Made in Abyss (Manga Thread)

Delayed slightly, November 10th now. Hopefully we don't get full hiatuses like Berserk or Hunter x Hunter.

At this moment, I'd prepare more WMG ideas, or perhaps actually doing some drawings.

Yesterday, I've just made a WMG entry about the bottom of the Abyss. So, feel free to place your bet there: What lies at the bottom of the Abyss?

Raw's out. It's... surreal, to say the least.

For one, the Butt guy is back.

To be truly fucked up, your Made in Abyss chapter needs to contain references to Abyss Worship, weird animals, fire, death, and the lower intestines!

I did not want to know how those toilets worked, but the author was kind enough to show us anyway. Nanachi's off to a veeeery long sleep. Not good.

…The Narehate village is getting increasingly disturbing in all sorts of way. It really feels like another world, a place where humans shouldn't be. I know this can describe the Abyss as a whole, but here it almost seems like they're literally in another dimension.

It all reads like an old fairy tale, especially in The Fair Folk sense. I'm not even sure what constitutes as death in this village, as Maa-san can attest to. Then there's the fact that Faputa's bodyguard is not just capable of speech, but actively looking out for the kids against her wishes.

That one shot of a crowd of Narehate is not just unnerving, it feels downright malevolent.

That giant horse thing just looks too cool, even if it is a dick.

I thought the bony mask with the eyelashes looked familiar. It was one of the first Narehate presented in the village. The other two might come into play as well (especially the middle one; who the hell drew that?).

yeah, that village is just... not a place for little girls

I'm honestly not sure if I want to continue with the series. Up until now all the sexual content could be handwaved in different ways, but this whole last chapter came off like some sort of creepy doujinshi, first with the toilet, then with the Attempted Rape, and immediately after that you get a closeup of Meinya's "abyss" as Maa-san stares, drooling (WHY?).

The last two chapters have been rather extreme in that regard, first with Reg's arousal while Faputa is being a psycho and now this.

I draw the line at loli rape, and the fact that she's carrying with her what is essentially a BFG (see below) makes it even more absurd. The author is irredeemable in his lolicon tendencies to the point it's even making me wonder if the multiple scenes of Riko suffering are meant to be "ryona".

But what bothers me more is how Riko's potential is being constantly squandered. In that scene she's carrying Reg's arm which can be still fired (as seen during the fight against Bondrewd, even thought she landed the killing hit, the whole thing was pretty much "Bondrewd: oh you used the arm while detached, cool, oh hey Nanachi come here let's get some closure while I die since you are the more popular of the two, lol"), she could just have used it as a deterrent or even fire it to defend herself, but yet again she has to fall into the Damsel in Distress role needing to be saved, much like in a certain other scene where she was about to attack with Blaze Reap but Reg stole the spotlight. I get she's "the one to protect" but come on. This is getting way too hard to excuse by now, even with her being the resident Iron Woobie.

Just to address the point about Riko - the fact that she's still carrying a fireable Reg arm is a good point to make, but remember that, Blaze Reap or no, she's still a 12-year-old girl, and they're down in a level of the Abyss that routinely kills people of Ozen and Bondrewd's caliber. I agree that she should be shown defending herself as well, but if the average Red Whistle (Riko's pure drive aside) could fend off the things they're dealing with, the Abyss wouldn't be much of a threat.

To be fair, she didn't have a chance to fire the thing, and it would probably be a bad idea anyway (what with the "balancing" and stuff). But I agree that this chapter went a bit overboard with the gross stuff…

It's the Sixth Layer, and the Narehate Village is implied to be it's own special brand of terror. What else can one do? And while I agree that Riko is as defenseless as one comes (let's not mince words, the alleyway is basically a rape scenario), I'm actually happy with the amount of spotlight she received this chapter. She's continuing her role as The Heart and Magnetic Hero to full effect; just like how she's managed to attract the positive attention of Nanachi and Prushka, she's recruited Maa into the group. No matter how this ends up, the butt dude is gonna play an integral role in traversing deeper into the Abyss.

As for Reg's arm, I'm not sure how far ahead the author's thinking about that. Don't think it's a good idea though; "balancing" issues aside, the Narehate Village is a bubble to shield its inhabitants from the rest of the Sixth Layer. The Incinerator vaporizes anything in its path. What's to say an errant blast couldn't pop that protective bubble and open a new can of worms?

If you want to stop though, then that's okay. I expect the Squick factor to only go further on from there, and everyone's got a threshold.

Basically what Chef said, I think. Especially given that there are still two White Whistles out there; by that metric, Bondrewd was only the halfway point.

Who knows, maybe at least one of them will be a decent person.

Anime continuation confirmed. Unless the voice actors standing together and the projector screen saying "Deep in Abyss" is but an elaborate hoax.

Yeah, it is confirmed but no proper date given yet. Although given the only complete arc is Idofront, it might be too short unless the author pumps out some more chapters to at least complete the village arc.

I'm hoping it's an OVA thing. Much more freedom than a template schedule to wreck havoc.

Hell, make the Best Dad arc into a 2 hour film. I'd watch that.

Yeah, to be accurate it doesn't say 'Season 2', it just says 'continuation'. I would imagine an OVA/number of OV As, or a film.

Raw for the new chapter has been released. Finally, some more Narehate that aren't nightmares. WTF factor is still present. What the motherfucking hell is that last panel?

Riko likes her food spicy apparently. She also meets with the apparent "mayor" of the village. And learns a few Narehate words. …Isn't that Nanachi at the end?

Huh… I was checking the official site to see if the new chap was up, but they uploaded chapter… 26. For some reason.

Alright, everyone. Shit somehow still manages to get weirder.

It is confirmed that Bondrewd has visited Narehate Village before. Considering his stock of children, he must've been considered very loaded by the villagers.

This magic stuff surrounding the village is stupidly powerful, considering what it did for Nanachi to end up in this situation.

We might have a new adventuring partner on our hands. An A+ character design too, so doubly nice.
