Okay, I can safely say that this fandom's big enough to have an All Purpose Thread.

So yeah, feel free to post or talk about fanfics from the franchise about WWII Ships reincarnated into girls fighting off demonic representations of the US Navy/Themselves... Depending on what headcanon you subscribe to.

Okay. For those interested, here's the relevant bits of world building I got from the mangas and some other stuff. One of those days I will do the same for the anime and the game.

4-Koma:

Here we are shown that, before being assigned somewhere else, the Kanmusu go through a year of training before actually getting into combat.

Thay actually have to learn how to walk on water. And they will be stuck if they run out of fuel.

It's from here that people figured out the "rumor" that the deep sea fleet are "ships sunk in the past, transformed by malice" (said by Ise in chap. 2).

According to Kaga, it's actually common for the ship girls to suddenly remember things that happened to the actual ships with no warning, the effects on their behavior are, most often than not, pretty obvious (see Hibiki going full Verniy). All those times the girls turn into sobbing wrecks due to being reminded something? Dem flashbacks be nasty. We even get Kaga breaking down in tears after she noticed the fleet composition for a mission had similar circumstances to a battle with heavy casualties on their side.

Riggings are cleaned only once in a while, then repainted. Battleships, understandably, have it much harder than everybody else.

It's kind of implied that the modernization procedure only involves taking a Kanmusu's rigging and passing the useful parts along to another. Yamato and Musashi did that to help in Western Waters.

It's technically possible to have a Kanmusu use another's rigging. The difference in weight make it all but impossible for it to be even remotely practical.

Fleet practice (PVP) stops before anyone gets hurt. Repairs are not required in most cases.

Permission and/or resources for the revision of certain kanmusu is given only to those that have proven their mettle, repeatedly.

After putting together the facility for Large Ship Construction, the Admiral tried to get Taihou. Akagi and Kaga were siphoning resources from that and, when discovered, the former tried to pass it off as if she was the one just constructed (ch. 26).

Sakawa got lost near an area taken by the Abyssal fleet, and had to be rescued. That, strangely enough, was the first time the enemy (in this case, Battleship Symbiotic Hime and Seaport Hime) were shown talking in (translated) printed media. (chap. 43)

Related to the above. Kanmusu in training may be allowed to sortie in case of emergencies.

Ise figured out how to avoid torpedoes, by jumping over them as they pass.

Kanmusu are given a stipend to use with whatever they want, inside the base only. Anyone who catch 100 cockroaches gets a free meal. Aside from that, they have to cook their own meals (ch. 57).

We see I-8 preparing a suitcase for a long expedition, but she's carrying nothing during departure. Hammerspace?

Apparently, some of the "technology" used in the fleet, including the fairies used in mid battle emergency repairs, are manufactured overseas. So are the foreign kanmusu, apparently.

The events of this manga are implied happen somewhere between 2003 and 2013. When the topic of age came up and someone suggested using day of commissioning of the actual warships to determine a kanmusu's age, it was mentioned that Kongo would be almost a hundred years old (the warship Kongo being commissioned in 1913).

With Akashi joining the fleet, it's mentioned that the fairies (actually seen talking) are put in charge of repairing the riggings while the kanmusu takes the bath. Akashi repair damage with physical therapy (massages and stuff) followed by bed rest. Ruined clothes are just replaced. (chap. 41)

Requiring more hands on the job due to a major operation coming up (the Summer 2014 event), the admiral approved of having the destroyers in training officially join the others during sorties. Which led to provisional(?) launch ceremonies for the newbies, involving making postcards to give to the admiral and other people (people outside the base being strictly off-limits), a graduation-like roll call, mochi throwing, rope cutting and bottle breaking (ch. 52-53).

Maya and Nachi had qualms about fighting Northern Princess (the enemy loli). Ryuujou managed to convince her to let them pass unhindered after giving some of her paper thingies (ch. 54).

