Jojo: When your manga has been running for longer than God and even a line as innocuous as "Hey, Japan. When are we going? I'll come with" counts as a reference.

Seriously, I had to deal with a JoJo reference/homage event in a game my company runs recently, and it was so annoying. Literally every line was a reference to obscure moments in chapters from Part 1 all the way up to Part 6.

I hate to admit it, but everything is a Jo Jo reference nowadays.

Which reminds me, even if it's obscure from the majority of the fanbase, even a very vague reference is still considered as a Shout-Out right?

Just askin' because Shout-Out, Expy and Captain Ersatz are the tropes that I frequently love to come across in any media, yet I become disappointed in myself when I actually have to research a lot just to understand what is being referenced.

I'm talking about potholed work names on Shout-Out entries which I mostly see in this site. In a lot of the articles I came across, one just linked a quote to another page and that's it - almost a zero-context example, vague, and written as though the audience already understood the reference.

I find that Expy and Captain Ersatz are tropes that get misapplied a lot; people like to attach them to any passing resemblance between characters from different works. For those two tropes, explanation of the connection between the work being referenced and the work doing the referencing seems required. (I am notably finicky about this stuff, admittedly. If you squint hard enough, anything can start to look like a reference.)

Some tropers get similarly over-enthusiastic when it comes to declaring x vague resemblance to be a Shout-Out to y work. In the case of actual quotations, though, 'this is a quote from [work]' is usually the context, in which case a pothole is just convenient shorthand.

Assuming I'm parsing your question correctly, anyhow.

@Dante: At this point, I assume that almost every single line of JoJo is considered Memetic Mutation by the Japanese fanbase, and I'm not even kidding. Depending on the specific way a line is written, even changing one letter can make a sentence into a reference (or, like with the Kiara example, just how a sentence is ordered, even if it's not an unusual format at all).

Yeah, true, I guess. I suppose it's pretty similar to how typing "Hello there!" will instantly get people started on that scene if they know what you're talking about.

That is the most boring artwork possible. Somehow a silhouette would be more interesting than that. Rather than staying in my memory, that image has negated an equal number of neurons in my brain due to how boring it is.

Related to that new artwork for Parvati, she's been brainwashed to think she's Lady Kasuga and Gordolf's brainwashed to think he's one of the Tokugawas.

So I guess Kama's 3rd Ascension and his NP is meant to be Ananga, which is Kama after he got incinerated by Shiva, but was allowed to live in disembodied form across the cosmos.
