Jenny Slate is no longer voicing Missy on the show. She thinks black characters should have black voice actors. The creators support her decision.

Found out about this. I refuse to watch Big Mouth, but I support the notion of a white actress exiting the role of a black character, especially in light of recent circumstances in today's society.
I find that pretty ridiculous. The whole point of voice acting is that you can play any character regardless of what they look like. Race should be a non-issue for voice acting. The only thing that matters should be the voice.
Institutional racism needs to be fought against, but this is pure virtue signaling by celebrities rather than addressing the root causes. If anything having a mandate that black cartoon characters need to be voice by black voice actors promotes the idea that race is even more rigid than the social construct it is.
I just hope this doesn't set a precedent where VAs won't get hashtag canceled if they voice a character not matching their race

It's amazing how much pushback 'maybe we could give more opportunities to Po C voice actors' is getting.
Yeah, really. There are so many more opportunities for white V As. One of my fave V As is Cree Summer and besides black girls, she only gets to voice a handful of animal characters like Lizzy in land before time or cleo on clifford. just saying they could voice aliens or animals is not enough compared to the 90% (or whatever. it's a huge majority) of white people on TV.
(I am aware that Cree and Phil Lamarr etc have voiced a handful of non black characters. But the vast majority of roles for Po C actors is Po C characters and there are still too many Po C characters voiced by white people who already have a majority of roles.)

see my completed Tangled (Varian) fanfic collection! https://archiveofourown.org/works/24467056/chapters/59049532While it's fun to have characters be voiced by people their actual race, on the other hand this could limit us in a new type of way in the name of looking POC if people get overtly conscious.
But white actors voicing Po C has always been iffy, especially if they're doing a stereotypical voice or accent.
×4
This was done by choice, not because of a hashtag. Same with the other actors that have since decided to leave their roles.

"They truly were a Aqua Teen Hunger Force"Season 4 premieres December 4.
Hello. I don't watch Big Mouth, but I'd like to ask for your opinion regarding an Unfortunate Implications example:
- Big Mouth caught some backlash for its definition of pansexuality in "Rankings." New pansexual girl Ali derisively referred to bisexuality as "so binary" and implies that pansexual people can be attracted to trans people whereas bisexual people cannot, in the process implying trans girls and boys are not "fully" girls and boys. LGBT fans quickly criticized this definition for its biphobic and transphobic implications, and even co-creator Andrew Goldberg admitted they "missed the mark" and promised to do better in future seasons.
According to the article that's linked to in the example, the character giving this definition of pansexuality is portrayed in-universe as being wrong, biphobic, and transphobic. Would it be accurate to say that whoever got outraged at this was reacting to an out-of-context clip, and that the full episode presents a much more fair and reasonable view of bisexuals?
(EDIT: and right after posting this, I get a satisfactory response in the Unfortunate Implications thread.)

I have an announcement for you...
I dare to watch... *dun dun duuun* Big Mouth! From the beginning to end (of what we've got so far). And yes, I'm aware that a long crazily animated and gross journey awaits me.
Wanna place some bets?