As the fleet prepared for operation MI, Akagi prepared herself mentally several days in advance. It mostly involved Kaga doing Subliminal messages. (ch. 55)

As the day of the operation approached, Oyodo actively participated in the fleet's activities. Although still on support only. (ch. 55)

People did notice the semblance between the abyssal bosses and Akagi and Kaga. Instead of angsting over the implications, Kaga was more interested in what kind of benefit could come from such transformation (ch. 56).

Turns out that the Abyssal counter-offensive occurred because Northern Princess figured out she had been tricked by Ryuujou. After some negotiations conducted by the destroyers, reparations involved lots of sweets and ramune (ch. 56).

Trivia:

  • According to Ise, the admiral will start randomly poking whoever was assigned as his/her secretary.
  • Yamato have an air conditioning effect on inside the "ring" of her rigging.
  • In that particular base, Kanmusu waiting for orders to sortie are not supposed to take off their riggings. After a certain incident during winter, the usage of Kotatsus became forbidden within the base due to that.
  • Kaga have very high body temperature, at all times. Akagi and others noted that sharing a kotatsu with her is extremely uncomfortable. Altough standing next to her can be very comfortable otherwise.
  • Oboro's rigging is full of crabs. No, seriously.
  • Apparently, it was the admiral for this base that assigned the swimsuits for the submarines. They were supposed to use a normal uniform above it but I-8 and I-19 took the admiral's comment that they could go without said uniform if it hindered them swimming as giving permission to go around wearing only school misugi all the time. The admiral also provided similar swimsuits for the destroyers' swim training (ch. 50).
  • That thing Maruyu carries around that's supposed to be a transport tube? Something she found on the sea floor and took for herself.
  • Kinda sorta confirmed in chapter 29 that the admiral is the only guy in the base.
  • Not all kanmusu have seen the admiral in person.
  • According to Tatsuta, Tenryu and Kiso sometimes bring stray animals to the base. It should be noted that pets are allowed in the base, as revealed when Bismarck got a cat (ch. 49).
  • Kongou is quite adept at trolling. She just should avoid doing it with Nagato.
  • Carriers eat bauxite even mixed with their food. It's too hard for Destroyers, however.
  • The Destroyers have a poll going about what Fusou is going to use as hair decoration next.
  • Furutaka can't use her eye flashlight for more than a few minutes without needing to refuel.
  • Yayoi admit that she is bad at displaying emotions. Her actually angry face is quite scary, if the reaction of the other destroyers is anything to go by.
  • Shoukaku and Zuikaku's room have cushions (the kind you use to keep children from getting hurt) in all the furniture to keep the former from getting too hurt when she stumble on them.
  • Houshou share a room with Ryuujou
  • Houshou, for all her mother-like presence, does not like to be seen as or compared to a grandmother.
  • Tenryuu keeps her side of the room very tidy. Tatsuta too, but goes out of her way to make people think she collect cute things (going as far a borrowing some to show during inspections),
  • If someone is going to make tea, plan to make tea or think of making tea inside the base, Kongou WILL know, no exceptions. It apparently have to do with a black tea sonar. Nagato have a similar thing with Ramune.
  • Hiei's negative aptitude with food extend to scones as well.
  • Claims of being just like everybody else aside, Yamato and Musashi's meals are usually very high class.
  • When the topic of age comes up, date of launch is the first thing used as reference. It gets awkward really fast when the likes of Kongou are considered.
  • Remodeling seems to be a really quick process that can be done with minimal fuss, in a single day. Even physical changes in the girl's body (Yuudachi's eye color, Ayanami's hair, etc) could go unnoticed for a while.
  • Akashi do, in fact, run the item shop while being part of the fleet. No duplicates here.
  • Some enemies are shown floating a few feet off the water, while others do not, for some reason.
  • Not even Tauhou herself know whatever the surface of the deck of the warship was covered in a coat of latex or was just wood painted black.
  • Riggings do heat up if when exposed to the sun for too long, it become a problem during summer. On the other hand, Yamato get a lot of hugs because of it, so it kind of even out (ch. 50).
  • Many of the destroyers developed fear of getting submerged in water, even for swimming (ch.50).
  • Many of the ships caught up in the Fourth Fleet incident of 1934-1935 (Hatsuyuki, Amatsukaze, Kikuzuki, Mikazuki, Mutsuki, etc) have nightmares whenever there is a typhoon. Nightmares seen to be a pretty common way for the kanmusu to remember things that happened to the actual warships.
  • For all that the fandom regard Shiranui as a stoic badass, she was terrified of participating on the Summer event.
  • 4-koma Kaga is pretty protective of her "girls" (planes).(ch.54)
  • Ryuujou, apparently, can summon small flames with her onmyouji stuff. (ch. 54)
  • The Admiral, in a somewhat twisted attempt of showing respect, sent some sweet bean jelly to be delivered to Midway Princess. Apparently he tough she was the one calling the shots in the Abyssal Fleet and was quite shocked when Yamato corrected him (ch. 56).
  • Some of the kanmusu believe that a rice diet help remodel faster (ch. 56).
  • After trying to feed the girls returning from sortie with only rice and canned beef. Akigumo was removed from cooking/resupplying duty, forever (ch. 56).
  • Apparently, the abyssal fleet can send telegrams to people on land (or maybe just the naval base). Hoppo's really serious about her hobby. (ch. 56)
  • Isokaze confirm that the mismatched socks are her way of imitating Yamato. (ch. 57)
  • The thing with her "luck" apparently left Yukikaze with a closet case of survivor guilt. (ch. 57)

