The excellent voice-acting in Spectacular sells it.

He had a really good voice there.

[up][up]I mean, look at the guy: he's got painted-on eyes and a big snaggletoothed smile — he's basically a monster clown, the way a lot of supervillains look like clowns, even the ones that aren't. If you're not up for a character who's a little over-the-top and silly while also being an ultraviolent monster, that's fine, but that's Venom. Comics run on that "ridiculous but awesome" factor. I don't know that there's much to Venom without it.

[up] Sure, but I feel that this particular flavour is more difficult to pull off in live action.

It often is, but pulling back and trying to go more realistic with this of all characters seems like that much more of a struggle.

Doesn’t help that they’ve been advertising this as a realistic super-serious horror story so Venoms attempt at humor feels out of place.

Yeah "funny Venom" and "creepy Venom" don't really mesh all that well. If you want funny Venom you gotta make him like the early-2000's Spider-Man game:

New IMAX poster: https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3521788/imax-poster-venom-shows-teeth-tongue/

Okay, this is pretty cool. I especially like how the tongue is turning back into symbiote goo as well.

The power of a good poster. This is making me think that I might want to see this movie just for the effects. It's been a while since I thought about seeing a movie in those terms. Just so... desensitized by the sheer volume of mediocre CG out there, but this does actually have a good look. I know I'm being manipulated by branding, but hey, if it gets people to care about the movie again...

Somebody's probably going to point out that Todd Mc Farlane isn't the sole creator of Venom, but I do wonder if he'd be the same character without that proto-Violator design.

I do think the effects look pretty cool. It's just the writing that sounds terrible. Also, that horrible accent that Tom Hardy's trying to do, which certainly isn't doing his line-reads any favors.

I'm in to it. I'm not sure it's good, but I like Tom Hardy's weird voices.

[up][up] I know, right? I used to think that Bane's voice was incomprehensible because of the thick mask over his face. But apparently it's just Tom Hardy.

On the other hand, if they keep it as-is, the audience can't understand the terrible writing.

Okay, this is pretty cool.

In their defiant quest to shoot down any kind of good vibes their film might be creating, Sony then proceeded to release this atrocity of a poster.

We interrupt this Venom movie to bring you our generic detective thriller from 2004, already in progress.

He's literally Spawn sans cloak, boots and gloves, with Violator's mouth.note

It's as Todd Mc Farlane as it gets.

Same way Pouch guy is peak Liefeld (Even if it's not by Liefeld. It even has Youngblood's Disease. And no feet!)

Oh, for sure. But what I mean is could his personality and popularity have become what it is if not for Mc Farlane's penchant for slavering snaggletoothed monsters with prehensile tongues?

And yeah, of those three character designs, Venom's the clear winner for me. The contrast of the moment when the clean lines of the default suit turns into goo and tendrils, that's pretty cool.

Oh, I am not saying those designs are bad in any way.

(Though if I picked a winner, I'd go for classic Spawn)

IGN exclusive Venom clip

Hardy's accent is atrocious. And this is coming from a guy with a lisp.

Edit: And the editing is even worse.

Everything I see about this movie makes it look bad. I'm not sure what to make of that scene. Aside from the dialogue something about the way it was filmed looks off.

I feel like Tom Hardy is trying to channel the Topher Grace version of Brock. Can't put my finger on why, but that is my feeling on what I am looking at.

Please.

It's like he's playing an actor who's having an addiction-fueled meltdown who's playing a character on a superhero movie.
