Soulburner got the best ending by far; he settled shit with Revolver and got the girl.

I mean, at least that last duel was much better than the sixty three final duels Arc-V went with.

Not really much to say overall. S1 was pretty great, barring a few annoying bits. S2 brought in Soulborener, Blood Spepherd and Bohman McNoConsistentMotivationOrCharacter, which was definitely crap... but at least it also introduced Lightning, Earth, and Aoi's more interesting deck. And S3... sure did happen.

A flawed show but I still enjoyed it all the same. If the next series can maintain its quality I'll be satisfied.

Huh 3 bad or at least contested shows in a row.

Is that a record?

Arguably all the shows are contested. Original had that stupid filler, GX because it was a lot less serious, 5Ds with it's second season, and the last three need no explanation.

that's why people hate GXtongue

More seriously, I'm pretty sure it was the early slice o' life format that drew the viewers' ire.

I have a greater appreciation for GX's slice of life segments because the whole thing was just fucking mental.

GX is what happens when the YGO writers smoke weed for a whole week and then write a script afterwards.

  • Every season's got their fans and haters. I actually enjoy all the Yugi Oh seasons. Zexal just had like 10 out of 96 characters that could've been handled better, Arc V's fifth and sixth seasons definitely had missed potential, but I enjoyed most of it as well as everything that came before. Overall, I give VRAINS a B-.
  • With VRAINS, my only problems are:
    • Yusaku is far from boring, and I'm on the side of the fandom who likes Takeru, but they didn't interact or build up their friendship in the real world as much as I would like him to. Overall, they worked well together, but I wish Takeru helped Yusaku grow out of his shell a bit more.
    • Aoi had what, 4 wins and 6 losses. Her character development was great, she just needed like a super key win. Technically that's on Haru's fault, but I'll get to him.
    • My Emma x Kusanagi ship didn't start...sigh. Would've liked for Emma to get a win tho. Same with my Akira and Hayami ship but Hayami was entertaining enough...minus that one yandere moment but she recovered right after. Kitamura could've came back as a minor villain/pawn for Lightning tho
    • Sol Tech should've been way more active in season 2: like outside of Blood Shepard and Go with Earth, Queen should've been much more active or have taken part in the war of the Ignis to just try and gain more data on everyone or something. She really could've been a great female villain even if her actions did warrant seeing her lose to Ai so cartharic (I can't spell tonight).
    • And it would've helped to have Bishop, Knight, and Rook with physical appearances or be extra SOL bosses for the heroes.
    • Faust, Genome, and Varia, okay moreso Genome in terms of backstory and personality, just needed more depth and personality to them as well as wins. To be fair, VRAINS kept its cast small and I can see why. Introducing a ton of SOL tech company fodder for them to beat up wouldn't be enough of hype. They did give us good duels.
    • Spectre, season 1 and 2, great. Season 3, how did he get nerfed so easily offscreen? Takeru and Soulburner got closure, he and Aoi should've at least had a rematch, or at least have him interact more with the other Lost Incident kids.
    • Pandor actually didn't turn evil. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.
    • Haru...Harlin...Harlequin "a mute character in traditional pantomime, typically masked and dressed in a diamond-patterned costume". Considering his lack of focus or anything, makes sense. I don't mind he lost to Blue Maiden, but they could've built this up in the beginning of season 2. Or IDK, have him and Akira duel trying to get more data from SOL tech to help Lightning's plan, beats Akira (but not kill him) as Aoi goes to help him, and both Haru and Go berate Aoi and tell her as she is now, she probably couldn't even beat Haru. Or something like that. And maybe hint he feels inferior earlier on too. Overall, he should've been used more on in season 2's early half.
    • If the Ignis ended up being revived, it would've helped give Windy some closure or give Lightning a opportunity to redeem himself. Though Lightning took the consciousness of Jin that remembers the Lost Incident and prepared him in case he lost so that came off as a shock. Also, why didn't Lightning use Spectre and Jin's DNA as hostage? And why did Bohman only offer to step in AFTER Revolver had ended his turn? I like Bohman, his character shifts made sense, but Revolver was going to win, Bohman could've made sure of that at least.
    • Would've liked for Miyu to have become a recurring character in season 3. And show Windy's Origin was alive or have someone check up on him. They were good for the plot, but as characters...well Miyu's backstory was nice, and Ai could've at least talked to them in season 3 to bring up how they felt with their Ignis' or something.
    • Screw Frog and Pigeon's boss, they were held captive with BOMBS on their necks and still recorded the footage and headed in LINK VRAINS despite the risks. They deserve payment you rejected Naruto summon!!! (I'm not being ironic, they deserved a happy ending).
  • But that's just me.

So... should we make a thread for YGO 7 now, or wait till we get a name for it?

Well as others have said above me, that was certainly an ending, and certainly one that was emblematic of VRAINS as a whole. Yeah, Takeru was the one who came out of that looking the best, having come to a resolution for his story arc (even if that resolution was borderline Insane Troll Logic) and gotten the girl. I guess Akira came out okay too, having failed upward into that sweet eight-digit executive salary.

With the six (?) month hiatus I sincerely hope that Gallop can get their house in order and do some proper preproduction for the next series. And also that whoever's in charge of series composition, whether it be Yoshida or someone else (preferably someone else), actually cares about what they're doing.

Gotta give it to this series tho; Yusaku literally never lost a single duel. And had an ace monster that was so broken, it had to be banned and demoted from said ace card.

He lost in flashbacks only and had a couple draws, kinda like Yusei. https://yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Yusaku_Fujiki#Duels

[up][up] Neither of those are, or were, positive.

[up] Yusei lost to Kiryu and nobody can really deny it. The only reason he didn't was his D-Wheel crashing, but the dude had nothing to stop Ccapac Apu's attack. Yusaku never had a moment like this.

[up]Except Yusei never had any draws like Yusaku, and even then, the one time Yusei would have lost, its as if the universe said "LOL nope, Messiah can't lose a single duel ever" and made his D-Wheel crash.

Don't misinterpret, Yusaku still has too perfect a record, but at least unlike Yusei, people could regularly force Yusaku into a draw if they couldn't beat him.

[up] DRAWS were overused as hell in Vrains. They should be used extremely sparingly, and I, in fact, like very few utilizations of it throughout the series. VRAINS is an especially bad offendor, because they felt like complete padding due to writing themselves in a corner.

It also doesn't help that Yusaku had one of the most compelling "what if he lost" scenarios in YGO considering the nature of hist PTSD, but never following up on that just rubs much more salt in the wound.

I don't defend Yusei, but I will always point out that he did, in fact, lose once. It only being prevented on a technicality doesn't really change that. Both Yusei and Yusaku have shitty W/L records, but for different reasons.

EDIT: I also don't like how Atem is damn near invincible either, which I wanted to state for the record.

Atem's whole thing was being King of Games and never losing fairly until Yugi became his superior, which the anime kinda diluted by having Rafael beat him fairly and surrendering to let him win the second time.

[up] insert "intend to take a shit but still took a shit" meme here

I don't really care what the intent was behind it all; I don't enjoy seeing an invincible protagonist in any capacity like that. It's why I like Jou much more as a character compared to Kaiba or Atem, because he's the underdog of the trio. He's allowed to lose and grow from it, something neither of the other two are. That makes the other two much less compelling characters in my eyes.

It's why I don't think DM holds up as well as people like to say it does, manga or otherwise. Its character writing is ultimately not the best it could be, and I think other YGO products have had a better balance.