Shimakaze:

The deep sea fleet, somehow, managed to take over the seas, isolating countries all around the world. Their objectives and actual numbers are unknown, as well as what exactly they are.

It's mentioned/confirmed that the Kanmusu do, in fact, have the same amount of fire power as the battleships they are named after.

Shimakaze and Asashio were sent to deliver some materials to a base of the air force, but they were showing carrying nothing but their normal riggings (plus rensouhou-chan) en route. That may or may not mean they have Hammer-space as a ability.

Shimkaze herself overheated her turbine (she was obviously in pain, and there was steam coming out from her back), once, and almost blew up by running around like that during a practice battle. Also, her top speed is 40.9 knots (her crashing on a rock while going at that speed is probably the first durability feat we see).

Apparently, Kanmusu can do boarding actions against each other if they make physical contact.

The first reference to the scrapping game mechanic is made here, with Aosaki (the commanding officer) threatening to scrap Asashio and Shimakaze if they kept causing trouble.

As of chap 7 we are shown that Takao can tank shots from destroyers without even her clothes being damaged. And hear that Yuudachi sunk one enemy Cruiser, one Destroyer and five others (in comparison, Asashio and Shimakaze struggled and almost got sunk by a single enemy Destroyer).

All training exercises in that base (Maizuru) are conducted using live ammo.

What appear to be a Re-class wiped out a whole base (In Kanoya, it seems). Chapters later, there's still people freaking out about it (having to fight her may be related).

At least in here, Re-class is a recent addition to the ranks of the Abyssal Fleet. That can sneak on land with the navy none the wiser, and behind kanmusu in the middle of patrol, it seems.

Also, Re-class is the most human-looking abyssal ship seem up to this point. How does that even work?

Things are quite a mess higher in the chain of command of the japanese war effort. Vice-admiral Aosaki have a very low of opinion of her higher ups.

Re-Class took Asashio to some cave near by, or under, the sea in a isolated island. She showed no hostility, thinking that Asashio was angry with (that is, point her gun at) her because she was walking around with her jacket open (Asashio having advised her against that in their first encounter). She still got angry when Asashio slapped her, tough (ch. 13).

There was no one else on the Island.

The fleet was taken completely by surprise by the fact that Re-Class can launch planes as well. She quickly shot down Kaga's aircraft and kept most the heavy hitters rooted in place while Shimakaze and Yuudachi went ahead, with the former going to rescue Asashio while the latter distracted Re-Class. Poi managed to see through Re-Class's disappearing trick but was still completely outmatched in combat (ch. 14).

