The studios taking them more seriously might have been a case of the old guard dying off I wonder. Not that I keep track of management changes in Hollywood bureacracies.

Kind of, but Hollywood also has a tendency to go for what is known to work. and remember, comic book readers are still a minority. Those who grew up on a steady diet of Saturday morning cartoons might be more openminded, but they also tend to have a very specific image of what Superhero stories are.

I am not sure...Avatar had the advantage of all the expensive IMAX sales.

I don’t think it’ll beat Avatar worldwide, but it’s likely to beat it domestically.

That would mean making 100 million more than Infinity war domestically. Yeah..I wouldn't bet on it. I wouldn't count it out, but I would also not bet on it.

Remember it is not just about how you start, it is also about how you do week to week. Avatar didn't really start out THAT great, but it had barely any drops from week to week within its run.

Well, its opening-weekend box office is predicted to be a little shy of $100 million over Infinity War already (Box Office Mojo is guessing at $345+ million, while IW had $257 mil). If that turns out to be correct, for the rest of its run it just needs to do about as well as IW.

As of its first day, it’s already $50 mil ahead of IW.

box office mojo will most likely correct the numbers up. Their data is very dependent on what the studios report, and Disney has the tendency to be careful with its predictions.

[up] It's a little bit early for definitive predictions. After the second weekend this is a different matter.

Box Office Mojo is showing an estimated $350 million for Endgame’s opening weekend.

That means that, barring a BVS-level collapse, it would be headed for over $750 mil in total domestic gross.

Globally, it already has $1.2 billion.

[up] Sure. There is no doubt that it will make 2 Billion at least. The question is how many repeated viewings there are and how many will watch it overall. Box office isn't always won on the opening weekend, you know.

[up]That is true. Second weekends are always important to consider how much the movie will make overall. On one hand, it has gotten a A+ Cinemas Score which indicates a true audience pleaser, that invites more second viewings. On the other hand, $350 million is too big of a number for people not to expect a big drop plus the other films that might compete against this film this coming month, particularly Detective Pikachu.

I fear Pikachu might get lost in the schuffle.

They need to rake in more than Infinity War for this to be considered a real profit imo.

Well, according to Box Office Mojo, Avengers: Endgame has already made $1.2 billion on its opening weekend worldwide. That's already half the box-office results of Avengers: Infinity War.

For comparisons sake, Infinity War only made $640.5 million for its opening weekend. Endgame has made almost twice the opening of Infinity War globally, and had about a 13% better opening domestically.

Infinity War didn’t open in China until after its main global opening, IIRC, so I would caution against comparing its global opening weekend to Endgame’s.

But regardless, Endgame earning more than IW is pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point.

Prepare to hear the word "Unprecedented" a lot with Endgame's take.

No piece of media in history has had this much mype.

[up][up] Sure but that's why we compare usually domestic numbers and there...let's put it this way: A lot of people were doubting that it would even be possible for ANY movie to do 300 million since there is only a limited number of screens. Turns out that movie theatres can rise to the occasion and that it is possible to make 350 million. That is a HUGE jump up, usually when a new movie breaks a record, it happens by a small margin. Endgame positively destroyed all the records it broke.

Also, while Infinity War opened in China later we already know which movie had the highest grossing opening in China, and it aint Infinity War. Endgame beat it with no trouble whatsoever.

[up][up] My guess there was that a lot of people wanted to catch up on who Carol was before they went to go see Endgame. Either that, or people might've gone to see Captain Marvel (2019) if all the Endgame showings at their local theaters sold out.

But man, two films from the same franchise holding the top two spots at the box-office on the same weekend? That's literally unheard of before.

[up]These two films holding the #1 and #2 spots also have the same character in the same universe played by the same person. Twice. When will we ever see that again outside another MCU film?
