomes pretty convenient. Too bad her fight against Berserker felt a bit too… easy.
Episode 10 was again rather heartbreaking, but I wish that connection between Rin and Rani had been hinted at a bit earlier. Clearly the former played an important part, but the latter barely had any screentime before episode 9.
…Well, just waiting for the movie now. So far it's been a weird but enjoyable show, and Nero's truly a blessing on this world, so they'd better not screw up the climax.
PS: So… Amari wasn't relevant at all in the end?
Edited by Lyendith on Jul 21st 2018 at 2:18:56 PM
Buy the drama CD
it hasn't come out but apparently it focuses on Amari
Male Hakuno is always the intended protagonist of the Extraverse. Last Encore's the only one where she's given relevance as the original. CCC even her attraction to girls was just them copy pasting Male Hakuno's dialogue but replacing gender pronouns.
Extella's backstory from Nasu's Blog even has her as an Opposite-Sex Clone of Hakuno in it's version of Extra.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.
Episode 2! …Yeah, talk about messing with expectations. >.> This Saber is certainly much more hyper (and much more fanservicey) than the blue one.
On the negative side, I'm not a big fan of Tange Sakura's voice acting as Saber… she tries to sound energic and over-the-top but ends up sounding like she's trying too hard. It feels forced. That's a problem when she gets 60% of the episode's lines. Also, I don't like the opening much… the song's fine but the visuals are just Saber swinging her sword around for 90 seconds, which doesn't do much for me. Also, what the hell is that butt cleavage in the ending? >.>
On the positive side… I actually like the setup for this. One of the masters being tired of this shit and working up a way to avoid the HGW entirely makes so much sense. Still… how much time has passed since Hakuno's "death" and his summoning of Saber? =.= It seems like Shinji's "paradise" has existed for years… But anyway, so far all the characters seem interesting outside of the blank slate protagonist (have you guessed this is adapted from a video game yet? >.>) Though he might become interesting too, seeing that cliffhanger.