Trivia:

  • Whitou Akagi around, Kaga is a very depressing individual to interact with regularly. Between the stoicism and anti-social attitude , she is pretty hard to apprach. And, apparently, she have complex about the events involved with the constriction of the actual warship.
  • Maruyu ended up in the Maizuro base when she was supposed to go to Kure. There's even a handy map explaining the sheer level of FAIL required to pull that off.
  • That tail-like-serpentine thing on Re-Class' back? Can bite through solid rock, casually.
  • The spacial chapter released along with chap. 13 have Nagato fighting Northern Princess (A.K.A the enemy loli), bringing said enemy back to the base, and keeping her... Only to let her go later. Hoppo still pays visits from time to time along with her older sister, tough. Also, Harbour Princess can apparently go from very tall to 4 stories tall at will.

Itsuka Shizuka:

Tenryuu do, in fact, go into melee with that sword hers during sorties (prologue).

The thing with Fubuki and Akagi in the anime was foreshadowed all the way back in chap. 1, in the colored pages

Turns out that the all parts of the riggings (more like every single piece of equipment) the Kanmusu carry around are crewed by fairies like the ones in charge of the compass. Confirmed in later chapters it's not just Carriers.

We see an normal oil tanker being attacked by the abyssal fleet in chap. 2.

Tone's catapult malfunction and is jury-rigged by the fairies to allow launch a recon plane, all mid battle.

This one, as of chap five, show us the biggest battle yet in the printed media.

We are also shown that the Yuubari and Akashi are left in charge of weapons' development/R&D.

During a mission, I-19 hit her leg on the seafloor and became unable to move. The recently remodeled Chiyoda then had to conduct a rescue operation.

Tomarigi-no-chinjufu:

Here it's mentioned that the main trouble caused by the Abyssal fleet is disruption of trade routes.

The "rumor" that the enemies are manifestation of old grudges is mentioned again.

"Shipgirls are young women who carry the souls of ships, hence the term "shipgirl". This hasn't been officially revealed by the navy, though. The effect of that "soul" is different on each individual. Sometimes the ship's memory will cross through the girl's mind, and they will have seemingly different personalities. One could say that the impression left on the shipgirl greatly influences her" Suzuya's introspection.

In chapter 2 we get to see how the supply area actually looks like.

Nanodesu!

According to Inazuma, the Abyssal Fleet have taken complete control of the seas.

Inazuma and Ikazuchi, the only two members of the Countermeasure Committee, are in charge of fighting any abyssal vessel that get close to the base. The other destroyers are still being trained.

Excessive collateral damage is punished with hours cleaning the local beach.

Inazuma and Ikazuchi made it an habit of overwhelming their enemies in combat, forcing them to flee instead of sinking them. It's a secret they kept from the other destroyers but apparently the teitoku is aware, having a big round zero noted down on where he/she keep count of how many enemies the two have sank.

Riggings are summoned in a magical girls-like transformation¹.

When enemy destroyer shoot, whatever is being shot appear from thin air already in motion, also they float around two feet above water. This is unlike what was shown in the Shimakaze manga and the anime, in which they shoot from their mouths and are stay partly submerged most of the time.

From what I could see from the raws of the first volume, battles are much more intense² and battle demage does go beyond torn clothing³.

¹In Inazuma and Ikazuchi's cases, with a cry of "Setting sail!", they put their hands on the ground and pull up, the chains of the anchors now in their hands. Apparitions of their namesakes sprout from the ground behind them and move forward as the riggings materialize in their backs.

²Between the city full of waterways and the enemies constantly sneaking in the battles are much more dynamic and frantic than anything else on printed media.

³Aside from maybe the Shimakaze manga this is the only time any of the kanmusu are shown bleeding from battle wounds. One of the enemy vessels kept on fighting after half her body was blown away.

Other Stuff: It may not be immediately obvious, but Musashi actually do load her guns manually with all those shells she carries around . It's only in the image made for a magazine cover that we see her doing it, tough.

