Oh, so it wasn't just me who thought "those eyes look off..."

Um, hey, if we complain loud enough, this eye matter should be a easy feasible fix...right?

Well look at you, indeed...

Looks like a good film but they might've overdone it with the eyes over there. tongue

Not being familiar with the source material at all, are her eyes supposed to be like that?

So wait, is Alita entirely in CGI or is it just the face and arms?

My brain hurts thinking about this...

EDIT: [up] Kind of...?

[up]I very distinctly remember Cameron saying Avatar was a trial run for the technology he wanted to use here. So my guess is yes.

I still can't tell if it's live-action or high-fidelity CG and the level of Uncanny Valley inherent in that confusion is turning me away from this whole thing.

[up][up][up]Okay but that's just a typical manga artstyle. Is she supposed to have larger eyes than everyone else?

Okay but that's just a typical manga artstyle.

Which is the issue here. It feels like they tried to create a realistic character with manga-like proportions but the result just does not look good.

The anime big eyes thing looks fine in 2d, and okay in stylized 3d (like the Polygon Pictures house style, even though they don't exaggerate it that much), but in this it just looks weird. I really hope that's part of the point of the movie, that Alita looks so strange for an actual reason.

In the manga, she's often drawn as having unusually large eyes. So they're maybe trying to do that here as well.

[up][up] Well, given that she's supposed to be a robot or cyborg of some kind (I only read a few volumes of the manga a long time ago and don't remember exactly what she is), there is an in-universe reasoning for her being some type of Uncanny Valley creation that stands out from everyone else.

But I'm getting the feeling that it isn't really going to work out that well.

This looks outright terrifying. The Uncanny Valley effect in this makes it hard for me to watch this without thinking "OH GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS" and the cover of Forever Young by Bob Dylan that they use in this trailer reminds me of that shitty Leonard Cohen cover from Justice League.

Yeah, the thing is, everyone in the manga had exaggerated, cartoony features, since that's the author's style. Translating this to exactly *one* character is, I dunno, like if an X-Men film used CG to give Wolverine, and only Wolverine, gigantic muscles for some reason but left everyone else looking normal.

I'm willing to forgive the face, since I'm fairly certain that the Uncanny Valley effect is intentional and integral to her character. The anime style is just an... Easter egg for fans of the original. I don't like it, but I'm not going to dwell on it because I've been waiting for this movie my whole adult life. However, if it's pg13 instead of R, I'm not even going to bother watching.

I honestly thought it would never actually get made, and I was completely blindsided.when I stumbled across the trailer.

It's just incredibly weird to see a huge budget movie directed by Robert Rodriguez. AKA Mr. Cheapo Mccheapington. While his movies can be super entertaining, they're also super low-budget.

Maybe they picked him because they knew he can do a good action movie and he won't inflate the budget anymore than necessary?
