Oh neat, didn't know he was able to have his hair changed. I'm not a huge fan of full helmets anyway.

Guess I'll start playing then!!!

TFW you die on the first guy.

EDIT: Okay beat the first boss and did the tuorial, the stance system is really cool and I'm digging the game so far. I couldn't decide between the kusurigama and tonfa, as both are some of my favorite weapons ut I went with the kusurigama and odachi, though TBH I'm not sure if it'll be too big a deal. I want to try out every weapon eventually, but the stances make them fun to explore and use.

Watching limbs get pulverized with the Kusurigama is awesome lol. Reminds me of Ninja gaiden 2.

I went through the entire game with an axe and a sword. I figured I'd try the other weapons eventually but by the time I had mastered the axe the game was basically statistically enforcing me to stick with that and a katana.

If you're swinging around Tonfa and Odachi that means you got the DLC? Gud.

This makes me want to take on lady Maria again. I wonder if I should bother when I'm rusty though.

I got the complete edition, which includes the DLC I guess.

When I said first boss, I meant the first yokai guy. I thought he was a boss but nah just an elite mook. He could kill me in like 2 hits so I got the impression he was a boss. Seems like you can die pretty quickly, at least early game.

Now the first actual boss, the ball flail oni, kicked my butt. I was having some real trouble with him because again he could kill me in like 2 hits and it felt like I was barely chipping at him away with either weapon. Then I learned how to use living weapon or whatever and decimated him haha. Idk that mechanic feels a bit OP? I actually really like the combat otherwise, the stance system adds some nice depth and learning different moves is great too. Gonna play some more tonight.

Do not. Be afraid. To abuse the hell out of anything that works.

Nioh is not afraid to drink your tears and punch you in the gut when it senses vulnerability. Don't play fair.

If you plan on getting any Onmyoji magic the Sloth Talisman is really effective against bosses until you get to the DLC.

If you die with tons of Amrita use a summoning candle to get it back. They ain't common, but they're a decent Anti-Frustration Feature if used sparingly.

The blacksmith has tons of options to alter your weapons. It's one of those things you feel like you need a strategy guide open in your lap to make the most use of.

One really effective trick is to afflict an enemy with two elemental ailments at once. Using a elemental talisman and then a living weapon of a different element is usually how I do it. Doing so automatically applies the "Confusion" element on top of the others which completely freaking discombobulates them.

Speaking of elements, earth is useless against Yokai.

I have been on a break from this game and meaning to get back on it. Think I'm currently stuck at the boss right after the mothman one. But that might be because I changed up my stats and stuff trying to just get all of those expertise levels up for more titles and fame points and those dojo missions that unlock new skills.

Initially though, I was having a blast with Kusarigama, Onmyo and Ninjutsu. I was using dual katanas first but transitioned to tonfas as they had good stat synergy with kusarigama.

This game does kind of encourage you to try everything, as just using different weapons alone grants samurai skill points, which can be used for any weapon and esepcailly those skill shared across all weapons, like the Ki Pulse ones.

And yeah, just like Dark Souls; if you're going at it alone, there is no such thing as "cheese" or "cheap" only things that work better than others.

And yes, once you obtain a certain ceramic, you'll be able to unlock "disguises" based on the other characters. Your armour will not be shown as these character models seem to lack alternatives, but your weapons appear as normal.

Thanks, really good info here.

So these blood phantom things based off other players, they're like ghost data of them located where they last died or something? They seem pretty easy so far

Yeah. You die in the game, and then you're sent to other player's worlds so they can kill you again. They're generally easy fights because you get to face them on your terms.

It's a great way to get equipment, since they can drop whatever the player was wearing. Most of the players will eventually degenerate into wearing nothing but the "Warrior of the West" gear though. [lol]

Some of the revenants are placed by the devs though. They have funny names.

That's pretty funny.

I didn't know this game had a bestiary. Awesome, I love those.

Anyway I beat the 2nd boss, the black tongue lady. I found her easier than the ball chain guy and beat her first try, although just barely! I replayed the level and beat her more easily that time. The yoki guys or whatever are still kind of a pain, like I'm killing them easier but they deal ludicrous damage and the axe ones can still 2-shot me.