Something that I haven't seen much anywhere else is that the player actually hear the fairies talking during the introduction phase of the game.

Talking about the game, anyone who bother seeing the translations of the missions' flavor text will probably notice that each stage is a situation that would happen only once in a linear list of events instead of being an area with enemies that is visited several times over. The compass is probably a representation of how the girls and the admiral have to make decisions on the fly of how to proceed while knowing very littler about the enemies' position, intentions and movements.

So, there's a tabletop rpg floating around, three books already out with one translated unofficially. Going by game mechanics, a kanmusu getting one-shoted by enemies is very possible, but so is having an ally keeping her from sinking and dragging her all the way back to the base for repairs. Also, enemy design can get pretty out there from time to time, what with the random event table having someone seeing or getting blindsided by an enemy that looks like a shape or object written down by the players.

Some Weird plot bunnies that wouldn't leave me alone:

  • The back and forth conversation between a navy officer and a researcher that was involved with the whole shipgirl thing near the start of the war. The snippet is supposed to be an omake to a Quest on SV.

Recording delivered along with the report on the current situation of the R&D division. Contain relevant, if limited, information about the technologies currently in use against the Abyssal Fleet.

"It's basically magic."

"What"

"With how little we actually understand about it, we might as well say it's magic"

...

"Jokes aside. They way all of this works takes most of what we know about physics and throws it out the window.

Let's see... Ah, I got it. As you might know, the "Ship Girls" are made based on specific warships, displaying characteristics of the ones they are named after, including firepower and durability."

"Yes, proceed."

"It more or less come down to how the original ship, as it existed and fought, left some form of... Mark? No, more like an echo that kept repeating itself endlessly up to this day. That "echo" is something that we can't perceive without specialized equipment. What you need to know is that it is possible to have an object take the characteristics of what caused that "echo" by making it replicate the "sound". Thus we have something a little bigger than a handgun causing the same kind of damage as an artillery piece.

We didn't really expect to end up creating a new life-form that eat steel and drink gasoline, tough, for several reasons. Chief among them being we had no idea of what we were doing when we started. We are figuring it out as we go."

...

"Anything else?"

"Oh, right..."<sound of rustling paper> "What can me tell about the... Little people that appeared along with them?"

"Oh, you mean the fairies? They are part of the crew."

"The crew?"

"Yeah, can't have ship without a crew. In most seen cases what would be the command staff and engine crew become the individual, while the those who would be manning weapons and the like turn out as fairies. In some weird cases, tough, the equipment itself develop it's own consciousness and self awareness."

...

"Anything else?"

"No that will be all. Thank you."

  • Assuming there are multiple of the same girl running around, the story of how one of the unlucky spares went about her daily life trying to figure out why she rarely (if ever) was sent out on sorties/expeditions, why many people around seemed to avoid or try to ignore her and why she was living alone in an otherwise empty section of the base, only to bump on her doppelganger by luck one day. I think it would end with either the girl working past the awkwardness of the situation and become a legitimate part of the fleet or being transferred to some other base after making sure there were no hard feelings between those involved. I think this would work best with either Tenryuu or Haruna, but for MAXIMUM DRAMAS it would have to be Kongou or Yamato.

  • Someone get a good look at the installation type abyssals and decides to try and see if it's possible to get something similar working on their side. Three weeks later the new girl is assigned to a base somewhere on the American front. Only to be transferred again two months after that when the base started doing so well that they deemed her abilities best used somewhere else, same as the next base she was assigned to, and the next one after that, even to other countries. That's how Pearl Harbor eventually found herself working on a Japanese base.
    • Her actual contribution to the war effort is more on the logistics of the whole thing than in combat¹. Like Akashi, she can repair ship girls and work on the gear on her own, unlike Akashi she's not restricted to repairing only minor damage. She repairs them mostly by wrapping them in bandages, giving them some bitter medicine (to the eternal consternation of the destroyers) and have them rest. The kids who behave get candy.

