Not much a fan of the Green Goblin's look, admittedly.

Here's a slightly longer version of that trailer:

The voice of the Goblin King sounds like Vulture's more than Norman's, so I'm hoping he's just an impostor and we'll get to see a proper Green Goblin with a better design than a Hobgoblin recolor.

Speaking of Goblins, glad that it looks like Harry's back.

Just hope it isn't to turn him against Peter or something, because I like the whole "superhero alongside Peter" dynamic.

...Actually, considering that the Goblins are using flight tech, and I feel like one of their designs was from the Wave Riders, maybe it is the Vulture.

I'm not sure who the Green Goblin/Goblin King is. Man having cel shading would really warm people up to the design.

Odds are Norman's alive. Between the comics and every show he's been in, it'd be a surprise if he wasn't at this point. Or it could be Harry, the trailer looked like it was hyping him up to be Peter's number two but "tensions building in secret", but the fact they don't even him a spotlight and a trailer kinda scare me.

Then again, there are allegedly other people in the comics who've held the Green Goblin title. And alternatively, it could be an established character taking on a new identity.

At least its a four parter with a prelude so this should be fun.

Watched the recent episodes:

  • Still missed Cloak & Dagger due to a botched recording, but think I have the gist of the episode's events.
  • Venom was suitably creepier, and I like the fact that it's constantly evolving. It conspicuously doesn't end on some sort of Sequel Hook, though, which I find odd (like a piece of Venom could slither away or something), given Season 3 is focused on it.
  • Disliked Mr. Negative's portrayal, mostly due to seeming to be a generic villain. Maybe I just unreasonably hyped himself.
  • Regent was just bland, and kind of feels like an Avengers level threat shoehorned into the show; which isn't helped by Regent constantly dismissing Spider-Man as not worth his time.

Regent wants to kill the Avengers, but he has some form of weird respect for Spiderman. That's why Peter's surprised when he starts quipping at one point.

That Spiderman kept interfering just means he had to take care of him to resolve his vengeance.

Agree he was bland too. He was too impersonal a villain.

I had a hard time telling what Regent was saying due to his voice's heavy modulation and the subtitles not working correctly, so that's probably why I can't really remember he was quipping.

And I only watched that episode maybe about an hour ago.

The Avengers arrested his father, who's serving a life sentence. Now if they went into why, I'd like him a bit more. Still, if a eh character in a two parter gives everyone else an more time and development, than he serves a good enough trigger for it.

Didn't Regent lose his family due to a superhuman attack, and that's why he resents other superhumans (especially the Avengers)? It's not great or original, but would've been a bit better.

I wasn't a fan of the symbiote itself becoming a proper villain. Its dynamic with Eddie is one of Venom's strongest traits, and getting rid of that just makes the symbiote into a boring monster. And I didn't really like how it woke up just because Miles and Peter happened to pass by the building.

That's fair. I admit that one of the drawbacks of the Symbiote doing that is that runs the risk of Eddie basically just being forgotten about.

Which, sadly, is a real possibility, considering the series' track record with how underdeveloped most of the Rogues Gallery is beyond most of the main villains.

Saw a clip from "Goblin War Part One" where Gwen and Anya reveal to Spidey they think Peter is the Goblin King.

That is the kind of plot point I wish the comics could have done with a combination of the Superior fall-out and the Parker Industries angle. People assuming Peter's behaviour led him down more sinister paths, rather than just dismiss him as a jerk-off.

Now might be the time to reveal you identity Peter...

...or maybe have Miles explain things.

[up][up] I just found that clip lol. I'm interesting in seeing how they came to that conclusion though. If that's part of the reason Anya and Gwen were being cold to him back in the Cellar two-parter, then sure, I'll accept that. But Allistair actually makes sense as a suspect (he's got the Spider Slayer armor, him and his dad both want revenge against Norman and could go after Harry by proxy, and has enough connections amongst the villains)...though I'm strecthing, and its probably Norman.

So, no one's watching the Goblin War event?

So far, it's alright. I can't believe I actually missed Harry by now when I found him so obnoxious in season one. Gwen and Anya seem to have taken the title for the most obnoxious characters, though. First thinking Peter was a Goblin because he was rude when Otto took over him and now they have a one-side rivalry with Spider-Man? Why? All the drama between them, Peter, Harry, and Otto feels contrived, but at least Harry has a valid reason to distrust Otto.

