A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Mass Effect 2 Writer Confirms Jack Was Originally Pansexual
What does that have to do with the thread?
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Seems perfectly suitable for the thread considering we’ve had links here before of “one woman stars in this movie.”
Speaking of King, here is a review of her recent film One Night in Miami.
That’s an Amazon Prime exclusive film. I imagine that SNL is a massive platform to promote it.
I've also heard affection jabs about the same SNL casting announcement regarding Dan Levy and Phoebe Bridgers as "a win for the gays" (he is gay and she is bi).

Earlier this month Disney hired cosplayer and podcaster Krystina Arielle to be the host of their new web series for Star Wars: The High Republic. Unfortunately, less than a week in, Arielle has been subject to constant racist harassment, much of it funneled by the rag Bounding Into Comics.
Following a fan counter-movement to support Arielle amidst her mistreatment, the Star Wars Twitter account put out a statement in support of her. However, some fans are calling it too little too late after their radio silence about the treatment of John Boyega and Kelly Tran.
Particularly baffling is Twitter’s response, which is to give her a verification check but little real action towards reducing the harassment itself.
I'm with that one guy who said don't censor their names.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. So Disney's not allowed to learn a lesson about sticking up for their actors when they are unfairly harassed?
If they had said nothing, these same people would have still called them out.
The star wars fanbase are notoriously whinny. They complain about everything.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."They are also right-partisan as all hell. Always preferring the fascist and fascist coded elements and throwing bitchfits whenever the always political moves are "getting political"
People are mad at Disney for saying one thing and doing another. This statement doesn't proved they learned anything as they made similar statements about John and Kelly but still marginalized them in the films. We haven't seen any amends made to John, Kelly, or anyone that suffered harassment. If anything they doubled down on appeasing racists to make extra money.

It's great that they congratulated Kelly Marie Tran on her birthday, but all the same it's appalling that they just ignored James Earl Jones on his at the same time. I don't think they even released an apology on it, or at least I haven't been able to find one.
That, along the treatment of Alan Dean Foster, which is just plain a dick move, only sends the message, intended or not, that they couldn't care less about the forebearers and only are focused on the now, here and beyond.

The closest thing Disney has offered Kelly Marie Tran as a make good is the lead role in Raya and the Last Dragon, and well...at least they’re keeping her employed.
Boyega meanwhile, I don’t think that bridge will ever be mended. He may have hated the typecasting, but at least Harrison Ford came back to film more Star Wars stuff. Boyega? I still expect a tell-all from him when the NDA’s fully expire.
"Let the past die, kill it if you have to".
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
God help me, but that line almost seems to have been written with a meta purpose in mind.
That line is without doubt my single favorite moment in the entire ST. And I’m not even saying that in a Damned by Faint Praise sense, I just genuinely really like the line
PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyBut you aren't supposed to be agree with it. Or maybe you are. I don't know anymore
In episode VIII, no, but then JJ had Rey and Ben literally kill the past, so who knows.
One of those things where the sequel movies can't agree among themselves, probably.
We really shouldn't take the psycho edgelord that was believed at this point to be a school shooter seriously. But this era is jerked around so much in contradictory directions it leaves you feeling like a bobblehead toy.
Wake me up at your own risk.JJ isn't great with consistent themes among his own movies, much less someone else.
I enjoyed RotS well enough, but JJ is not great at endings and doesn't play well with others. He shouldn't have been the one tapped to finish off the trilogy. Who did they have before they brought him back? I know the original plan was a different director for all three.
Colin Trevorrow, but he sit the bed with Book of Henry and got booted.
The High Republic host argument is the perfect "whataboutism" argument for the people who dislike Disney Star Wars. If they didn't defend her, Disney agrees! She needs to go! But since they did defend her, they get to play "what about Boyega? What about Tran?" and still attack her. Either way, they get to play victim, shame Disney, and go after this woman.
The fans are completely right for calling out execs for being too little, too late.
It’s nice that the SW execs are changing and finally standing up to harassment, but the hurt is still there and a tweet means little to nothing. It’s not like they’re losing anything. There’s no acknowledgement of how they failed people of color in the past or their complicity regarding the harassment. They just said “Bullying. Knock it off.”
Also, they had five years to stick up for JB, but they made surely to wait until after the ST was over so they wouldn’t lose any money. That’s like watching your friend get jumped and doing nothing about it, but then telling them that you have their back.
So yeah, not impressed. Happy for my good sis, Krystina, though.
