Welp the series is over.

Since Reina is too busy chasing after the impossible, Asuka stealth steals the Kumiko's heart. In the end, it was a very pretty end, the direction of having it be about Kumiko's feeling towards Asuka as someone she admires and cares about was pretty nice even if I'm still a bit bothered that they went with such a safe, open ended finale. Teasing and scraps everywhere feels a bit cowardly.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

Isn't a new film coming out? I recently heard of it.

One more chance for Kumiko/Shuichi to be anime canon...

It really looks like they're pushing Shuichi/Kumiko after all.

...is Euphonium profitable?? It seems like Kyoani's milking this franchise for all its worth.

[up] Maybe? It's several films, with at least one being released internationally. It must be making something.

Then again, Tamako Market got a film somehow.

And apparently Liz and the Blue Bird is a spin-off of Euphonium.

[up] That was the movie I was referring to. I heard it did decently well, but I have no hard figures.

The Kumiko/Shuichi is strong with this film. Does Japan like them together?

It’s canon with the novels actually. The whole Reina thing was largely anime only, she is a massive Reina/Taki shipper more than anything.

In the Light Novels most of the drama at the end of S1 should have been about a failed confession by Shuichi and they should be going out near the end of S2.

The Anime chopped out nearly every scene they were supposed to be together so I suppose the movie is a fixfic to finally include those scenes.

Doesn't that make the anime a bad adaptation?

[up](x3) Most fans assumed the anime intentionally wrote out the Kumiko/Shuichi plot. Now they're adding it back in all of a sudden.

Adding it back in risks the two being Strangled by the Red String... Actually, no, they're certainly going to be strangled, no doubt.

[up] From what I've seen, people like the anime over the books. Their relationship in the books was bland. All I hear is people complaining about the two hooking up in the books.

I don't know about Japan's opinion on the two, though.

I shouldn't have made that a question.

It really doesn't matter if their relationship in the book is bland or not.

Or if people don't like it.

Technically speaking, the lack of that stuff in the anime...would make it a bad adaptation.

[up] Your premise is faulty. Following the source material exactly does not automatically make something a good adaptation and deviating from that source material does not automatically make something a bad adaptation.

Counter-example, Sailor Moon Crystal followed the manga a lot more closely than the original anime and it was generally agreed, at least for the first two arcs, to be detrimental to the show's success because because at the very least if failed to properly accommodate the change in medium

The stuff mentioned seemed important enough.

I'm no purist, I don't care about the changes.

I just brought it up because reasons.

That example doesn't seem relevant to what I was saying either. Being faithful isn't the same as following the exact same details beat for beat.

[up] From what I've heard, their relationship isn't that important or well-done in the book. It's more tacked on than anything. No Romantic Resolution would have been the better option than a subpar Childhood Friend Romance.

You can...improve on that in an adaptation.

That's the point.

If it's not important, then that's fine.

Anyone else able to catch the film?

For some reason some of the characters in the new film have different English dub actors than their ones in Liz and the Blue Bird, I guess because it had a different casting director and companies behind them.

Might as well effort post.

I didn't watch the second season after the first one ended, not because I disliked the show, but just didn't muster up the time to catch up while it was seasonal. There was a quick video recap of both seasons that focuses on the main plot points so that was nice to have. Second season seems like it's more emotional drama from what I can tell.

The movie's sound, cinematography, and backgrounds are top notch, so props to Kyo Ani. One small thing I liked is how the V As act the kids with little touches in how they express themselves.

Plot wise, this is the remaining second year for Kumiko's grade? So they're trying to go back to Nationals and you get a new crew coming in that thankfully doesn't feel like a waste of time. What I touches me about the show and this movie is that kind of youthful aspiration and being from a music background, hits close to home with the struggle.

The movie itself I feel was a great encapsulation of what Euphonium does best and I ended up really happy and satisfied with it.

S3E2: It’s not Hibike Euphonium if Kumiko isn’t sighing in exasperation. Mayu Kuroe is the new euphonium player and she seems to be hiding some fangs under her niceties, much like Kanade. Poor Kumiko.

Since I was asked this in the seasonal thread, I still think Kumiko’s and Reina’s interactions are romantically charged. But it does seem the story is pushing Kumiko towards Tsukamoto.

S3E3: It’s an old refrain, the friction that results from a a competitive club going as hard as it can to win Nationals. I’m proud of Kumiko for managing to comfort Sally and ease her worries about club.

I have to say, I do not understand the point of having Kuroe around. She kind of just chimes in to add drama, flashing her Stepford smile all the way.
