Supposedly, it's more like Legend of Zelda. In ten years they'll release an official statement about how the timelines meet.

Consider Hunie Pop in Hunie World Prime, and Hunie Cam in Hunie World Sigma... or something like that.

@ Chariot: the new art is a placeholder due to being a tech demo. There's even a straw poll asking about it, and most of the votes are wanting the anime style back.

Hmm, I wonder the if the more serious story that was scrapped for the final game had elements used for the profiles of Hunie Cam. Because Audrey's sure sounds like it.

Also, Nikki was actually a lesbian according to her Huniecam profile.

Nikki being a lesbian was shown in the announcement video at about 1:18. Here's a link.

It's funny they'd go back to the serious consequences for the sequel, given why they ditched it in the first place. Or maybe they'll turn Audrey into a Chew Toy. Not funny now, but it could be funny later in a dead baby joke way.

I dunno if they meant to play things more serious so much as going for Crosses the Line Twice. I also think that from the artstyle to Audrey's whole thing that they're straight-up trolling the audience.

I stumbled on some Let's Plays of this game while searching for entirely different things (honest!) and ... wow. The tittilation factor is only present for a short while and then the fundamental absurdity of the game takes over. Are all H-themed VNs just a collection of fetishes? I was hoping to find something a bit more ... well, mature, if I ever decided to play one, such as a life simulation that happens to also include realistic sex.

It's really more of a send-up of eroge rather than a straight example, plus there isn't really a lot of interaction. I always thought that it worked better as comedy than as smut.

[up][up]Well, Huniepop is not a VN, for one thing. But the important thing is that it varies from game to game. Yeah, a collection of fetishes is a common clichés, but usually, the popular VN are not solely about that.

Key Visual Arts is famous for being focused on the plot and the characters, with one of the most popular of their games, Clannad not having sexual content at all. Fate Stay Night had H scenes in its original release, but it become so popular it got adaptations, sequels and spin-offs, most of which with no erotic content at all.

You'd think someone would have found a good middle ground where you can have the sex and still have believable characters and an interesting story.

[up]They have. Quite often, actually. Too bad none of them worked on this game.

That's really really hard. Fate/Stay Night is one of Japan's best selling VN ever, but the sex scenes are infamously terrible to the point of Narm (or Narm Charm if you found it funny). Even series that treat sex with some degree of maturity can fall flat for any number of reasons.

For what it's worth I don't think any of my top V Ns have much in the way of sexual content. If you're interested in some that do I can recommend ones that I didn't find 100% awful, but I'd have to do it through PM.

[up][up][up]Maybe I worked my post wrong? Because, yeah, that was what I was talking about. Key/Visual Arts is famous for that. Another popular example is Katawa Shoujo. There are Eroges and Eroges.

[up]Why would it have to be through PM? Do we have some rule against recommending games with erotic content? If going off-topic is the problem, then maybe just moving to some more appropriate thread. like here, would be best? I am kinda curious about what you would recomend, myself.

The sex is generally rather poorly written, though. Often, it feels like the writers just didn't care about that part.

Like in Shuffle, where they basically wrote only two sex scenes, and copy-pasted them over all the different routes.

You'd almost think these people don't want to write porn.

[up][up]Kind of a rule of thumb. If a site doesn't allow adult content you probably shouldn't be linking to it (and yes I'm aware of the irony given what topic we're in). Moreover, some of the titles I'd recommend had wiki entries that were purged years ago and the last thing I want to do is provoke a moderator response.

[up]You're righter than I think you know. The hentai industry functions as a gateway to mainstream attention the way the indie movie scene can for directors. Again, look at the Fate franchise. The prototype's characters were largely different from the final versions. Saber was his proper gender for starters, and the lead character was female, and while I'm pretty sure there was hentai involved it was even more incidental. In the decade since Fate came out Type-Moon's gone even more mainstream with the series, to the point that the sex stuff comes as a surprise to most new fans. Says to me that it was there in the first place just to get attention for itself, and as soon as the attention was there it was kicked aside.

[up]I wasn't expecting you to give links. Titles and company names usually is all that is needed.

Also, you know Fighteer is a moderator, right? You will get a "moderator response" regardless. tongue

Oh, well in that case:

  • Eushully's Kamidori Alchemy Master,
  • August's Aiyoku no Eustia,
  • Utawarerumono by Aquaplus,
  • Yume Miru Kusuri by ruf,
  • Eien no Aselia by Nippon Ichi and Cyberfront.

Above all of those I'd probably put YU-NO The Girl Who Shouts Love At the End of the World by Elf for being way higher concept .

EDIT: Oh sure but there's "getting a response from a moderator" and "reminding the mods of a years old content crackdown that still gets people cranky". I'll tilt away from the latter. I hope.

When it comes to Type-Moon stuff I actually heard that Nasu didn't even want to include sex scenes at all at first, but was pressured to by his publisher to encourage sales.

Let's be honest here: Whether because Nasu was still a new writer or just bad translations (or both), Fate's dialogue could be pretty narmy in general. Recall all the times Shiro notices that his classmates are girls. Other than that, the sex scenes weren't any worse than any other VN. At least they were mostly plot-relevant.

But yes, Huniepop is a) not a visual novel, and b) a porn parody anyway. For good or ill, it really isn't indicative or sex in video games in general.

I'm not going to get all mod-mode and crack down on a conversation that (a) is appropriate to the topic that it's in, (b) I started. Don't worry.

Anyway, it is somewhat interesting how the entertainment industry views explicit sexual content: it seems to be intentionally shoehorned away from "mainstream" content, not just in terms of ratings and distribution channels and whatnot, but in terms of quality of writing.

The assumption seems to be that if you want porn, you want mindless, misogynistic, exploitative crap; and if you want anything resembling quality writing, it has to be Bleached Underpants.

It is interesting how that industry is one where both one can make a fortune that may rival that of a Hollywood star, and yet also one associated with shoddy motel room production and a sleazy atmosphere.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

Now in anime form!

So i just learn Ryan, the developer of Huniepop and Huniecam will be taking a break due to personal issues affecting his mental health (stress and a lack of sleep). So for the time being, the development of a new puzzle game he's making and Huniepop 2 will be on halt.

I wish him the best and get well soon.