Then we finally get two big reveals: whatever Norman left for Harry and the Goblin King. I thought making it a giant mech was underwhelming, especially since it doesn't seem like anything Norman might work on. I guess it fits with Harry's propensity for making guns. The latter reveal was kind of lame, since Adrian Toomes is one of the show's blandest villains, and this doesn't change anything. The one relief is that there's a strong chance he won't be the show's Green Goblin, so Norman can always return with a better design.

Also, I was expecting a more involved Goblin War, with multiple factions and more characters than just Smythe and Electro. Not even Jack O'Lantern is involved?

I don't see how much of a difference that makes if the ultimate reveal is both predictable and lacking any tension or emotional weight.

Peter should really just tell Gwen and Anya what's going on.

I mean, they think he's a goblin. That's not a good thing.

I’m enjoying it, but Gwen is kinda being the rude one while Anya was willing to actually work with Spidey or at least contact him. And while Gwen is admittedly being a bit douchey, watching her tap into her inner Spidey is kinda adorable. Harry being upset about Otto is a mixed bag for me. On one hand, Otto is the reason why he and Peter had TWO fallouts, brainwashed his classmates into trying to kill him, and had Peter nearly murder him, but Otto still never realized Norman set him up to fail when he was first a hero and Norman was stealing Harry’s tech for his own means.

Admittedly I should’ve seen Toomes coming cuz there’s no way Norman was easily going to be revived like that. After Otto, he was the second villain this season with a lot of loose ends to tie up, and thinking about it, all the Spiders cleaned up most of the crime in the city so him taking advantage of the situation ain’t too farfetched. It’s really ironic the Wake Riders of all people (damn showboats) were the main henchmen hiding in the shadows.

Speaking of which, if Toomes got Electro out of the Cellar, does that mean he convinced Regent to let her go? Considering Regent’s technically an anti villain who wants revenge on those he felt wronged him, either Toomes convinced Regent he was also trying to do the same, Toomes broke into the cellar before the two parter and fought Regent, or after Regent was arrested, Toomes spent the later half building up generals for the Goblin Nation.

[up] Regarding the reveal and the emotional, if you look back on the Wake Riders episodes, Adrian’s not too different from Otto in that regard and Peter/Spidey also offered him a chance at redemption, only to watch it disappear. Looking at this from a character analysis, Adrian’s current status is a deviation of Otto’s plan, only more discreet. Predictable, yeah, but on a character dynamic basis, there’s a lot to unpack.

  • He’s was Norman’s top enforcer and the only one of his generals that was rationally sane and didn’t let his pride overtake him that much compared to Norman. All the while he took advantage of Harry’s naviety as a newcomer and was swiping gear and his tech while also Kick the Dog just emotionally screwing Harry over by making him feel guilty.
  • Peter most likely feels guilty because he was close to helping Toomes stop the Wake Riders who stole his tech in the first place, and his own desire for acceptance back when Jonah was giving him a hard time isn’t dissimilar from what he went through.
  • Heck, Otto brainwashed him and used him like a puppet for his Sinister Five/Six and now Adrian’s got the upper hand on him in terms of tech and in numbers.

You can argue tension sure, but considering he was doing all of this in the background while playing the long game in the shadows due to the all the villain wars, Gwen and Anya are currently MIA, and Harry’s been KO ed, and it took four heroes to take down a small faction, there’s a argument against to that to be had.

Crossbones being part of the Goblin Nation seems weird. Seems small time for someone that ran with Hydra.

[up] Damnit, people got the episode already? Y'all got links cuz I'm back in a place where I can watch Disney XD on tv but it ain't airing until 9.

True, but Hydra's been pretty damn weird with the show (wait, is AI Ms technically a part of HYDRA or does that depend on the community), but I can see Crossbones joining up to wanting revenge. Last time he was in the show, Spidey led Black Widow, Spider-Gwen, and a bunch of superpowered normies against him and his goons. To him, that's a pretty embarrassing and cheap loss.

I thought the Goblin Nation thing was just going to be thugs with Hobgoblin gear working for the Goblin King. So, seeing multiple factions with different abilities work for numerous underbosses was neat.It brought back some of the rival gang aspect of that arc, especially when Electro and Crossbones's factions go at each other.

Also, I'm glad Peter and Harry actually argued a bit and they didn't just completely bury the hatchet. They both made some solid points, and for once, the conflict didn't feel contrived, which is usually a big flaw in this series. Peter STILL not revealing his secret to Gwen and Anya? Now THAT is contrived and nonsensical.

Yeah...I can't get excited with Toomes piloting a giant mech as the final boss of the season. Seems so underwhelming in a season with Venom, Doc Ock, AIM, and Regent as threats.
