Does the original poem/legend have a central villain of any sorts ?

Nope. Doesn’t even clarify who Mulan’s side is fighting.

IIRC the original poem was like

Conscript notice comes, Mulan goes in her father's stead, Mulan fights for 10 years doesn't get caught, goes home, People want to reward great soldier (Mulan), THEN discover he's a she.

[up] Actually, the last part was more like “Hey, old chum, I came to visit you! Wait, you were a girl all the time?” “Yes *stuff about rabbits*”

Oh, you have to click on the tweet to see the whole thread. Twitter is doing something weird where they show a bunch of replies and unrelated tweets first. It's annoying.

Well it's fairly lengthy but I'll copy paste it.

    Ng's thread
The Ballad of Mulan, a translation from my memory. Thread.

So, there are a bajillion translations out there already. I've been wondering how I'm going to contribute so I am wheeling out my one party trick of knowing the thing off by heart. I am translating this from my head.

It's an oral tradition, after all, so here it is as I memorized it over a decade ago. I cannot promise it is the most accurate translation but it is the one I carry with me everywhere, in my head. Ballad in "quotations" and I will provide notes/musings as I go.

"Clack-clack swish clack-clack

Mulan weaves by the window

The loom is silence but for the sighing of the daughter.

'What weighs down your thoughts, my daughter? What memories stay your hand?'"

"'Last night I saw the summons, the Khan is counting all his soldiers.

The summons fill ten & two rolls, every roll with my father's name.

My father has no elder sons, Mulan has no older brothers,

but willing am I to buy a horse at market & henceforth take my father's place.'"note

"From the eastern markets, a handsome horse.

From the western markets, a saddle.

From the southern markets, a bridle.

From the northern markets, a long whip.

At dawn I leave my father and my mother,

And sleep by the yellow river."note

"I cannot hear them call for their daughter,

Only the rushing of the yellow river.

At dawn I depart from the yellow river,

And sleep by black hills,

I cannot hear them call for their daughter,

Only the shouting of the mountain riders."note

"Ten thousand miles fly by, the mountains rush tumble onwards,

Sweat soaks into to her arming jacket,

Cold light shines upon her iron armour."note

"After a hundred battles, generals die

After a full ten years, strong soldier return

Return to see the lord of heaven,

The lord of heaven sits in a brilliant hall

The rewards fill ten and two rolls,

The gifts number hundreds upon thousands."note

"The Khan asks what I desire.

'Mulan does not need to be a secretary of the court,

Desires only to borrow the famed camel's thousand-mile stride

To bring his lost child home.'"note

My father and my mother hear of their daughter's return,

And go out to city to greet me.

My older sister hears of my return,

And clads herself in joyous red.

My little brother hears of my return,

And sharpens his knife against the pigs and goats."note

"The eastern door I fling open and sit upon the western bed,

I shed my warrior's clothes, and wear again the robes of long ago.

To the window I wind my hair into braids, to mirror I anoint my forehead with a petal."note

"I step out to meet my companions,

My companions are shocked and swoon,

Together we have fought for ten and two years

Not knowing Mulan was a woman."

"But the male rabbit thumps his leg when still,

The female rabbit has daintier eyes,

When the two run side by side,

Who can tell if I am male or female."note

That's pretty cool to hear! I was wondering how faithful it compared to the original, since the notes specify many places with artistic flourishes or transliteration attempts to maintain the original rhythm.

Was the release date always March 27th? I had it marked on my calendar as being the 13th but I can't seem to find any reference to that ever having been the case and they moved it.

I am also pissed they adapted out Shan Yu. They could have just made them explicitly Xiongnu in the movie. And again expanded more of Shan Yu's background.

Honestly asking, how likely is it that the CCP actually knows Shang is interpreted as bisexual by the fan base?

Well, it matters less if China is even aware of it and more of what Disney thinks China would feel about it. If Disney views it as much of a possibility, than it doesn't matter what China ACTUALLY thinks about Bi!Shang.

Is Mulan the only character that they plan to keep for this?

Pretty much.

I don't mind multiple takes on legends and other old stories- I'm someone who equally loves Disney's Cinderella and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella- but it feels very strange seeing Disney creating something so different from the Disney version. I understand why, I just find myself doing a double-take when I watch the trailer; I'm like "wait, Disney's making this?", and that's what's making me question where the other characters are.

Yup

At some point in future they'll probably do remake of the Disney film with the side characters I imagine

For now you've got an unrelated Mulan film

As a general rule Disney remakes are critic proof. They are mocked openly but make a ton of money. I really don’t see Mulan being the exception, lack of Shing, a romantic scene that didn’t fit the aesthetic of the Chinese public according to one Twitter post, or musical numbers otherwise.

Uh hasn't a pandemic shut down china's box office. I don't think this will be quite the slam dunk disney expected of for completely unexpected reasons.

It's not even as it critics have been particularly harsh either. Even the most stringent criticisms have acknowledged the films as at worst pretty generic but competently made, but frankly unnecessary from an artistic perspective. It's just that Disney as a studio don't really give much of a shit about artistic value when there's money to be made.

And without China it won't be nearly as much if the film is being delayed indefinitely. I would think Marvel reconsiders that Shang Chi film now.

At least shang chi will be released later but making a film specifically for one international audience can lead to huge issues if real life stuff comes in the way that blocks that audience.

The scary part is we don't know when the outbreak slows down. Hell it might even get worse, so by then Disney would have bigger issues than a MCU flop.

I wouldn't call that critic-proof, then.

More along the lines of bankrupt-proof, broke-proof, or bomb-proof.