¹since she's not a ship, she can't move on water like the ship girls, which mean she only see action when the base get attacked once in a blue moon.

If anyone's interested there's the Greatest Generation on Sufficient Velocity, it's about a US intelligence officer whose been sent to Yokosuka naval base to find the origins of the abyssal threat. The USN has been all but wiped out, an there are British, German, French, and Italian ship girls, while the US has none because they are rebuilding. The intelligence officer is most likely one of the few girls the US has been able to call, the Yorktown class Enterprise CV-6

It was a strange, surreal, and possibly morbid moment.

That was what Panglima felt and thought as she looked at the relics of decommissioned vessels at Changi Naval Museum. Deck guns from Kallang and Bedok II, old missile systems that had been replaced, and the most jarring of all, her old 40mm turreted gun and part of her hull, all of it on display and well-maintained. Somehow it felt a bit like seeing a part of her own body stripped down and hung up for the world to see, and she shivered a little at the thought and how morbid it was.

As the proud and heroic spirit of RSS PANGLIMA made human, she didn't really know how to fully take in the magnitude of the museum and the years she had missed. Admittedly the officers and N Smen of the modern Republic of Singapore Navy were very kind and understanding to her situation, even if the circumstances that led to her manifestation were a complete fluke, but she was still lost in this brave new world of the twenty-first century.

Having read the recent histories and read up about herself, Panglima was already familiar with her death and rebirth, and had no objections with the naval school's main block bearing her name. The big rub was that as she was, she had barely any weaponry in her wooden rigging, and her armor was almost as non-existent. The Abyssal threat was putting steady pressure on Singapore's waters, and only the brave efforts of the combined arms of the Airforce and Navy held them back, thanks to the extensive training and relatively bulky defense budget. Nevertheless, she wanted to help. It was why she'd awoken unbidden, after all.

Panglima's inexplicable awakening, as she had come unbidden by any summons, was a massive surprise to the international community, as the Japanese and some of the Europeans had only got their shipgirls to step forth after summoning them. Singapore was able to get a surprising amount of support for their new shipgirl, if only because everyone was interested in how she had managed to wake up on her own without her Navy expending a significant amount of material on a summoning ritual.

Looking around the museum, Panglima could almost feel the slumbering presence of two of her sisters, also survivors of the Second World War. Bedok, her fellow patrol craft/training vessel, and Singapura, who was once Wakataka of the IJN. She could also feel the presence of her modern sisters outside, the six Stealth Frigates undergoing maintainence and resupply before their next operation. THEY would not be awakening as shipgirls yet, not for a long time at least. Her two generational sisters, on the other hand, felt close at hand, as though they were just waiting for someone to call for them.

Reaching out to her hull and gun, Panglima experimentally ran her hand down the side of her own hull, and felt an electrical sensation as her fingertips brushed the barrel of her gun. Her NSF escorts/babysitters watched and whispered excitedly as the turret began moving ever so gradually, flakes of paint coming off the joint where the turret was swivelling. They quietly cursed the fact that they had left their camera phones in the Red Zone locker room back in their office.

The shigirl closed her eyes and felt the sensation of 'reconnecting' with her original gun, her fingers flexing slightly and her mouth open in a slight gasp as the turret continued to move under her willpower. At this point one of the NSF had vanished, probably having run to fetch one of the officers who was in charge of her welfare.

As Panglima concentrated on this sensation, her original hull began shifting slightly in its display mounting as well, the fresh paint peeling as some of the vessel's components responded to her willpower. This was what she wanted and needed, Panglima thought to herself, no wonder she felt like something had been missing!

The turret and hull stopped moving as Panglima relaxed and turned, opening her eyes to see a gathering crowd of goggle-eyed Navy personnel and museum visitors, who had noticed her presence. Some of them were taking pictures.

"Perfect," she said to the crowd with a smile, "I'd like to make use of my hull and gun once more."

I wrote a thing from the deeps of my imagination.

