I have to admit that I still like the "In the bad ending of Sonic 2 for the Game Gear Tails died" theory. Even if Tails is my favorite character it's interesting that the music during the credits is so somber and Tails is nowhere to be found.
It also annoys me that people say it can't be possible because both Sonic and Tails are in the stars in the good ending. It's not a sign that both of them are dead; it's a sign that their friendship is immortalized (At least IMO).
Tails being in the stars alone can symbolize his death or Sonic's vow to find him.
Do I absolutely believe this all happened in the bad ending? Not necessarily, but it's still a neat story idea.

This is mine: The animal people are the result of a space virus containing the DNA of an alien race (an Amazing Technicolor Population with Noodle Limbs and Conjoined Eyes and all that) fusing with the wildlife of Earth (that's what it's called in the game canon). This slightly damaged the DNA system of these animals, giving some of them superpowers. On other planets, the virus has fused with birds (forming the babylonians) and plants (becoming the "seedrians" from Sonic X).
