TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

I actually like the changes made. Crucify me. -shrug-

At the moment, I think the only thing I need right now is for the forum buttons to be doubled on the bottom of the page again, but I'm sure people have already brought that up elsewhere so I'll just wait for it to be a thing.

But, yeah, it's nice. Very pretty, feels much more in tune with the modern web but still keeps the original vibe mostly intact. Good luck ironing out the kinks, y'all.

oh, that's why I need this binary mind //

"TV Tropes has always been (teal) blue. It's like a badge of identity."

This 1000 times. It just doesn't feel like Tv Tropes anymore.

Neat, night vision now properly shows what page you're on in threads. I don't actually have a problem with the bright normal design, so I don't use night vision that much, but it is certainly easier on the eyes. Well, other than some things like the mod pink posts being too bright, and the OP post at the top of each page also being very bright. There are some other things that don't change colours consistently. But other than those things, it's an improvement over the previous night vision. I think, anyway.

Night Vision feels more drab to me. It used to be a cool blue and black, but now everything is gray, and that's kinda sad.

Another thing: I feel like the edit box is too BIG. I don't like having to scroll the page itself to find things sometimes (and yeah, I know, Ctrl+F, but I don't always use that).

Other than that though, since I know where everything I know I'm going to use is, the layout works for me, and I like how when you look at the history, the changes are highlighted (since I have played games of "What did this troper change?" before).

Okay, I was going to get really mad at the fact that the toolbar was on the right side again, with no obvious way of having it on the left side. note

...Until I looked at my profile page, and saw the setting to change it there, along with the extremely helpful character count for the signature. [tup] Other note

"We won't respond to 'its like [other site]' as a valid criticism"

No, that's not what anybody said. The problem is that it looks like EVERY other site. All of them. It follows the trends and cliches - actually, you could say it's following every popular web design trope. It's flat, corporate and sterile. It does not feel like the punk, originality-encouraging site that tv tropes is.

I went on a work's Trivia page and all the tropes are marked as being YMMV, though they weren't marked such before the switch to 1.3.

Thanks, Fighteer. Evidently my avatar or whatever is supposed to be to the right of the Search is invisible, though I can still click it to bring down the dropdown. I didn't realize that there's some sort of button there until I got the red notification there.

This new look sucks. Let's get that out of the way right now. My all-time favorite site ruined. I'll be spending a lot less time here, which is a good thing because it'll free up my time to look for another site that I will hopefully enjoy just as much as I USED to enjoy this one.

If it ain't broke............................................................sigh.

It's a problem because nobody wants to feel like they're in a government-owned cubicle while researching art history and design. You can say that's just my opinion but, well, yes, it is, that's what feedback is, surprise. It's a thread about what people think about the new look, not an essay submission.

Well I'm out. If this site is here to stay, I'm just hoping that the "Preview" option when making new pages returns. And that Image Uploader gets fixed.

Thank you for re-adding the topic page indicator. That was getting bothersome.

[up][up] Both of those things are on the short list to get fixed.

[up][up][up] We are not pooh-poohing your concerns, just noting that style is a matter of opinion, and we will be in a better position to address style concerns once the critical bugs are repaired.

Let's get one thing clear, though: the old site layout is not coming back, ever, for reasons entirely beyond our preferences even if we wanted to restore it.

How did the old, broken coding affect how the site looked? Was it like a stylesheet?

Also, did any Kickstarter donators have comments about this 1.3 layout?

[up][up] The new design is dull, whereas the old one was more unique. More importantly, the search feature is broken.

Actually, not sure if this was mentioned, but the big entry at the top of the page is literally invisible except for Anxiety Tropes in Night Vision mode.

Uhhh, whoops? [lol]

The new look has started to grow on me. I still don't like how thin the average article looks, but that could just be me.

Also, is there a reason we have these buttons for the random trope/media buttons instead of the dice? The dice looked kinda cool and fit the idea, but hey.

The dice gave no indication of their function. We iterated over the random button appearances quite a bit before settling on the current ones.

@BSN: It's a style sheet issue. Will get fixed eventually.

Re-uploaded screenshot that shows no avatar or anything to the right of the Search. (The other one was a narrow image so I just uploaded a shot of the entire page and not just the header bar).

I can see where an avatar is supposed to be when I log out, but can't see anything there when I logged in. Tried in both Firefox 43.0.4 and IE 11.

[up][up]Ah, okay. Good, because I literally just noticed that now (because as other people have said, the non Night Vision mode hurts my eyes because of the White/Grey color scheme) and was like "uhhh..... this might be an issue"