A repost from the Warships KC Thread Kai, in which I take the limited characters and usual fandom exaggerations seriously.

The Admiral's Lament

You want to know what it's really about? Fine.

Everyone thinks the girls are "cute" and wants to be a commander. They babble about all the distinct personalities like that. Well, yes, some of them are pretty cute, which makes sending them out...difficult. Others...some of them are flat lazy, some have room in their minds for but a single issue; usually another of their kind, but not always. Not in a love-cherish-protect way, but usually in a kind of creepy stalker way. A surprising number are insufferable pricks. One or two do fixate in a less creepy way, but that's usually on you instead of someone else. Not "you" in a personal sense, though. You in the sense of the person in your office. I used to find Kongo a breath of fresh air, until I found out she treated my temporary replacement while I took sick leave exactly the same way she treated me.

The girls are weird, I'm saying. And not in a "different" way. In a "not entirely fit for the rest of society" way. There's a few of them I think could make it in normal life, of course. Lord knows there are so many that's inevitable. But for the vast majority, you get the feeling you're dealing with something...not entirely human. Their relatively nonchalant reactions to combat and injuries tend to reinforce that, as does their documented immunity to combat stress as we understand the term. The girls get tired. They get burned out on things, but because they've done them so much. I've been commanding for almost two years now and I have at least forty girls that have been with me for most of that time; I've never seen any of the signs of combat stress from them. Commanders will crack before their girls will, every time. We care about them in a way they don't seem to care about themselves, and in a way only a few of them seem to care about each other.

Hoshou, Tenryuu...a few others, they seem to get it. It's easier to stay sane when you can talk to someone. Musashi at least listens to me and doesn't judge, though I'm not sure she actually understands why I'm bothered. I have to resist the urge to dropkick Akebono every time I see her. I suspect I'm not the only one here since some of them consider her behavior far too disrespectful. I have to resist the urge to dropkick Kongo too, but that's because I know she's in love with the uniform...or something. Like I said, her statements about the Admiral's heart don't seem to change when the Admiral does. Even if the Admiral's sex changes. Go figure. Sometimes I wonder if she can actually tell people apart...

This has gone long. I'm rambling. I've barely scratched the surface. It's all screwed up. You don't really want to be an Admiral, kids, to wake up and deal with all this madness, all day. Everything looks normal. Everything is all wrong, warped, subtle madness in every breath you take.

You say that like it's not worth doing, or for that matter like the shipgirls aren't uniquely warped in their own way, considering that their relationships with the Admiral are very different from the handler-cyborg relationships in Gunslinger Girl.

I feel that as long as shipgirls get to socialize with more people than just their admiral, they'll be closer to humans in behavior.

So, how do you guys imagine the time frame of sorties and expeditions to be? I currently have two interpretations.

The first is that the day night cycle is actually as shown. Which mean that long sorties can go on for over a weak (and that shipgirls can go on for that long without support). Seeing as a short sortie that last from 5 to 20 minutes depending how much  the internet connection collaborates, the short expeditions available at the start of the game last a few days at most, while longer expeditions taking from weeks to months and the longer ones can take whole years.

Going along with this one would imply that Shipgirls and Abyssals battle by shooting each other for hours on end until nightfall, when surviving Abyssals simply leg it.

My other, less certain interpretation is that the night/day cycle in the game isn't about the time at which the battles take place, but the range. In the anime we are shown that when a lot of Abyssals hang around a place for too long, the sky darkens completely in the general are and clears if they are defeated or fended off. We are also show that shipgirls can engage from beyond visual range, as shown from Kongou's timely rescue in episode 3. In this case, night time would be when shipgirls engage at close range (as in, knife fighting range). It's still hard to divine how long expeditions last, since the didn't mention those and the girls rarely got in more than one battle per day in the anime, beyond the fact they probably aren't as long as on my first interpretation.

@ Night: This has the potential to become either hilarious, or heavy drama. I would so very much read more, hoping that it'll be both, like those Charlie Chaplin masterpieces.

Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.
