There’s a really, really obvious factor in the casting though. Disney is clearly viewing this movie as a redo of the animated movie in China. Not just a retelling, but a straight-up redo, because the animated version bombed.
Having the lead be played by a popular Chinese actress who is specifically popular in China, means they have a leg up in China, they can avoid some of the complaints (a big chunk of the cast will probably be Asian Americans because there can’t be that many Chinese (like, primarily acting in Chinese cinema) actors who are fluent enough in English that they can act convincingly and who are available for the movie, so they can avoid the issue of not using that pool) and if they do the smart thing and get an entirely Asian cast (except maybe for Mushu, because I’d give them a little leeway for voice acting there) the praise they’d get for that would outdo the fear of not having a “bankable” white star. Especially since that’s turning out to be less and less of a thing nowadays.
Not Three Laws compliant. They need to get Murphy back for Mushu. That's all I want.

The animated version bombed?
Where there's life, there's hope.In China.
WHAT? This is outrageous? Everyone knows Asians don't exist in Hollywood! I demand a recast to the much more sensible choice of Jennifer Lawrence with Shia Le Boeuf as Shang and Paul Giamatti as Shan Yu!
Seriously though, smart move by Disney. And I hear she's even released a few albums so if this is a musical, we know she can sing.
But were any of those albums in English? Talking in English is one thing. Singing might be another kettle of fish entirely.
Kevin Hart would be a good Mushu. Right size.
How about Peter Dinklage though

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.I'm pretty sure it's meant to invoke the Göktürk Khaganate, centuries before the Mongols. They did mainly use Kazakh/Kyrgyz stuntmen to portray the nomads.

Mileena MadnessKinda ironic. This film was specifically made for the chinese audience but they won't be able to see it due a completely unexpected disaster.
