Ellis' anti-religion views in this series were only slightly less obvious than they are in Supergod.

That's the comicbook mini-series where Ellis compared religion to a drug stash and had the world become mushroom food due to humanity's attempts to create physical gods.

[up]And now he’s been fired and is completely radioactive (he tried to say he was returning to a comic he did for Image without their approval, and Image went “LOLNOPE”) so maybe we won’t have to hear the lectures grind the plot to a halt. It’s one thing to have a theme, it’s another to hit it over and over and over to the point of utter redundancy.

Or to have such gruge you fuck up your own story, it was hard to take the corrupt church seriously and at times I feel the damn series was being to nice on dracula.

Hey it’s the church.

Crusades had to start somewhere.

[up]The French Revolution lends itself to class struggle and I’lol be disappointed if that isn’t the main theme hit.

Boy are you gonna have egg on your face when Garth Ennis takes over writing duties in the sequel show.

Seriously speaking as a Christian though, I do think Ellis was trying to be somewhat fair and I don't think the anti-religion thing was that invasive.

He did seem to be more against the church as an organization than God, though it's more ambiguous if God Is Evil in the Castlevania universe.

Both Trevor and Alucard give Sypha odd looks when she claims God deliberately made it so that humans can't understand each other by destroying the Tower of Babel. There's also the thing with the Archbishop still being able to consecrate the lake despite both being a demon, and being responsible for everything.

That actually helped the heroes, so it's interesting to look at it in the long run.

The same with Dracula and Lisa being in hell. They both got revived because they were together like that.

Was it just coincidence, or did God know exactly what he was doing.

People like bringing up the single priest who consecrated the water back in Gresit....but he's still just a single dude. No lines, he just raises his hand, does his thing off screen, and then disappears. He's less a counter to the more corrupt priests (who may not even be priests) in the first season, and more a minor plot point that needed to be quickly covered.

I don't know man.

[up]British writers always have a thing about authority, and religious authority is no different.

I'm more just of the mind that "new time period, let's try something new", especially since the French Revolution lends itself to class warfare commentary more than anything.

If Garth Ennis takes over Castlevania he'll have the Belmonts and any magic casters and vampire allies done away with in the first episode so some nobody with no bloodline can come in and take over because he's the REEEEEEEAL HERO.

But at the same time, yeah, Ellis did seem to be more concerned with how the Church authorities were selfish and arrogant. He did allow the church to do a few good things in the series, like in the first season where there was a priest able to actually make Holy Water.

The evil bishop turned into a vessel for hellspawn was actually more redeemable in Gods eyes than the man himself.

I suppose it could be a "works in mysterious ways" situation, given that it ends up wiping out most of Carmella and Dracula's armies.

The Castlevania series has consistently had "Holy" as just another element, which some enemies could make use of.

My guess is that consecration is more of a ritual that taps into god (if such an entity exists)'s power than actively calling on their intervention. Sort of in the same way that only humans can apparently reach into hell (or so Death claims) and be devil forgers.

Night Creatures are not inherently evil, since some just spawn from wild magic when forgemasters aren’t using corpses to summon damned souls from hell.

Most are for the latter reason, of course. But even Isaac points out to Bugseyes they can be more than evil monsters.

I'm really wondering how Maria will be handled in this.

Her whole thing is little girl in a pink dress who beats up all the fucking monsters.

That's not quite as entertaining in America as it is in Japan, but played right it could be very entertaining.

Of course, it's possible they'll skip her younger years and jump straight to 17 year old Maria from SOTN. Like, amalgamate his older and younger selves, with Maria having the former's appearance, but playing the latter's Rondo role.

We'll see, but anyone got any thoughts?

I still have a few episodes left but I am severely annoyed how pointless Carmilla's plot wound up being.

Season 3 and 4 have not used their time well.

Carmilla was never a threat in the first place. Her entire personality was that she was an arrogant bitch who did a whole lot of thinking and dreaming but never put any real thought into any of her plans. Like the other members of her coven said, Carmilla is the schemer but they are the ones that actually make it happen. If Dracula had been thinking clearly in Season 2 he probably would have ripped her throat out at the earliest opportunity.

Yeah even in Season 2 it was clear her attempted coup was never going to work, but shes smarmy enough to think her grand ideas will work.

We actually saw her vampire master I recall in one brief scene with his death, and he was as ugly as he was frail looking, so that should put into perspective how hard overthrowing him was for her.

[up]x4 There is some cache for having an innocent young witch in troubled times just coming into her powers being the center of the plots of the creatures of the night the ordinary folk that fear her.

I do hope her powers are still summoning animals, because that can be a great thing to watch animated.

She was an enemy for Isaac and Hector, not the heroes. I do think we needed another season to better flesh things out, but you can see it was their arc as a beef with a Vampire who personally betrayed Dracula.
