In the original show, apparently Hordak was the one who raised her instead of Shadoweaver. I wonder why they changed that, because in the 80's version he was always praising her and he was actually a good father figure to her, even though he did kidnap her.

Also I like how the Horde uses What Measure Is Not Cute in their propaganda to persuade people to their side, because that explains why you have scarier and uglier looking people.

@Spooky Mask.

I don't think what happened with Entrapta was contrived at all. The way she joined the horde made perfect sense. The good guys still don't know she is alive, but I imagine she won't come back to them anytime soon.

Entrapta's whole thing was being nominally good anyway. She seems like a chaotic neutral type; she doesn't really have much investment in either side of the conflict, but the Hoard people at least nurture her morbid scientific fascinations. I think that's why she was genuinely happy when Catra expressed interest in her research and said that nobody had ever actually asked her about her scientific career before.

According to this interview, Stevenson has at least 52 episodes on the can, and they're all in 13 episode arcs. There could always be more on the way, but at least those are set.

I’ll come right to the point and get right to my thoughts on this series, after seeing the first 13 episodes a little while ago

1. I have to say that I’m a little bit conflicted about the way that Adora’s character is being handled: I mean on the one hand; it does seem like the show is being a bit too hard on her at certain points, but, on the other hand; part of me does feel that this at least comes close to leveling her with her brother, Adam, seeing as it didn’t really strike me as fair that Prince Adam was being portrayed as being naive, lazy and irresponsible and was almost constantly getting frequent flack for it, whereas Adora was initially being portrayed as being almost the perfect leadership type, incredibly intelligent and the model of responsibility, without ever getting any sort of trouble from anyone but the Horde. I mean that just didn’t seem all that fair to me, personally.

2. While I was watching the show, I was initially hoping for the He-Man stuff to be brought up at some point, however, now i am starting to feel that, since this show is about feminist empowerment and the female characters getting more spotlight, that hoping might, in fact, be somewhat sexist in someway.

It'd be fun if, should the show run long enough, Adora gets to rescue her long-lost unknown twin brother from his ensorclement at the hands of the evil Skeletor.

I like reversals.

[up], [up][up] He-Man and everything associated with MOTU is legally barred from appearing. They aren’t coming because of how the rights for each property is set up.

Currently, yes, there is an embargo. Success can change things.

[up][up]The way the license is structured, MOTU and Princess of Power are two separate toylines, so you need to get each license separately. Problem is someone already has rights to MOTU so all they can do are really obscure references, rather than have Skeletor show up.

Personally I would rather DC animation just adapted He-Man/ThunderCats and Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe. Be one hell of a make good for the nostalgia audience.

[up]Embargo is when a license is tied up with properties elsewhere. This sounds like a full on lack of rights to the characters because the license is out with someone else.

You just said the same thing twice. Point is, they can't use He-Man or his associated characters right now. I'd like to see a proper revival of the series in the future and, if this show really sells, I definitely wouldn't mind the tie-in via an origin reversal. Whenever the right clear up.

Probably won't happen, but it would be neat.

I liked it. The real heart is the personal conflict between Adora and Catra which I think works pretty well.

Other than "Greyskull", the only other MOTU reference was the magic word "Eternia".

I was a little disappointed they didn't use any of the original theme music, but music licensing is weird, especially for pre-home-video shows. Mattel owns the characters, but they may not have rights to the music used in the show.

And yes, MOTU is under option for a movie with some other studio (though it appears to be stuck in Development Hell), so Dreamworks can't use it.

See, stuff like that frustrates me to no end. Why bother blocking other MOTU characters when the guys who are supposed to be doing a movie on them are (more than likely) lazing around twiddling their thumbs?

Then again, I’m taking a Master of Fine Arts program on Film Production, so maybe I’ll gain some insight on this kind of thing eventually.

Then again again, I recall reading how the film license for MOTU was recently netted by Mattel a while back after Sony wasn’t doing squat with it, so...who knows really?

The most recent news on the MOTU movie was in April - when it was announced a director had been signed, the Nee Brothers.

https://www.denofgeek.com/us/movies/masters-of-the-universe/242423/masters-of-the-universe-reboot-finds-new-directors

On top of that, DC comics has the comic book rights, hence He-Man vs Thundercats and now Injustice vs MOTU, both of which I would love nothing more than for WB Animation to turn into movies ala the DC Animated Film library.

It’s the attachment of the directors that’s the big deal here. While that’s almost never a guarantee the film gets made (see the rotating cast in the director’s chair for a hypothetical Robotech movie), it does pretty much confirm Sony’s continued financial commitment to the film. Bonus points for Sony also being involved in the Robotech quagmire, but they’re the second company involved, so they’re no stranger to Development Hell.

So I guess we need to check back next year and see what’s going on.

[up] I’ll do you one better. Here’s what I was saying about Mattel establishing their own film division just as the film rights for He-Man (and Barbie) expired at Sony, dated September 10th 2018, 5 months after the article you found.

[up]Ok, now the timeline is making more sense. Most of not all of She-Ra’s 52 episodes was probably in the can at that point. So unless they do get a renewal, they can’t use those characters.

...I still want animated versions of those comics though, but that’s wishful thinking.

After watching more episodes, I'm pretty convinced they don't need any MOTU stuff. The new world they're building really stands on its own.

God there's a lot of art of Catra in her prom tux.

I smell review bombing from really weird and sad neckbeards who can't stand a kid's show reboot not specifically appealing to creepy 30-40 year old men.

In my defense, can you really blame me for wondering if whether or not He-Man and MOTU would make an appearance? I mean that is basically how the original She-Ra series got started in the first place, after all. And let’s face it, reboots don’t always stray that far away from the source material, all things considered. Plus, let’s not kid ourselves with it, people, the subjects of Adora’s past, the true nature of ‘Grayskull’ and the truth behind Eternia are all bound to be touched on eventually in the future. She-Ra does have a good premise all on its own, but the way that it began in the 80s, and is currently going to a certain degree, will still always link it in some way to the He-Man franchise, they’re just that intertwined, at least from where I’m currently standing.

Just finished the opening two-parter and the show's really solid so far, with the second part really showing a good balance in tone as they go from cheery festival to horde devastation.

My only real complaint is that Swift Wind doesn't have an insanely deep voice. That's the one bit from the original show I wish they'd kept.

[up][up][up][up]Yeah, this is reminding me of Black Panther somehow having hundreds of negative audience reviews on places like IMDB before it was even in theaters. There are definitely a lot of things that could be improved (pacing and a lot of familiar plot elements are the most blatant for me), but there was a lot of hate going into this show before a single episode was even available online.

It's maybe the gayest part of an already extremely gay show.

Yeah from what I'm seeing there is already a very large LGBT Fanbase.
