Carl is curious about the places that Bruno described, so he asks Bruno for more information.
"Well, let's see," says Bruno. "Sweet Land is the land of sweet dreams, obviously. The creatures there are all cute and lovable... And Weird Land is the land of weird dreams. The creatures there are just... bizarre. And of course, the appearance of each land reflects what kind of dreams happen there."
Carl wants to know more about Queen Oneira.
"Queen Oneira rules over all the Dream Lands. She also controls the process of human sleep. Like I said, she'll know why you're stuck here, and fix it. Of course, getting there won't be easy..."

Carl asks why it won't be easy.
"OOH!" says Grimaldi. "Can I tell him?" "Of course," says Bruno. "In this case, you're right to scare him."
"YES!" Grimaldi gets up and stands with his back to the fireplace.
"You'd better beware, Carl, for not all the nightmare creatures are like us! Some, like us, just like to scare humans, no real harm done. But others do much, much worse. Ever had a dream where some monster attacked or killed you? That was one of them."
"Of course, even some of the violent ones have some restraint, some morals. But there's one in particular we don't like. He's the most sadistic, vile, heartless monster in all the Dream Lands. They call him... Mr. Shadow..."
Will Carl ask for more information, or is he ready to leave?

Carl is terrified yet intrigued by Mr. Shadow. He asks Grimaldi to tell him more about him.
"Again, I don't understand that reference, but if ten is the most evil option, then I'd say eleven. He's as evil as can be. He takes glee in finding new ways to attack or murder every human who has the misfortune of meeting him. Although he's literally just a shadow, and he can't touch people directly, he has his ways."
"But the thing is, whenever he kills someone, since they're only sleeping, they immediately wake up and are sent back to your world. But since you can't go back, if he were to catch you..." Bruno shudders. So does Carl.
Up To Eleven is one of my favorite tropes, so I'm glad I got a chance to use it!

After hearing that, Carl is way too scared to go off on his own. He asks Bruno and Grimaldi if they will go with him to Queen Oneira's castle.
"We can absolutely help you get through Bad Land! ...But I don't think we'll be able to go into the castle with you..."
Carl asks Bruno why not.
"Well, considering that our job is to scare humans... we nightmare creatures don't exactly have a good reputation with the other dream creatures."

Do you need to eat in Dream Land?

Carl suspects that there may have been some incident in the past that caused nightmare creatures to be looked down upon. He asks Bruno if this is the case.
Bruno pauses to think before speaking. "...I don't believe so. Queen Oneira will know. One thing I can tell you, though - I think it's not Oneira herself who dislikes us - she created all the dream creatures, after all. I think it's the other dream creatures who hate and fear us. Sadly, I find it hard to blame them..."

Carl notices how disheartened Bruno is, and tries to cheer him up, saying that maybe this adventure will help cast nightmare creatures in a more positive light.
"YEAH!" says Grimaldi. "When everyone sees that we saved your life, they'll surely realize we're not all bad!" "Maybe..." Bruno replies.

Carl believes he should get ready to leave. He thanks Bruno and Grimaldi for sharing their pancakes, and, knowing that he'll probably need to eat later on, puts some in his pants (yes, he does realize how odd it is, but where else is he going to put them?)
Anything else Carl should do before he leaves with Bruno and Grimaldi?

So, by "see through shadows" you mean that no matter where he is, he can see and talk to anyone in any dark place?
Carl wonders if Mr. Shadow has some sort of psychic powers that allow him to see those in the dark. He asks Bruno.
"I don't think so. Although I will say that, as a literal shadow, he is good at hiding in the dark. We'd better be careful."

After hearing all this, Carl is ready to hit the road. He tells this to Bruno and Grimaldi. They agree, and our three heroes step outside the cave.
There is very little around. The area is mostly surrounded by trees, and there are some branches on the ground, some bigger than others. There is only a single path forwards.

Realizing that he may need a weapon, and following the words of Theodore Roosevelt, Carl decides to carry a big stick.
After looking around a little, he finds one that's big enough to be effective, but small enough for him to carry. He puts it in his pants inventory.
"Good idea," says Bruno.

Carl grabs two sticks, and using the knowledge he has gained from TV, rubs them together, causing one to catch fire, but only at one end. Good thing that in this case, TV logic works in the dream world!
"Is that fire?" says Grimaldi. "Oh, it's so cool! I wanna touch it!" "I wouldn't do that if I were you," says Bruno.
Carl puts the torch in his inventory. He doesn't really need it at the moment.

Noted. Carl tries to step around the sticks. Grimaldi sees Carl doing this, and starts doing it too. Bruno is so big that he can't avoid the sticks, but his plushy body muffles the sound of their snapping.
Eventually, the trail opens up into a wide area. There is a river in front of our heroes, and two paths, one going left, and one going right.
Before any of them can react, a dragon rises up from the river. He looks upset about something.

Carl is curious about Bruno's seam-splitting-and-fixing ability, so he asks him about it. "I don't really understand how it works . Magic, I guess. But it's pretty cool. Not only do I use it to eat, I can actually store things inside my body! Heh, I could probably fit a whole human in there!"
Bruno realizes that Carl is horrified. "N-Not that I would!"
> Just cut straight to the point. How do you leave the Bad Lands?
After an awkward silence, Grimaldi speaks up. "We need to figure out what to do." "You're right," says Bruno.
Carl and Grimaldi tell Bruno everything that Grimaldi told Carl earlier. Bruno thinks for a minute before speaking.
"Okay. So, something woke you up, but for some reason, you didn't get transported back to your world. There are three dream lands: Bad Land, Sweet Land, and Weird Land. The entire Dream Land is shaped like a giant circle, split into thirds. In the middle of the circle is Queen Oneira's castle. She is in charge of controlling humans' sleep. If anyone can help you, she can. We must go through Bad Land to get to her castle."
"There is more that I want to tell you, but I suppose I can tell you on the way. Anything you'd like to do before we leave?"
