Zelda doesn't move as much merchandise as the others.

Yeah, Zelda's mostly video games with the occasional other thing thrown in the mix.

All of those top franchises have games, shows, toys, books, and comics, with huge multi-demographic appeal. Your mom knows Pikachu, but she doesn't know Link.

If Nintendo wants to keep Link a silent protagonist that may also work against a movie.

I think they could make Link work as quiet rather than completely silent. Like in Mad Max: Fury Road, Max says barely a dozen words outside of the narration.

I’m remembering that fanfic I came across once where Link only spoke in grunts and yells yet everyone could understand him. tongue

It's not impossible, yeah. At any rate, there doesn't seem to be a particular push for a Zelda film right now.

Nintendo should follow up on Detective Pikachu by producing films for Zelda, Mario, Star Fox, and Metroid after this.

And then blindside everyone by bringing it all together for the live-action Super Smash Bros crossover event. HAH! YOU THOUGHT IT WASN'T A CINEMATIC UNIVERSE KNOCKOFF AND YOU WERE WRONG.

With regards to writing Link, I think pairing him up with a faerie helps a lot. Link could be a man of few words with Navi or Tatl or whoever doing most of the talking. Then, on the few occasions Link does speak, it's meaningful.

So reverse Tinkerbell?

"What's that Link your saying you need to find the master sword?"

"hey listen!"

Something like that, yeah. Navi (or whichever faerie) would do a lot of the heavy lifting in speaking for the two in scenes where they're interacting with the other characters. For Link's actor, you'd want to get someone who can do a great job of acting through expression. But Link would have dialogue here and there, he just wouldn't be conversational.

I'd want to really emphasize the relationship between Link and his faerie partner. Epic Platonic Life-Partners bromance at the heart of the film.

EDIT: Ooh, the film could be an adaptation of Skyward Sword, with Fi as the "faerie" partner in question. I think the forging of the Master Sword and the great battle against Demise would be a good jumping-on point for the first entry in a film franchise.

There could be a post-credits scene that replays Demise's dying curse that his hatred will linger forever. And, like, Demise fades into darkness as he speaks, leaving only his glowing red eyes that flicker. But in the post-credits scene, the flickering flame in his eyes fades into the red eyes of a powerful Gerudo man stepping through the doors of Hyrule Castle to attend a royal audience.

Foreshadowing the next movie to the casual moviegoers and being one of those big "HOLY SHIT I KNOW THAT CHARACTER" cliffhangers for the dedicated fans.

A Legend of Zelda movie or animated series would likely be more like Samurai Jack, something that relies on visuals and stuff for storytelling instead of dialogue.

[up][up] You're right, Skyward Sword might be a good start for a Zelda film series. In addition to the fact that it's the first in the timeline, the biggest problems in the game (the controls, the small overworld, Fi constantly bugging you) would largely be irrelevant in a movie.

Though my instinct is still to do a completely original story, which helps dodge around the problem that video games come with what a movie would consider a horrific amount of filler.

I think a Legend of Zelda movie should focus on one of the smaller spin-off games, like Detective Pikachu is. Maybe adapting content from one of the manga versions of one of the games.

Yeah, the manga versions give everyone a lot more personality.

I think they'd be better as animated movies, though.

You know I can just see Zelda being the main character and Link become side character solely because her name is in the title and she can speak, which sort of makes sense

Or don't have Link and focus entirely on Zelda's character

Just as long as ANY of the Metroid games that aren't Other M are picked as the Metroid Movie.

And not just because it sucked, but because it would be completely incoherent to anyone who wasn't a Metroid fan. Adapt the manga instead. Or Zero Mission, with bits of the manga stapled onto the front. We really only need 'Ridley murdered Samus's parents, chozo adopted her, Ridley murdered her ADOPTED parents, Mother Brain is evil, magic floating space jellyfish'

They wouldn't adapt any Metroid game without giving an origin story. Mario doesn't really have an origin story, and Zelda keeps coming up with new ones, but Metroid does have a natural beginning, and I see no reason why anyone would make a film that doesn't include it.

My greatest fear for a Metroid adaptation would be that Samus wouldn't have her suit until the third act, like so many adaptations do these days. A Metroid adaptation should be about Samus already being a semi-experienced bounty hunter, but still green enough that the movie covers her first huge mission. Her backstory can be told via flashback.
