No. ... okay I mean sure, we haven't had a Disney movie based on a ride in a long time ... but it's in the jungle, and we have enough Hollywood jungle movies anyway.

The Jungle Cruise movie better be a stealth comedy or else it's missing the entire point.

Yeah, it will be a cheesy action-adventure comedy. Or they could go with the George of the Jungle movie approach.

I also understand it that the movie will also help jumpstart renovations for the Jungle Cruise Ride.

Its languished in rot for a long time and one of the new heads of Disney Parks started out at the Jungle Cruise as a skipper, rode it first thing after he got the job, and was apalled at the condition the ride was in.

That may be because of the incident involving an alligator eating a child alive on one of the Florida resorts, causing all reference of alligators to be erased from Disney parks, and causing some people to avoid reminders.

Out of curiosity, which Jungle Cruise was it and what did he find wrong with the ride? I was just on the Disney World one a few weeks ago and it seemed fine to me.

Source is a friend who works at the parks and started as a Jungle Cruise skipper himself. A WDW Jungle Cruise Skipper. The ride is... ok. The anamatronics are not was well kept as they should be and maintinence on the ride isn't given when its needed leading to the ride to often have parts that just aren't working all the time.

Its honestly a ride that's been around since opening day and sorely needs an update. I don't think its ever really gotten a major refurbishment in all those years. A couple updates here and there but nothing major in the same way some of the other rides have gotten. Haunted Mansion and Pirates get updates every decade or so. I don't think Jungle Cruise ever did.

The refurbishment was announced back in April 2017 and the production of the movie will be involved in the refurbishment of the ride. https://www.cinemablend.com/news/1653200/the-rocks-jungle-cruise-involvement-will-go-beyond-the-movie

Is the water making it challenging to update it at all?

Only some anamatronics are in the water (the hippos and some elephants), plus there's nothing stopping Disney from draining the river.

I think the lack of a referb comes from the ride being low priority. I've only seen the line wait exceed 20 minutes like once, and that was on a pretty busy day.

Oh, I totally understand why its been a low priority. But I would say that its been put on the backburner for so long that whatever renovations that NEED to be done, they'll probably be extensive. If they don't want to be updating it frequently, I'd say you'd probably need to gut a lot of the ride by now. Not out of any malace, but that the tech used is back from the 70s and probably not particuarly reliable after so many years and even more so if you want to get new anamatronics, effects, lighting, sound, and etc in there.

I think Haunted Mansion is due for a similar extensive referb any year now. Hatbox proved that they could do some really cool shit if they had the opportunity, but now he looks so more advanced than anything else around him that I feel everything looks so much older. I believe Disney probably will do something about that if Del Toro's Haunted Mansion ever gets off the ground.

Many of the Mansion's effects still hold up pretty well, honestly. Like I'd only replace a couple of the ballroom animatronics so they're electronic instead of pneumatic for smoother movement (the duelists) and touch up some of the graveyard stuff.

Oh, the effects hold up entirely. I just do think that, with Hatbox coming back and being so much more impressive than anything else, doing a referb with that level of technology in mind might be honestly really cool if they can keep to the heart of the attraction. And considering the Haunted Mansion's unbelievable popularity, I'd say any renevations to that extent would be profitable and certainly get some publicity.

What's the Paris version like? I know the lore is different, but the effects should still be in the same vein of the original with more modern upgrades.

Paris version is a lot different. Namely there's an actual story to it. I'd say the biggest change is that the mansion is more tied to Big Thunder Mountain (named Thunder Mesa)'s story rather than being on its own. The ride's end, instead of just a graveyard, has outright zombies and more gruesome situations depicted.

I'd say tech wise its a bit better than the original, but not by too much. Some anamatronics like the titular Phantom are rather impressive but its more of the same. It was only built in the very early 90s and, even then, Disneyland Paris was built on a rather tight budget. I believe the ride is currently under a year long renovation right now from January of 18 to January of 19.

Things like projections and real-time CGI have become a lot more perfected in the last few years. We also now have anamatronics that can have more precise movements and articulation than way back in the 70s. Quite simply, a re-done Haunted Manion with that level of technology could be easily one of the most impressive feats of theme park technology ever built. Ghosts interacting with the guests and rooms changing size and dimensions before the eyes of the guests.

Like, everyone remember the Hitchiking Ghosts scene at the end of the ride? What might the next logical step be if we include real time projections and CGI into the mix?

If anyone wants to see what can be done with CGI and projections, do look up Hong Kong Disneyland's Mystic Mannor which has a rather extensive use of CGI elements and projections to literally bring things to life.

Even if we agree that the ride is a classic and is fine where it is now, I'd argue that it's going to evenually lose its luster very quickly with the age of rides like Galaxy's Edge's attractions and that it might be better to set Haunted Mansion ahead of the curve here rather than wait for those renovations to be desperately needed.

Maybe they want to make Hattie something exclusive to Disneyland.

Its probably more cost than anything. Hatbox is an expensive anamatronic. The parks aren't as well funded as you might think and I worry that that'll only get worse in the coming years. Comparativly, Red-Head was replaced in both versions of Pirates of the Caribbean and probably because she's less articulate and, if you believe online theorists, she's also scavenged from a few retired anamatronics.

Its also possible that Disneyland was a proof of concept before they plan out more extensive updates (i.e. Pre-Del Toro updates?). Hatbox would have been a good opportunity since its something A LOT of people have wanted to return and a no one will be upset if he's not exactly like he used to be. No 'They Changed It Now It Sucks'. Win-win.