I've been playing with the tonfas now and they're quite fun. I gotta say the katana is pretty cool too for the game's token vanilla weapon. so far the kusurigama is still my fave though and the most reliable, though the odachi seems to work best against humans.

Remember Ki Pulse to purify Yokai auras. As long as a Yokai stands within their aura, they do not lose Ki. At all.

Oh, try to hit Yoki in the head. Even melee attacks work. You'll cut off their horns and instantly stun them.

If Ki Pulse seems hard to pull off, use Salt.

Good tips, though at this point the yoki guys aren't too big an issue anymore.

Beat the Nue boss, took two attempts but he wasn't too hard at all as long as you're not up in his face. I used ninja tools and the K-gama's high stance heavy attack.

the following stage boss I beat first try but it was a fun fight, Nice music too.

But the boss for the optional mission that follows...holy crap. I easily must have gotten killed at least 20 times. Iai fighters in these sorts of games are always tough and this one's no different, didn't help that he could actually kill me instantly if he caught me mid-dodge. The freakin dog was really annoying too. I managed to beat him by using the axe out of desperation, which I never touched before. Turns out high stance axe is actually pretty good against him. I might have to start using it more.

Gotta say, this game is exceeding expectations.

Muneshige still best boy. I've said it already, but in the confusing mess that is the narration of this game to someone who isn't familiar to the historical period, this guy stands out by how the gameplay chracterizes him rather than the plot.

Yeah I only recognize some of these figures due to cultural osmosis via all the Japanese games and anime which often utilized these figures.

Granted the story so far iseasier to follow than soulsborne lol, at least so far.

UGH I just did what is probably the low point of the game thus far: umi bozu. The level was bad enough with all the pitfalls but man what an awful boss. The insta kill laser is really cheap, it takes forever to kill and there's pitfalls surrounding the arena making it easy to get pushed into. While I was able to learn its pattern eventually(and didn't use the flames, seems like keeping them on prevents it from making flunkies 2nd phase), the fight felt too long and it just isn't an enjoyable fight at all. That's one mission I'm not going to replay lol.

Small update, just beat yuki onna, 2nd try. She wasn't nearly as hard as I was lead to believe, much like Nue she's easier if you keep your distance(I took out most of her health using bombs/kunai/cannon + the K-gama's high stance heavy attack) and it lets you avoid her wicked dash attack too. I found her ice missiles/needles her most dangerous move since they can be a bit tricky to avoid.

The axe is amazing, thing is a BEAST and rips apart humanoid enemies due to the obscene stamina damage it deals and the tracking of the high stance. I find myself using it more than the odachi now.

for catharsis factor I went back to munshige and kicked his butt this time. Turns out he killed me 39 times before, more than any other boss. It felt good to be able to whoop him with little trouble after all the suffering he put me through before.

I feel a lot stronger now, and the game feels like it's gotten easier, though no less enjoyable. I remember eraly game the grey yokai portals would be scary, but now I walk up and can usually handle them well.

The spider level was pretty cool, and the boss being easier than umi helps, though she killed me once as her waif squash caught me by surprise first attempt.

This game reminds me of Otogi a lot due to all the yokai and general setting. I feel the designers were Fromsoft fans and not just souls ones. Then again, Fromsoft did take inspiration from Ninja Gaiden with Ninja Blade so maybe it goes both ways?

Also I kinda like william, his accent is nice. I also like the spirit guardian cutscenes, as the presentation is cool. The bat one is one of my faves although I wish his design was better. He's pretty underwhelming looking compared to some of the flashier ones.

Hm, that trailer seems to confirm the rumours about a character creator, since we had both male and female playable characters in there.

The closed alpha should be out today for people that got a message in their Playstation account inbox. I'll be trying it next week when I get back home from my moms place, and I shoul dhave 3 days to try it out.

An Open Alpha and some more beta's later would be nice, too.

Apologies for the thread necro, but we have a trailer from the Tokyo Game Show:

I really like the youkai designs in this game. The Ushi-Oni (at least, I'm fairly sure it's an Ushi-Oni) looks really good in particular.
